What you are seeing in the flash backs is I think is the final assault on Negans stronghold.
I strongly advise NOT to read about it there's spoilers

I thought it was a little slow and wondered why it was so easy to take out Neegan's group. But looks like that was the end game and we'll spend the next 9 episodes finding out how we got to episode 1. |

I was expecting more of a build up in typical twd style, not that I like drawn out t.v
But it went straight into action because of the backlash from last season from the fans.
So tried to make up for it in my opinion. |
