My advice would be invite only, but take friends of friends into account. Give yourself plenty of time to get the invites out and bear in mind that you will get no-shows, so have a reserve list. Also you will upset some people by not inviting them, but if that happens, ask yourself if they are the sort of people you want at yours anyway.
We have held many successful parties and will in the future be holding more.
