Surpassing the original - metalheadz (and non-metalheadz) should check out the Swedish band Hellsongs for their covers of classic rock/metal songs.
Highlights are Orgasmatron, Paranoid, Seasons in the Abyss,
and Run to the Hills.
On a metal theme Xentrix's cover of Ghostbusters is awesome.
Billie Jean by The Civil Wars
and any cover done by Johnny Cash on his American Recordings
Stand by Me by Pennywise as well. |

"The first time I saw your face Is better by Jonny Cash than Roberta Flak. I think walk this way is better with Run DMC as well"
Disagree with Walk This Way - Aerosmith's original is still better |

All along the watchtower by Hendrix... in fact there are a few Dylan tunes which have been improved via cover.
Also Aretha Franklin does a banging version of Eleanor Rigby which for me is better than the Beatles. Admittedly I'm not the biggest Beatles fan... |

I absolutely agree - Dylan is a fantastic songwriter but his vocal style is not really to my taste which often results in covers of his work sounding more pleasing to my ears |

"Bruce Hornsby & The Range's version of Jack Straw was way better than the original Grateful Dead version in my opinion.
Has anybody heard both? It's a bit obscure for the UK. "
No but I'll have to listen now, that's just the way it is |

I wouldn't say better, because I like the originals in most cases, but certainly as good as..
One Step Beyond - Madness
It Must Be Love - Madness
Try A Little Tenderness - The Commitments
Heatwave - The Jam
Tears Of A Clown - The Beat
Can't Get Used To Losing You - The Beat
The Tide Is High - Blondie
Denis - Blondie
Roll With It - The Bluebeaters
Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps - The Simmertones
Something Else - Sex Pistols
That's Entertainment - Morrissey
Dizzy - Vic Reeves & The Wonderstuff |

Wild is the Wind by David Bowie is a tribute to the Nina Simone version which is in turn a cover of the original by Johnny Mathis.
Tower of Song by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, much better than the Leonard Cohen original. |

Ooh I've not heard the Johnny cash version of that... I'll go away and learn something.
Sticking with Johnny cash, his version of Hurt is better than 9 inch nails version |

"Hurt" by Jonny Cash had been already mentioned
I also suggest "With a little help from my friends" by Joe Cocker (original Beatles)
"Venus" by Bananarama (Shocking Blue)
and Aerosmith's "Walk this Way" in the Rockgrass interpretation of Hayseed Dixie and "Hound Dog" by a relatively unknown singer called Elvis Presley

I love the Watson Twins' version of Just Like Heaven, I prefer it to the Cure's original.
https://youtu.be/-EmvAV9PYTA
The Specials version of Pressure Drop is amazing. I like Toots and the Maytals but prefer the Specials.
https://youtu.be/rE2jctig4HI
Against All Odds by the Postal Service is beautiful:
https://youtu.be/oevdCrECyek
Regina Spektor's version of Real Love is also just gorgeous:

Love the afore mentioned Hurt by Johnny Cash, and Hendrix’s all along the watchtower
I’d like to add The Fall’s version of Lost in Music, Sonic Youths version of Superstar, and Badly Drawn Boy’s version of Thunder Road ?? |

Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe |
Walk Off The Earth's cover of Hey Ya is excellent, and so is the video.
Their cover of Somebody That I Used To Know has 5 of them all playing one guitar at the same time and even Gotye is a fan of that cover. |

Always on my mind by the Pet Shop Boys. To all intents & purposes their own tune it's such a rework. Even better in the full extended version called "In my house" which shows the true genius of the guys.

"Some would argue that Nothing compares to you by Sinead O'conner is better than the original by prince " I came to post this! I think the original was by The Family. Was a soul/funk/jazz song though.

Another of the covers done by The Stereophonics. Suits KJ's voice amazingly. It's on YouTube and definitely worth a listen. |
