With a traumatic first experience of trying to set up telegram and multiple people in my contacts receiving notifications that I have joined telegram with an abbreviation of my fab name, being completely mortified I shut it down as quickly as I could!

Please can someone tell me how I keep it private and away from my contacts? Thanks in advance

Joking!

That's why we don't have any of them anymore, they always want to let your contacts know!

I think (don't quote me) that you can opt not to include your phone number. So I'd assume this method would not notify your contacts?!

Neath valley.

Go in to privacy and security. Make sure phone number and what other things you want to are turned off to share

Between Pontarddulias and Gorseinon

Had exactly the same experience. Added telegram and only have the one phone (my work phone), had fab name and some cheeky photos. Realised the next day it had added loads of people I know professionally - so awkward!

I just use my name now and more normal photos.

When you first set it up I'm sure it should ask you to create a name ?

Settings, Privacy, Security.

Telegram is like WhatsApp in this regards. WhatsApp does the same.

Restrict Telegram to access your contact and they won't know.

Like with WhatsApp.

I think a contact of mine was notified I joined. Before I updated the privacy settings

Luckily I hadn’t used a compromising user name or photo
