Can't believe how quick the last 4 years has gone!!
Thought I'd kick the thread off early this year, ahead of the squad announcement this coming Thursday.
Really gutted George North is already ruled out with a ruptured ACL.
So any squad predictions? Bolters?
From most of the rugby groups I'm oon,the Scots and Irish are already claiming they'll be hard done by in the selection process

This is out there .. but in terms of bolters I'd like to see Hardy go at 9 unless he's still injured.
Would start a lot of Welsh in the test 15.
Ken, toby, tips, wyn, awj, bigger, fox, adams.
Exciting summer ahead whatever the selection.

I like that team tbf, I think that's close to what he'd pick right now. But I think adams is made for SA (loves the physical side) so i'd have him instead of lzr which kinda sounds crazy after 6N. I also think tipuric for watson and potentially experience of JD at 13. |

I think the exter 8 will Get a shout as something different but Toby will start tests |
Reply privately (closed, thread got too big) | |
Gutted for North as he was playing really well.
Not being bias but on form there can't be many English representing this year. Think they'll be a few more Scots in this squad as previous tours |

"I think the exter 8 will Get a shout as something different but Toby will start tests "
Everyones calling for Simmonds to go, especially with Billy V being totally out of form, I'd love to see him go
Marcus Smith is being chucked about as a possible bolter today aswell
I can see it mind, Bigger, Faz and Smith
Sexton is past it imo, too fragile now, and Russell is too erratic |

So Hardy may well be in with an outside shot |

I think Bigger is a good fit for SA. Happy to mix it physically with anybody, strong defensively and good tactically. He's had plenty of critics, but I think in Wales we won't realise how good he was until he finishes.

Definitely
Biggar is hugely underrated and under appreciated in Wales
No other international fly halves have come near him in recent years
People seem to have this obsession with having a flashy fly half these days, never mind if their defence is shit, goalkicking mediocre etc.
Like you say, when he retires only then people will appreciate what a quality player he is |

Quite true, besides the fact that they won the six nations and a certain team that plays in white were not on form and were below the other celtic nations |

Couple missing.
Couple who shouldn't go.
But selection must be a nightmare.
Good luck to those picked.

(Gatland obviously sees something I have missed in all the games I've watched him play)
Good to see Ali in the mix, even if it is only to add cover ... but watch out as he will be fighting for a test start or bench for sure..
Hamish Watson - no brainer (you know he was awarded Player of the 6 Nations 2021 )
Z Fagerson - great call and well deserved as he has played some brilliant rugby to earn a place in the squad - likewise with Sutherland
Russell - you only need to have watched him at Racing to know he is a very different player now to a year ago. Making much better decisions, able to zoom out and temprament more 'balanced' - he's my starting 10 for sure
van der Merwe - incredible strength - handy to have against the Bok
Hogg - good cover for No.10 (hahaha lol - I dont want to see a repeat of the Italy match when it became apparent very quickly he is not a natural No.10!!!)

I wondered where the rugby chat was…. Lol
I think there are some lucky… lucky boys on that plane…
I mean.. I love me bundee aki as much as any Irishman.. but there is no way he should go ahead of ringrose!
Also baffled by some of the 2nd row picks… I would have taken James Ryan and the younger gray over lawes and Johnny hill! Gatland basically telegraph that AWJ and Itoje are the test starters!
Honestly itoje and Ryan were my starters!
Jack Conan is another lucky boy to go…. |

I know it seems harsh but the omission of Ringrose and Ryan in particular may well have come down the crushing Leinster had off La Rochelle last weekend. Skelton made him look inferior. I am a huge Johnny Hill fan, didn't really show up for England but has been on fire for Chiefs. Conan seems to have come from nowhere really, never really done much for me but Gatland knows his business |

Sam Simmonds is a finger up to Eddie Jones I recon
Not good enough for the England team, yet picked for the lions
Looking at the team in more depth and listening to some of the pundits, it looks like he's going for a fast tempo set of forwards to give quick opportunities to the backs.
If that doesn't work, he's got a good bench to go into the attrition game. |

Apart from AWJ the pack is mostly the midweekers.
The scottish lads have proven they can play at high levels, scotland have had a very light oack for a while now and still hold their own in the front row against bigger and more aggresive props. Apart from Wyn Jones, they are the best scrummagers in the squad. |

