..... do you have a tendency to jump in to a situation or debate without much knowledge or understanding of the subject? Does truth and knowledge even matter to you or are you better served by your gut instinct or tribal loyalties....?
Have a ponder on it and let me know what you think this afternoon, preferably after some thought. Challenge my brain plz it's melting this week....
Have a great day everyone. I'm off to see some seals with my girl. If anyone from fab is there, no need to say hi or anything ok, just enjoy the seals....
Intended as a simple thread, no sarcastic undertones, keep it pleasant and be nice to each other if you can.... If not then just send vag pics or tributes and fab my pics....
Much love

I realise how much bullshit people talk when they’re talking about a subject I know a lot about, so if there’s a subject I know little about, I tend to not get involved, or read up on it, cause a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. More people should do the same, listen to the experts and the scientists and don’t let Your ego get in the way, it’s okay to change your mind on a topic, it’s not a form of weakness. The problem today is everyone gets entrenched in their side of the argument and they don’t listen to what other people are saying, it’s become so polarised and that gets us nowhere. |

That's actually very well put. I agree, tribalism can be so unproductive.... |

Generally if i know fuck all about something i keep well and truly quiet. But if it's something i know in depth I'll happily pipe up and argue if needed.
Don't presume to know a lot though |

I like facts from everyone, not just those presenting a debate.
I've seen how twisted and skewed information can be according to whom may be presenting....God ive become cynical and jaded !
But remember...facts always don't provide answers....simply the questions to ask in my experience.
Did any of that make sense? |

Knowledge matters. Understanding of a subject is good. Trying to see all sides of an arguement.
Can jump in with opinion if you have less knowledge but should be open to people who have more knowledge correcting you and be open to learning more and, possibly, changing your opinion.
Being dogmatic and defending a position purely for tribal loyalties doesn't play for me (which usually explains why on the web discussions degenerate very fast). But then I've never been tribal or much of a team player.
IMO 'truth' is overrated and highly subjective (unless we're talking mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry et al (there will be exceptions) ). Everyone has their own truth and sees things differently. Even memories are not reliable.
Always be open to new ideas/viewpoints/arguements but don't take things as 'true' just because - todays ideas and theories will be tomorrows failed ideas and theories.
A good book dealing with some of this is Being Wrong by Kathryn Schulz - whatever you believe to be right/wrong/moral today will be wrong and out of date tomorrow. |

Another thought provoking question Nip, hope you got to see some seals.
But back to the question, I'm human that means I do both. I'm analytical so I want answers with facts and figures if it's something that can be measured in such a way. But you can't do this with emotions you can't measure ones emotions Vs another's, we all feel differently.
I do believe in gut instinct even though it's a fallible measurement. I in particular tend to go with gut instincts because of my past even though the logical part of me knows this isn't always the right course of action. Tribal loyalties I think can be harmful, who decides the rules you must adhere to? How do you question the leaders of the tribe? And as they are a tribe can outsiders question their rhetoric?
I do have a tendency to jump into debates regardless if I have an in-depth knowledge or not. But I always make sure I highlight when I'm debating based on my opinions (by using I think or I believe...) which are obviously biased and when I'm answering with fact and figures I will give my sources.
Is my own answer based on my own opinions of myself correct? What's your own style Nippy?

I had a girlfriend who studied physics at university. She said the first thing they told everyone was forget the physics you learnt at school because it was all wrong. And they started again.
Being more of a humanities man myself I tend to think there are no real wrong or right answers - just wether you can back them up or not.
In English Lit. there is no one way to interpret Shakespeare - you can say what you want as long as you can back up your assertions from the text.
Historical events are fixed(?maybe?) but the interpretation of those events changes over time. |

If it's a subject I know very little or nothing about, I may give my tuppence worth, but would state that I'm not knowledgeable on the matter, in the hope to learn something. If it's a subject or conversation I do know something about, I will state my opinion, with the view to engage in conversation, and again possibly learn something. I do at times go with my "gut instinct", but depends on subject matter. I would like to think that I have no tribal loyalty in the sense that I think you mean. Regardless of all the above, my opinion or mind can and has been changed on many things through conversation, and think this is important. It's not a bad thing to be better informed of a subject and then change outlook or train of thoughts, it's one of the many ways in which we grow as a person. |

Knowledge Vs assumption......
Knowledge can only go so far without direct experience. A lot of perceive Knowledge are actually intellect, objective understanding of a matter.
knowledge must be grounded in experience more than just knowing or hearsay. I could tell you how to drive and what not but if not ground in personal experience the knowledge/knowing is just the beginning.
A lot of people speak from the point of hearsay, which leads to an assumption.
Truth is subjective to the individual experience. War or historical context is a perfect example of the truth changes. Two people can be faced with the same situation and see different point. |

The question I don't think has a right or wrong answer. I do a bit of both I'd rather be more knowledge based but I don't always have time or ability to understand a subject fully, BUT I usually know when I don't know and I'm ALWAYS open to persuasion. I can be a bit anti-tribe at times and maybe that makes me overlook the occasional good a tribe might do, idk.... I'm fiercely independent at times and that's not always a good thing if you're trying to win friends and influence, coz ppl can just think you're an argumentative cock innit.... |

I love learning and am happy to ask the 'dumb' questions most people are too embarrassed to, and see people around me marginally sigh relief when stuff gets simplified! I pick stuff up quickly and can apply common sense to most conversations.

The question I don't think has a right or wrong answer. I do a bit of both I'd rather be more knowledge based but I don't always have time or ability to understand a subject fully, BUT I usually know when I don't know and I'm ALWAYS open to persuasion. I can be a bit anti-tribe at times and maybe that makes me overlook the occasional good a tribe might do, idk.... I'm fiercely independent at times and that's not always a good thing if you're trying to win friends and influence, coz ppl can just think you're an argumentative cock innit....
You arguementative? No never!!!

"Another thought provoking question Nip, hope you got to see some seals.
Yes but with interest as to what you do but not as someone that thinks I know or understand it.

You're both thoroughly decent human beings for one and I genuinely love you both and I'm glad to have you around. Both very chilled, undemanding and always there for a laugh. Xnip do you want to share some kinky entertainment in here or you coming back to the other thread you was poking in to release some energy...
Let me know either way because people are waiting for us to get the party started. Don't be a spoil sport now that I know how much fun you like to have or we can go into that chicken thread if you don't bail out because that looks like the sort of fun you used to enjoy back in the day.
What say you!?
