I'm off on my holidays and thought its time to treat myself to a new camera.
Anyone have any suggestions on a reasonable prices camera?
Gonna be going on Safari so high pixel count and zoom would be nice. (Then I can use camera to take naughty pics when I'm home ) |

Depends how much you want to pay,a bridge camera is always good, like a Fuji finepix, some have 24x zoom that is fixed on for about £90-£150,if you want something more expensive that has changable lens then for a decent one your lookin at 250 plus |

We've been using the Nikon d3100 and it's excellent but on holidays we use an Olympus tough because its waterproof and is great fun in the pool.
The Nikon is over a year old and you'll pick one up for around £380 now and the Olympus is around £145. Xxx |

Don't get to hung up in pixel size it's the quality of the sensor that's important , higher pixel counts are more important if your planning to print off large photos |

Be careful when talking about zoom as it's not the same as magnification. Generally a DSLR with a 300mm lens will out perform a bridge or compact camera. We have an Canon EOS 550D with a number of lenses inc a 75-300mm zoom. This combination will give you 9.6x magnification relative to what you see with the naked eye. Camera manufacturers quote zoom ratios, these aren't the same as magnification. |

Your spot on, a digital slr way out performs a bridge or compact camera. We used a Nikon d50 for years then changed it for the d3100. We use the standard 28-55mm lens and the 55-200mm lens on holidays. X |

we use the d3100 also great camera, you can get it with the two kit lenses 18-55mm and the 55-200. For anyone wanting to get into photography with a dslr its a great bit of kit but at a price. We also have the sigma 150-500 another good lens just looks like you carrying an exocet lol. I think you would be better off getting a bridge camera if its just a one off or even hire a camera, very addictive and expensive hobby otherwise |

"Don't get to hung up in pixel size it's the quality of the sensor that's important , higher pixel counts are more important if your planning to print off large photos " I was a pro photographer untill a few years agao digital sensors replaced film but its the lens that makes a picture. i paid £800 for my L series Canon lens. and £3,500 for a 300ml 2.8 so go for a digital slr and a quality lens . second hand top quality is better than standard kit lenses by far . especialy the plastic mount canon lenses.

Something to carry around then the Panasonic Lumix is a great choice, bear in mind though that the Canons are the only ones I know that can take self pix if you want to take nawty pix and you can be included, for that I use a canon ixux. For Pro types then you best get a canon with good lenses. |

I went for Nikon 810 something like that, can't check as I'm tucked up in bed and mosquito net is a bitch.
I'm back in the UK this time tomorrow. The night time pics are a bit crap but I will leave a link to the photo album so people can see.
Btw had an amazing time, visit orphanage, had tea and cake with a Maasai tribe, sunburnt and mozzie bitten but loved it |

Sounds as if the camera was the least important part of the trip. Glad to hear that you had a good time and hopefully the camera that you chose was able to deliver what you wanted. The experiences that you had will far exceed what could be captured in a photo! |

I've loved it, I've been staying with nuns or sharing room with sister so "alone time" hasn't happened since I left |
