Sick pay v Government bailout

Cannock

I've started a new job in the past months, working with vulnerable young people - one of the government's key workers. As I've yet to have complete my 6 month probationary period, I won't qualify for SSP. So if I contract Covid19 (and with my job, theres a high chance I will) I will get no wages first least 2 weeks.

My son is a student (college now closed) and has a part time contract with McDonalds and has now been furloughed, so will be paid in full until April 5th and then get 80% of his wages paid from the government scheme.

Whilst I don't begrudge him, or any other worker from being given this assistance, it irks me that I and my colleagues are 'doing our bit' for little or no thanks or help from the government, while many are effectively being paid to stay at home and not get ill. In the meantime, I'm working in close proximity with people who have no concept of corononavirus- yesterday alone, I was spat in the face twice and slapped for my troubles.

I'm not looking for pity- it's a job I chose to do and love doing. It just feels rather unjust, especially when other keyworkers are getting the recognition they deserve.

Things are unjust for many people right now.

Perhaps check with your employer if sick pay rules have been relaxed at this time?

You should get sick pay from day one of being sick ( this applies to covid 19 only )

At the moment giving people a universal wage whilst we cannot work would be fairest. The example of people in new jobs is fair, as would be contractors who are getting zero support right now and those that have recently lost good jobs and now have to live off of savings.

Why not give everyone who is of working age £500 per week no matter what their circumstances? It would cost about £180bn over 3 months, but it would mean everyone was treated equally.

Its only if you're sick with Covid-19 itself I think.

I really think that some kind of basic payment to everyone is the only way

Or we are going to end up in a worse state

I think alot of people are still thinking this is a holiday and we will all go back to normal soon

Pick up where we left off

Not happening!
