To be honest, amongst the fans who watch the game week in week out in the Pro12 etc, you be surprised how many of them would rather England win than Ireland.
It's different this year, because of the way the results work, but there's a vein of pretty strong anti-Irish sentiment around. It comes from the perceived systematic "cheating" by Irish sides like Munster, the rise of the choke tackle etc and the perceived favouritism shown to Irish sides by refs and the game's administrators (who are Dublin based).
I'm not saying any of it is right, but it definitely exists and it's more prevalent amongst those who know the game well. Everyone else thinks it's this huge Celtic love-in and, to be fair, if you were in Carfiff/Dublin on match day, you'd think that was the case.
There's little love lost between the Welsh and Irish sides too - remember Gatland stoking the fires and commenting on that one a few years back. |
