Britain's farmers estimate they will be needing 90,000 fruit and veg pickers for the crops soon to be ready. Workers from the EU can't get here.
Who would be willing to volunteer to help save all that food from going to waste? |

Who would be willing to volunteer to help save all that food from going to waste?"
Or should the government introduce a form of national service? |

There will probably still be a lot of restaurant workers, bar workers and self employed people not working at that time who would possibly be interested.
Maybe the govt could relax the furlough limitations to allow people to draw a (temporary) second income? |

Written about this on another thread.
It is a matter of redeployment. Around 5 million under / unemployed people available. Should not be an insoluble problem. Just need a "can do attitude"... Managed to attract 0.7) million to the Health service. Give people the opportunity... |

There would be logistical difficulties to overcome in terms of maintaining social distancing, on the farms, after work and getting to and from the farms but these obstacles have to be overcome. All that food can't be left to rot. |

Of course....nothing is simple right now but we NEED the food and it will give folk work. Seems a bit of a "win win" situation to me. Younger people appear to be less vulnerable to the risks of the virus so with proper precautions a working scheme should be capable of being devised.... |

Not necessarily. If you take strawberries for example, each person gets one poly tunnel to work.
Crops are in lines, so people could be spread out across the fields.
Disinfecting procedures are followed before and after any work. Farms could use much of the same equipment as they used during foot and mouth.
The only issue I see, is that of logistics, as laying on busses would risk too close contact.
Lastly, there may also be consumers unwilling to eat things like fruit that’s been hand picked. It’s all very well for things like carrots and apples that can be scrubbed for 20 seconds under a tap. Strawberries and raspberries are more fragile and therefore may not be as easily washed.
Question: how many people wash fruit and veg anyway? It does clearly say on the packaging to wash before eating but few do
