Welsh rugby selection
Jump to: Newest in thread
A new rule brought in by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) means any player taking up a new contract with a team outside Wales must have won 60 caps to be able to play for their country.
And Rhys Webb with 26 caps and just signing for Toulon will no longer be available for selection....
Is this a good thing for Welsh rugby?
Is it better to keep talent at home or allow players to develop abroad and in an international environment? |

They go abroad for the money
No life isn't all about money
But we all want the best for our kids and we have to treat ourselves
I work over the bridge simply because that's where the money is
I wouldn't take half the wage to work on my doorstep
surely the same applies to rugby players - they are human too |

We'll see (should be interesting) gatland said things like this before, wasnt it something like...if your not playing club rugby in wales you won't get picked for wales. Gatland is just flapping his gums again and letting off some hot air! |

Totally unfair
How many caps has Rhys missed out on due to serious injury playing for his country??
Welsh rugby is cutting off it's nose to spite it's face.
Wales cannot keep up with the coin being chucked about in England and France so we will eventually end up with a 2nd or 3rd string international team at the next world cup if they enforce the rule. Bunch of moronic twats |

"The solution is staring them in the face. You only get paid for playing for Wales if you play your club rugby here. "
But by doing so you're restricting your talent from developing elsewhere.
Why should it have to be in Wales?
Is have thought that there would be European laws that would prevent closed shop practices like this and preventing players from having the freedom to play where they like.
Something similar to Bosman |

Why should they be bl*ckmailed into playing their club rugby ib Wales though???
As much as it agonises me to see boys I have watched play rugby week in week out since they were youngsters like Biggar and Webb fucking off to play in the Aviva and Top 14 I don't blame them one little bit. The Pro 14 is a shambles, the Ospreys are a shambles and Welsh Rugby is the biggest joke of the lot.
They will be playing rugby at a higher standard and getting paid far better for it.
It's a panic reaction from the WRU and at the end of the day as per fucking usual it is the lifelong, loyal, paying fans that will suffer |

Surely the experience and exposure gained in the bigger teams will have a positive effect on our national team.

This
They will be playing for better teams with better players against better teams with better players. It can only have a positive impact on their game. The WRU are fools. |

This...we are already short on selection of top players, I appreciate it happens or has happened with the England squad, but why wouldn't you want your fellow countrymen to earn what as much as they can, I think if this rule comes in they should make sure that all Welsh rugby sides can only employ Welsh players..exactly like they would do that...who the fuck comes up with these ideas? |

Gatland doesn't have the power to make this type of call, this is board level shit. He would be a fool to himself....and he is certainly no fool, I think the last lions tour proved that. |

Agreed he has done wonders with us and the lions team but sadly due to predictible tactics which other teams have twiged onto, maybe his time is up and time for a change.
Back on track... surely going to England or France improves a players game as the Celtic league is way behind the others. But cutting it short the rule is bollacks and it will be reversed I guarantee it |

I can't believe a guy who is going to be with us for what looks like a short period of time will have that kind of say, fingers crossed it will be reversed or God help us at the next completion...i think they will struggle to field a team nevermind a decent one |

It's not Gatland's law/idea.
Not paying Wales players who play abroad isn't illegal as the national team isn't contractual, it's an invite team.
Nor would my policy restrict players. Webb for example would be free to play for whoever he wanted and still play for Wales. He'd have a choice, unlike now. All choices have consequences. |

Can we end this fallacy that going abroad improves a player.
Other than Stephen Jones way back when I can't think of one. They get flogged playing in England and France.
North, Charteris, Lydiate, Brad Davies, Jon Fox etc all were worse whilst abroad. |

Perhaps they are just playing in better company rather than big fish in a small pond
The farce of the WRU means that the whole setup, club and coaching infrastructure is inferior to many of the "abroad" teams |

I don't recognise what you describe in your first paragraph sorry. If anything it should be easier to shine in a better team as you're not constantly on the back foot.
The club and infrastructure is inferior in Wales, yes. I don't blame any player for leaving Wales. But they have to accept the consequences in terms of player welfare, WRU access and (hopefully one day) WRU match fees. It's up to the player then to decide what he does.
I'd also like to see the WRU pay the regions adequately for developing these players and then wages might be better and less players want to leave. One day... |

To be fair these players don't earn anything from playing for Wales other than pride..good luck to the WRU it won't last long when they find that they can only field have a team..or a really shit team that no one will want to see as they end up playing crap and losing and in the end the WRU lose out as they don't sell any tickets!! As I say if this is the case why allow players from around the world in local teams surely they should lead by example and only allow Welsh players in Welsh sides therefore producing more Welsh players!!...can you imagine Wales football team telling Gareth bale he can't play for us because he has now decided to play for the greatest team in the world with the greatest players ultimately achieving his best potential as a player!! How spiteful and short sited of the WRU good luck to them

You've been miss-informed. Welsh players currently get about £12k per game for Wales. That's near enough £100k a year if they play all games. Now if Webb can make £200k a year more at Toulon than in Wales then it makes financial sense for him to go. If the difference is about £100k then withholding payments for international appearances makes sense.
You can't insist Welsh regional teams are only staffed by Welsh players. That's illegal as the players are contracted.
You're right about this 'law' being stupid. The Welsh team will suffer. |

nope it doesn't actually. I am talking about picking a Welsh Team, not a Lions Team. When Webb got injured before the 2015 World Cup everyone (including me) was all woe is me. Gareth Davies came in and smashed it, scoring tries for fun. He is a try machine and keeps opposition back rows far more on their toes than Webb does. Earlier this month Davies completely outplayed Webb when The Scarlets beat The Ospreys and scored 2 tries ! |

The only time they are directly comparable, with all other factors being equal, Webb gets picked by Wales selectors.
I wouldn't use the world cup as any benchmark. We were utterly shit and lost to any decent team we played.
Using head to heads isn't a good benchmark either as it doesn't take into account how good the rest of the Scarlets are and how shit the Ospreys are at the moment. Hell, Gareth Edwards would struggle at the Ospreys at the moment. |

Gareth's Davies is not better than Rhys Webb.
Everybody seems to get excited about him because of the breaks he makes, but that's only a small part of the game for a modern scrum half. His as-round game is weaker.
