NHS Good Sam - volunteers.

Hi folks.
I heard today the government are looking for extra volunteers.
My son is having an operation tomorrow and - if that goes well - I’d like to volunteer.
However - I care for my mum who’s in the ‘get it and you’re a gonner, so stay at home!’ criteria.
My question is - to those of you already volunteering - do you come into close contact with the people you’re helping? As I really can’t risk passing this on to my mum - and would rather not pass it on to my kids either!

I’m pretty healthy and - as I worked in retail - currently jobless other than caring for the kids and mum. Happy to deliver medicines, groceries etc as long as there’s no physical contact involved. Xx |

I belong to an organisation for older people. Being the youngest in our group, I popped round today to those who live closeby who are on 12 week lockdown to ask if they need anything and gave them my number. Standing at the end of their drive I hasten to add  lots of different ways you can do your bit. Hope all goes well for your son OP x |

Ive applied and thought it was a 72 hour confirmation time. Ive applied for phone calls, delivering food and meds. They send you an attachment to familiarise yourself with. So with the delivery bit it's all done 2 metres away x |

These are the types of volunteering you can do for the NHS
”Community Response volunteer: This role involves collecting shopping, medication or other essential supplies for someone who is self-isolating, and delivering these supplies to their home.
Patient Transport volunteer: This role supports the NHS by providing transport to patients who are medically fit for discharge, and ensuring that they are settled safely back in to their home.
NHS Transport volunteer: This role involves transporting equipment, supplies and/or medication between NHS services and sites, it may also involve assisting pharmacies with medication delivery.
Check-in and Chat volunteer: This role provides short-term telephone support to individuals who are at risk of loneliness as a consequence of self-isolation.”
Choose one your comfortable with doing. Alternatively there are community based initiatives springing up that you can also help with.

I'm NHS and will be mobilising some registered volunteers - they will provide some valuable support to our most complex patients in the community. To reassure - safety first, not replacing services but to reach those isolated by all this and most of all appreciated by one and all. |

I've offered for everything and had my teenage daughter question if I'm putting them at risk. But I need to be out doing something x

I've signed up, think it's important to try to do something to help, once my daughter goes back to her mum's (who has been ill) then I'm going have a lot of time on my hands.

I agree. I’ve been told the same - that mum (who’s one of the 1.3million) and the kids come first. They do - but if no-one helps anyone out of fear for their own families - then what kind of a society are we anyway?

I applied the morning after it was launched (I fell asleep!) and I had my confirmation yesterday. I too had the email saying I wouldn't be needed until the 31st beforehand, I don't know if that has now been superseded? |

Ok so I got my email notification through to say all my checks had gone through and I'm good to go and also received an accompanying email with the starter pack documents etc.
Like an idiot I've managed to delete the email with the starter guidance (and yes it's gone from my trash as well!). For anyone that signed up... are these generic documents that everyone gets? And if so, would someone be able to forward me a copy of theirs as it'll probably take me days to get a response from NHS Volunteers via email or phone?
I don't know what to do to get myself up and running otherwise!  |

Looks like each activity has a specific Guide to starting.
The Community Response Volunteer guide is currently being updated - so its not available via the link.

Looks like each activity has a specific Guide to starting.
The Community Response Volunteer guide is currently being updated - so its not available via the link.

I've been logged on and "on duty" for a couple of days now but had nothing, mind you, I live in the middle of nowhere so maybe responders are chosen on the nearest first? Anyway my OH has said she is going to lock the doors if I go out on a call because she doesn't want me bringing the virus into the house (no-one in the household is in the "at risk" groups). I think it may be time for a trade-in! |

Odd thing though, when I press the "on duty" button I get a message saying that if you are registered under GoodSAM this option will not have any effects. I wondered if that message would go after we got to the 31st that was mentioned in their email but it still came up today. I'll see what happens tomorrow (and then maybe I'll have to buy a tent!) |

