Today we are having to furlough 62 members of staff. It is a very difficult situation to be in but health and safety must be a priority at this time.
Is anyone else in the same situation? |

I've been on maternity leave for a year (for those who don't know it's 90% wage for first 6 weeks, £135 per week for the next 33 weeks (more now) and remaining 12 weeks unpaid). Furlough sounds much better, 80% of the wages is not bad. |

"Is it true that the minimum time you can be furloughed is 3 week ? "
Yes. You can then go back to work and be furloughed again if your employer is using a rotational system but it’s 3 weeks minimum in both cases |

I'm very glad that my son might have the option to be furloughed. I think it's a good thing to do for your staff, you are still taking their jobs seriously and keeping them employed.
Why do you think it's a bad thing to do to them? You are letting them stay safe and pay their bills at the same time. I think it's a good thing you have done. |

I think furlough is good for employees given the current situation. What I'm curious about is do you get anything as a business? Any financial support from the government to get through the hard time or is the possibility to furlough your staff is all you get? |

That is a difficult one. I've furloughed all my staff from 1st April (only have 4). So they will be on 80% of their wages and I'm on nothing!
I've sent my bank details to the local council for the small business grant that are available but there is a chance I may not qualify and it will take a couple of weeks to organise.
I've applied for the small business loan scheme but even there is no guarantee that I qualify, even though the PR says its for all business and that scheme isn't up and running yet anyway. Plus the money for business owners won't be available until at least June!
So the staff may survive financially but I might not. Therefore there won't be a business to come back to. I don't understand why no one has thought of that?

A HMRC representative told the CBI last week that under the updated rules given last Thursday that if you are a company director you can furlough yourself for your day to day role (your employment), yet continue as a company director (as employer).
Obviously, most company directors are on a low PAYE wage but pay themselves larger dividends so they would only be entitled to 80% of their lower wage.

I had somehow missed that, I'll take a look. Thanks.
