Why has the media labelled COVID-19 as Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses have been around for a long time and are a group classification of viral conditions so why now change the definition to refer to just the current viral outbreak?
It may be a petty point but if the media/governments/experts can't get thd basics right then what else are they not saying that is factually correct?
P.S. just stimulating conversation knowing that some will bite. |

Yup. Media reporting of science sucks. |

"COVID-19 is the name of the illness caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV2.
The media reporting of science is shit at the best of times.... "

Wish people would stop blaming the "media". If it wasn't for the media we would know fuck all. |

a) How does the link help with the OPs statement and
b) I'm not the only one to say media reporting of science is shit.
Obviously there is different media coverage with variable accuracy, but on average, media reporting of science in general is poor. I've written to numerous newspapers before now, correcting reports calling E.coli a virus or pointing out antibacterial does not equal anti viral. |

Ah. In that case, I rest my case.

The link is the official government (NHS) statement around Covid-19 which many people refer to as coronavirus. That's why I posted the link.
Anyone that has seen the recent BBC or Sky TV coverage of this issue should be proud of our news reporting. I don't know the issues you refer to but I know many science journalists and their knowledge and the reporting of it, and the checks they make, is probably better than anywhere else in the world. |

The Beeb is generally good, but the print media is wildly variable scientifically, and obviously online varies from the sublime to the ridiculous at times. We'd hope everyone looks to reputable sites like NHS, CDC, WHO etc but alas many don't. |

absolutely agree about print. Especially the tabloids in this instance that are purely chasing circulation or page views. The quality press and the TV news channels have been outstanding in their reporting I think. |

To be fair, I don't think the BBC, Sky, etc. have done a bad job of reporting and updating people. It was a tongue in cheek post. Fake news and social media are the worst sources of mis-information (as always), IMHO of course. |