Whilst waiting for my NHS volunteer ID check I volunteered to deliver prescriptions to old people in our village. My day started at 7:00am and ended at 17:30. I took no lunchbreak and went through half a tank of petrol going to every pharmacy in the area.
My final pharmacy was small village pharmacy where one particular small minded person wanted letters of confirmation to pick up those scripts. Whilst I was filling in unsanitised forms on an unwashed clipboard with an unwashed pen, other people with English accents came in and collected scripts for others with no questions asked.
I have been asked not to collect persciptions because of the small minded bigotry of one person.
This suits me fine. If the people of Great Britain would rather die than let go of their racism then knock yourselves out.
I work from home and am in no danger of COVID-19. The only risk is when I stick my neck out to help others, but given the fascist attitudes brimming behind this so called 'Nationalism', I'm more inclined to leave people in the mess they voted for.

Devil's advocate here, I'm guessing that the other people collecting scrpts were known to the pharmacist and did so on a regular basis. I don't know if that is breaking the rules but I know from experience it does happen. Now put yourself in the pharmacist's position for a moment. A complete stranger (with whatever accent) comes in to collect a list of drugs. I think it would be remiss of them to not check? |

I am white and British. But grew up in Zimbabwe and then South Africa. I have a noticeable South African accent.
I was born a British citizen and am no less British than Boris Johnson. My great grandfather fought for the British in the boer war, my grandfather was a Japanese POW and my father fought for the allies in WWII.
I was amongst the 405 000 who first volunteered for NHS. I have applied for CBS certification so I can be of more service to my country. I realise that I am putting myself at risk but considering all the stupid things I have done in my life that should have killed me this is the one thing worth dying for.

No it was very clear that the other people who came in while I was being made to jump through hoops did not know the pharmacists nor the people receiving medication.
I had been into the same pharmacy earlier in the day but did not have cause to speak. They processed the list I gave them with no objection. I probably went to ten other pharmacies who handed out baskets full of meds with no question.
Whereas the attitude to other the customers was friendly and helpful these people were rude, agressive and condescending towards me. I don't expect gratitude for giving up a days earnings to help others. But I also don't expect to be disrespected either. |

One more thing I want to add it that I saw more elderly people in one day than I usually see in a month. And they are very very scared. Visibly so.
If you have elderly parents or grandparents, please keep on touch with them. More now than ever before. Appreciate them like never before. |

The youngest victim of the virus today was a 13 year old boy. Most people don’t get severely ill - but some do - even without being elderly or having pre-existing conditions. None of us should take it lightly - but yeah - I’m with my mum almost daily. Xx |

I lost my job last week. Today I started working for NHS delivering supplies to the wards. The NHS is crying out for people. So many off sick. We were incredibly busy today, 12 hours no breaks.

Hi all. I have been on duty now 72 hours and the alarm hasn’t gone off once. I have played with the app and know my way around it ok. Is it working for others ? It would be interesting to here how busy others have been |

Have you had the email confirming your ID has been verified and confirmed and you are accepted ? |

You go into the Me bit at the top and there's about 8 options with an on/off button. Slide the on duty one.
Does anyone know if when you get an alert it tells you what it's for, getting food/meds/phone call? It didn't on my simulated one, it just told me how far away they were. |

I've had the email. I've got the app and I'm registered.
However when I press the toggle it says "if you are registered under goodsam this will not have any effect"
And then it turns itself off.
It's also turning off all of the other options such as showing my name etc. |

Bottom left there is me bottom click that and scroll down and you will see Report on duty. Click on that and it will go red |

I *think* the on-duty element is for trained emergency workers only.
Us mere mortal volunteers are using the same app, but we're not part of the on-duty element. (That *appears* to be for, say, help if someone is having a cardiac arrest - and so the trained experts get alerted)
Thats not us - we're to to the simple tasks. I'm assuming we'll just get a notification message.
Android deffo says the on-duty option does not apply to us and won't don't do anything even if seleted.

Media are saying that the system is nigh on ready to roll out, it depends upon referrals from the NHS for what assistance they require..
Once they upload a request then a volunteer can if available allocate themselves to that..
