Will the squad about the fly out to New Zealand and 5 days to go til the first game I am almost busting with excitement.

So thought I'd start a thread for all things Lions related over the coming weeks.

Any calls on the starting test XV??

I know many think we are going to get whitewashed but I have money on us to take the series 2-1 (I know I am ever the optimist)

Humour me my Fab friends

We have to have faith in the boys.

It's definitely going to be a close fought test series and a massive itinerary building up to them too. I have no doubts there will be injuries and certain players "targeted" but if the squad can stand up to the challenge they have a big chance.

What do you think to an all Welsh back row Dave now that Billy V is out??

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

Personally I think they are playing too many mid week games and this will have a knock on effect on the test team. Fingers crossed we win one game.

Cj stander will probably be No. 6 with Warburton 7 and Faletau at 8 imo.

Fortunately the back row is really strong so whoever they pick should be up for the job.

The fact he's made Sam captain would suggest he's cemented his test spot. Yet I feel that Tipuric has been the far better player this year. Toby should be the automatic choice at 8. And a lot will depend on which side he plays Sam. If he plays him blindside then Tippers has a massive shout.

We'll need luck with injuries and people need to be in form if we stand any chance of beating the All Blacks.

Every position in the 23 will be key and everyone needs to be on top of their game.

I didn't think he had a bad game at all

Just there were a few parts where his lack of pace stood out

Sexton looked totally out of his depth against a semi pro barbarian side

As long as Dan doesn't spend the whole tour waving his arms and shouting at the ref he could be in for a spot on the bench for the first test. Gatland sees Farrel as a 10.

Poor performance again and I fear the worst performance ever for the lions in this tournament. No guts, no leaders, nobody tuff enough! Missing likes of o'connel, Front row played ok today but is poor. Owens had a good game but I think it's time gatland swallowed his pride and brought richard hibbard back. What happend with Wales has absolutely nothing to do with the lions. Animals are needed out there against those guys not pussys ducking tackles, kicks to nowhere and fearful tactics. Biggar-poor shouldn't be out there, liam williams should have seen two reds, sexton-he's finished send him home!!

The first three matches will be used to focus the attention on a squad capable of competing in the tests. Several players are doing their best to play themselves out of the reckoning but there have been several good performances. Itoje was good today, Faletau excellent on Saturday and good contributions from others..

Give it time.....

I don't think so

The 1st test is no time to be trying someone who played poorly in the easiest game

Unless he has a stormer against the Crusaders but I can't see it

Hogg for me is overrated and it showed last Saturday

I just hope Sexton can find form as it's been quite sad watching him become so poor of late

There are 12 Welshmen on tour and only 10 games. Which 2 unlucky Welshmen won't get a chance to captain the Lions?

All talking like it's all over!!??? These are just warm up games! It's all about who clicks up until then. My initial worry was that there would be to many games and they would suffer to many injuries, but I was impressed in the last 2 games (ok a few silly mistakes in the last one) but it's enormous pressure on them and tbf they haven't had that much game time. Who knows how they will do, bit let's not write them off just yet, who knows it could all be a strategy.

Yeah tbf it's not like he's had much success and knows what he's doing!

Let's just wait and see innit! I sympathise with you Scots, I think there are a few he could have taken....but...that's the side he chose and as head coach he will succeed or fail by it.

Let's just get behind them they are there representing us as our elite, what hope do they have if we are not behind them.

Johny and Richie Gray should have gone. Russel should have defiantly been selected instead of out of form bigger (who shouldn't even be out there). And I mean SQUAD before I get a new was ripped lol. Scotland had a good 6 nations and on form these players should have been selected but... gatland will continue to pick his out of form aging favourite boys.

So do I.

Russell has huge talent, but blows hot and cold, tends to go AWOL at key moments and his defence is ropey as anything.

I'm not someone who loves everything about Gatland, but it's crazy how many people don't see why he favours players like Biggar and Halfpenny. It's because they can understand and implement a defensive system and are brave, committed tacklers.

Same with Hogg really - a sad loss and I'd have loved to see him there for his attacking skills. Falls off too many tackles though.

The coaching team know that anyone who is suspect defensively will get slaughtered against the ABs.

People just see the glitzy attacking stuff really when they watch rugby. On a tour with limited time, a coach is always going to get the defensive side right first. That's why the better defenders are favoured.

Hogg is fantastic attacking, but his tackling is dodgy. Halfpenny is solid and has excellent defensive positional sense. Russell is flaky!
