Cardiff Half Marathon

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Less than 7 weeks to go! Who else is running the Cardiff Half Marathon on 4 October? I've only been training for a couple of months but managed a slow 10 mile run yesterday so I'm very chuffed with that.

I've run the Cardiff Half once before but my knees are sore today. Any tips from more experienced runners or athletes are very welcome. Maybe a fab pint and steak after the run if there are quite a few of us doing it? x

I've got the Chester metric marathon about the same time, so can't make the Cardiff

You've managed to run 16km (I break it into km as they're shorter than miles, mentally )

So that's less than 5km to go

Which is not very much further.

Try and up your long runs by 1km at a time now.

And mix up your shorter runs with interval work - sprints, walks and jogs

Remember your rest days, and try swimming as a break from running to rest your joints.

You're nearly there, so keep at it and injury free. And don't forget to taper

BTW what's your target time ?

I am doing the Cheltenham Half the week before. Did a 16k run yesterday, but off-road and a bit hilly.

It's only an extra parkrun on top to make it to the Half marathon distance

Hi PR

I will be running it. Make sure you use some Vaseline inside your bra if it's cold to stop chaffing.....seriously sore nipples are a crippler.

See you there

Thanks chaps!! Oooh maybe this post is a good way of finding the hot bods on here hehehe.

Dock of the Bay - top tips ta. Just had to google tapering. I didn't know about that. I have put in a guesstimated time of 2 hours 15 mins but I'd love to do it in less than 2 hours. I ran 2 hours 22 mins a couple of years ago so anything under that would be cool. Did 10 miles in just under 2 hours at the weekend so I don't think under 13.5 miles is achievable for me in less than 2 really. Not enough time to train.

I'm not going to ask as I'm sure everyone who has posted on here can run them in 1.45.

Re the Vaseline - ha! Don't even go there. I have sports bra rub already but between my boobs. Sooooo not the look I want on fab

Anyone else doing it? Xx

Just think of the tortoise

Slow and steady

Know your pace min/mile.

Find a pace maker and keep with them

Even though your training and have targets, listen to your body! you don't want an injury before the race. Don't be worried about having a rest day. Just enjoy it though.

Go to the home page of the event.

There's an evening seminar and training run on Weds 9th September.

They do a lot of these for the Chester half and they're always good

Get used to running in numbers and alongside others of similar ability

I did my longest run ever yesterday. 14.2 miles at 11.4 mins per mile. Hard work but it was lush and I'm really chuffed.

One lovely Fabber from North Wales has messaged me and is working at the half marathon so won't finish til late. I'm planning to say hi at the finish line though

I still fancy going for Guinness and steak after. All I've had so far is messages offering massages. You're all such a bunch of perverts (hahaha pot calling kettle).

DockoftheBay - good luck in your 10k lovely. I'll message you about tapering X

I'll be bring up the rear, my normal tactic is in race motivation. Usually follow a nice rear until I get bored and it is too hard to concentrate on and wait for the next bit of motivation to run past me.

Been doing a few runs prior but this time not too motivated with the training …….. maybe I should start finding a training partner.

2:30's would be a big plus at the rate I'm going.

How many songs have you got loaded?

I presume you're talking about the half marathon

Otherwise you'd be picked for the Wales squad

Good luck to everyone taking part

Gav will be doing this, despite not training for 6 weeks due to injury, just completed the Men's Health challenge today so hopefully he'll be OK next week despite needing another 6 weeks rest, he did 1.39 last time in Swansea half but doesn't expect to do under 2.10 in Cardiff

Sounds like he's taking it easy enough

I know how out of condition you can be after missing 6 weeks

Let's hope he doesn't aggravate his injury

Agree with your tactic of following a nice shapely derriere, works for me too, much easier to pass the time away watching it bounce and bobble in front of you as count down the miles

If you're knees are sore I would keep knee movement going on your rests, I normally keep folding my legs on rests, like bend your knees standing to your backside as much as possible, this will keep the joints warmed up and eventually rid of any achey joints you may have.. Has worked for me in the past.. Then the obvious.. A good warm up sesh before you take off.. If these don't work for you, a really good sports massage will rid of any crinks or cracks that need doing and prep your muscles all over.. I normally combine all of the above, so long as full circulation is in flow, the aches will wear off.. Anyone please feel free to correct me if any info is out of place.. As I said before though, combining all of the above works for myself a treat.. I do alot of long distance walking and cycling so find it really helps.. Even maybe try a long walk on rest days also? x

Sudocreme is a far better cream to apply.

Be careful of the "type" of running top you wear. Get one with as close a weave as possible, almost silky, to reduce friction.

Avoid karrimor etc. As they can chafe

Get a heart rate monitor

Slow and steady = consistent

Too fast and too long = burn out

"To build up your knee strength do cycling too. I'm on the cardiff half too. But I do alot of distance cycling and only run once a week "

Running only once a week isn't enough.

You're exercising a completely different muscle set with cycling.

Although good for stamina.

You need to get your legs used to the motoon and impact of running.

Ideally you should be running 1.5 -2 times your target distance ie 30-40 km for a half marathon

I don't know about this. A half marathon isn't that far is you're reasonably fit and if you just want to complete it and not aim for a particular time. You couldn't knock out a marathon without some serious training, but a half is ok.

Having fun and enjoying the day is the main thing I reckon xx

Well done to everyone to have got this far and ready for tomorrow,

if you're 1/2 virgins or seasoned runners

Just go for a little jog today, make sure everything's in working order.

Pack your race day kit tonight, not forgetting your safety pins and numbers.

Have a good night's sleep and it'll all be over in a couple of hours

Can someone explain to me why people run???

Are you running to something or running away from something. ...I've run to catch a bus rather than miss it...and I've run away from some nasty people...but why do people run for nothing?

Not sure why my reply deleted???

As I said. People run for the same reason as they do anything else... Because they enjoy it.

For me I enjoy the challenge. It's my ME time and my mental destressor.

The changes its made to my body are just a bonus.

Running is actually enjoyable, believe it or not

And it can be a very sociable past time too, just go and see how many go to a park run on a Saturday morning.

There's a huge camaraderie about it all.

I'm fit, healthy, mentally alert after a run, at peace when I am running

I think that you have to admit that long term it puts pressure on your heart and joints and in old age you would suffer for you vice

Quite the contrary. It strengthens your muscles, and bones and joints, and keeps my ticker in good shape too

You should see the number of older runners out and about, and I know one 75 year old who's faster than me and a standing heart rate of 52 bpm