You have to remember a lot of the English lads were not considered because the Saracens lads didn’t link up with the group till Monday after the championship playoff…. Or the others played at the weekend in the premiership semi, or are playing in the finals on Saturday …
So this team was always going to be basically pro14 players… |

Okay…now 2 questions….
1) who do you bring in as replacement… is it a straight choice of Gray or Ryan?
2) who now leads the tour… anyone think of a choice other than Itoje? |

Farrell or Ken
I don't think Gats will go for Itoje
As for 2nd row replacement, fuck knows
I'm not a fan of either you mentioned

Farrel or the sherrif will be captain.
Bit I don't know why they don't let biggs step up to the mark.
Disagree with previous comment about navidi as his stats during the six nations and other internationals speak for themselves. He missed out on selection due to numbers, nothing more. |

I’m pretty sure Gats and the coaching staff will have done their homework on the majority of home nations players and selected who they feel will enhance the group. It’s their selection to make.
All good for debate and discussion, but folk calling selections a disgrace and shocking is laughable. Although it is a chuckle to see the rise generated out the Irish especially their media. |

Most with those sorts of views are the sorts who only crawl out a few weeks a year for the 6 nations and base all their opinions on a few weeks of International rugby
They have probably never watched any of these guys play a minute of club rugby in their lives |

Just heard on BBC Wales radio that AWJ may be part of the tour after all.
His injury isn't as serious as first thaught and they are expecting his ability to recover is so good it will allow him to play some part in the tour at a later date. |

The South Africans will be ruthless and capitalise on any errors

Lots of negatives to take from last nights performance. Very slow, poor start, very poor kicking performance, and why did Daly and Farrell make the plane??
On a big positive note. They have showed their hand by playing an almost full test side. Lots for us to study and analyze, but also lots for us to improve on.
Im still confident we can do this, as long as the selection is right and we execute our game plan and chances. And not forgetting that Captain fantastic is back in town too. |

Wouldn't be surprised if Itoji and Beard start, both have great ability at stopping rolling maul from set play. AWJ with impact from bench for 1st test. I think Aki will be in centre, with who im not sure, Daly seems to be the blue eyed boy at the moment (not sure why?). Only thought on Sanjay starting at 15 is the fact he can cover the back 3 from the bench, hope he plays tho, if we had 15 men with his heart we would be unstoppable. Good luck to the 23 chosen. Im positive they will do us proud. |

"Liam williams on the bench a surprise..."
I don’t think it is… remember he literally has just come out of HIA protocol.. it’s probably wise to protect him and then start him in test 2 and 3…
It’s that back row that people are going to talk about.. I think Toby has been one of the best players on tour at 8… Lawes at 6 surprises me.. but I suppose it gives you a 3rd jumper… I would have gone with buryne at 6.. but bringing him off the bench gives you a dynamic boost |

Happy that Ali price is getting a chance because Conor Murray for me is way too slow around the ruck… josh adams can consider himself really unlikely to miss out.. you can see gatland had “need a big defender” on his mind, especially if you are going to have Elliott daly on his inside |

"DVDM is only real questionable selection... His defence is suspect but I suppose they want him to run over kolbe.

I love Duhan but he had been a bit defensively flakey in the past
No doubt this is no longer the case though |

"Strong looking team, Jones at loose head instead of Sutherland is my only questionable call. Hope there isn’t many scrums as he is by far the weakest scrummaging loose head there. Great in the loose though! ??"
No way
Wyn Jones is solid in the scrum |

I just realised my bench 21: should read Murray not Curry |

Think its a strange selection.
Not a lover of playing people out of position. Your selected for the Lions for being the best in the position you play surely??
Lets see what Saturday brings. Im still 100% behind those selected.
Good luck Lions. |

Not really impressed with the team he's picked but Gatland had always picked the right team for the right situation so il go with it and hope for a W |

Well I have watched him most of the season for Scarlets and Wales and have never seen a problem myself

I’d be surprised if we win the first test, Bokkes will be very fired up, we need to hit them with intensity but keep discipline.
Can’t wait though! |

Looking forward to the game. I think Lions by 3. First try I think will come off a line out and series of rucks. Wyn Jones sneaking over |

Think it will be a tight game the boks have so much power off the bench if we are to win need to get out to a good strong lead early. Fancy luke cowan dickie to score today |

"Disappointed with first half. Cant play behind the gain line against a rush defence. Need a more attacking fly half on now! "

Lions conditioning is way better than the boks… wasn’t pretty but they basically ran them off the pitch! |
