The SAS Iranian Embassy Seige

Did you know that it was 50 years ago today that a group of Iranians stoned their Embassy in Kensington and took hostages before The SAS stormed the building and rescued all but one of them. All the Iranians were killed apart from one who was imprisoned and now believe it or not lives in Peckham. |

I was fortunate enough to meet general sir Peter de la billiere who at that time I'm I'm was in charge of the SAS operation.
The flight plans of all aircraft landing at Heathrow were diverted over the building to disguise the drilling of holes from the adjoining buildings to place microphones so conversations could be heard.
I remember watching it live on TV. Not many countries could pull off an operation with such panache. |

. I was a 12 year old boy watching the late great Alex Hurricane Higgins v Cliff Thorburn then the BBC interrupting the great man in midflow with a news flash and showing the SAS storming the embassy.

There were some who didnt want them going in.
They dealt with the terrorists in the only way bang bang your dead.

I read the book about the siege, several years after watching it happen.
It mentions some IRA terrorists surrendered themselves, as they switched on the radio to hear that the SAS had surrounded the building. |

I remember. I remember the police officer on the door, Trevor Locke, was armed, but the terrorists didn't bother to search him because they 'knew' British police were unarmed. 
When the SAS moved in, he wrestled one of the terrorists to the ground and was still struggling with him when a SAS guy burst in, said "Get out of the fucking way Trev" and shot the terrorist dead. |
