Literally, how will we all cope?

How can people pay rent and bills with zero income?

Surely there will come a time when the government have to say "right, everything back to normality"

So many businesses are going to go bankrupt.

I seriously think we are looking at the government giving us some sort of 'basic payment' and rationing food

If people cant pay their rent or mortgage, dont know if they even have a job anymore, and cant afford food, there will be civil unrest

And then what happens after the crisis? When half the country are in financial trouble?

Its an absurd idea. The government paying us. Ludicrous

But it may be the only way

I've no choice but to work. that's it.

already technically gone bankrupt, but you get used to the various obstacles and HAVE to adjust. fairly cheerful about it and have to cut back on expenses, its all about your mindset.

For some people it's impossible to save. What about people who are on zero hour contracts? Businesses whose income isn't guaranteed? The self employed who don't know where their next work is going to come from?

Wake up, it's damn hard for so many people.

Universal credit will help some, not all.

It’s difficult as lots of the debt advisory services might not be available. Some advice is available online though and Stepchange is the governments Debt Advisory Service. They are free.

Aren’t they considering special measures for renters as well?

We have several months money living costs saved and I am very thankful we are not in the financial position we were several years ago where we were living off a combination of benefits and very meagre wages.

I feel for a few of my friends who are genuinely struggling and will help them out if necessary, but saying that I feel far less sorry for my friend who keeps buying new clothes, spa treatment and car payments while constantly living above their income who has been complaining at me today about how all their work has dried up and how she can't afford to buy food and pay the rent...

I hope the news tomorrow will help people be able to be far less stressed and tide everyone over.

I'm waiting a tad longer for more data

However my gut tells me it's going to be an excruciating disaster for the vast majority

I'll add however

Please dont forget the 1000s who lost everything in a flood

If the 90 % of the whole world needs money whereas it coming from and it's not going to be short term

I personally don't know a single minimum wage person who can save. Most of us live hand to mouth. Personally I break even every month and I'm far from the worse state. I have no mortgage, no credit card, no contract phone and no loans. But I have no equity or value to the capitalist world either. We need to start looking out for each other and not be waiting around for big daddy and his rich uncles to come to the rescue. The government has made their agenda very clear. Protect the economy.

Universal credit? Universal income?

I’ve never heard anything so daft.

The government simply can’t afford it. TAX pays for everything a government spends. The fewer people work, the less tax is paid, the less money a government has to spend. Simple economics.

If they were serious about social isolating they would have ordered every social place to shut immediately. But they haven’t because then they would be liable for the cost of it.

Universal credit already took 6-8 weeks to co e through before this. Do you think it will be quicker with an extra 2 million applications next week? No. Of course not.

That’s why they are being sly and wishy washy about isolating. The second they make it compulsory is the second they have to pay. And the government simply doesn’t have the reserves.

Oh, small business, have a loan...that you won’t be able to pay back when you do finally reopen in 3 months. Then we will just make you bankrupt. It’s kicking shit down the road.

Support your local shops. Stick 2 fingers up to the big chains as they chose profit 2 months ago instead of stopping morons from buying all the loo roll, hand wash and pasta.

My local shops are great. They’ve got stuff and I got eggs from a local farm today. Awesome people.

You are right, you have no idea about us and you are making yourself look very ignorant.

Some people are self employed in a business where they have absoloutely no idea of what the selling price will be until point of sale. The industry is immensley turbulent and people have been through long periods where the selling price is significantly less than the production price, but they don't have any say over the selling price. It is dictated to them. They have had bad circumstances (which were beyond anyones control) to deal with one year, which more than halved their annual income overnight. However, we weren't specifically talking about us, but since you seem to have little idea how other people have to try and make ends meet, we have explained a little about the real struggle some businesses face.

I don’t smoke or take drugs. I drink at Xmas as I drive for a living. I don’t have expensive holidays. My car is a Motability car.

I work hard for shit money. I spend my money on my kids in the hope that I can give them a better start to their lives than I had.

Living hand to mouth you deserve everything you get????? Really??? Nice attitude.

Tell that to the nurses who will save your life when you get ill but can’t afford to feed their kids.

Dumbass!!!!!

"i do wonder if there is some sort of "universal basic income" announcement coming...

it looks like that is the approach of a lot of european countries, plus the US, Canada and Australia......

"

Well I hope they aren't planning on paying key workers that as well rather than their wage in full

I dont think there is going to be a choice

The world's economy is simply going to have to go on 'hold'

so then becomes the question? how much?

i have heard the figure "£1000 per month" for each adult, £500 per month for each child"

would that be enough? too much?

And how do they determine who gets it?

How is it accessible?

I dont have the answers Fabio

But I think its coming

Bet I won’t as I’m self employed. By the time they’ve worked out who’s entitled to what it will probably be too late for most. It seems to me people need help now! Not in 2 weeks time "

I think it would have to be an across the board payment

Not means tested

If those figures are accurate I’ll stop working now. That’s more than I earn in a month when you factor in me, my 18 year old and 2 younger ones

"Universal credit?

"

You make some good points but you only have to look to the Great Depression during the 1930’s to see what mistakes were made then, and the government would be wise to learn from that. Some countries could be heading for that scenario or the Japanese scenario of a lost decade of stagflation. I think even the cleverest economist would struggle to work out what the UK can do now with the pound at its lowest level for 35 years, lowest interest rates ever, and with brexit on the horizon.

This will be a world wide problem.

Not just UK, millions around the world forced to stop work or can't work due to government advise, it's catch 22. Work and risk infection of yourself and others and pay bills, or stay at home and don't pay bills or buy food.

While those in charge are worrying about the the world's finances this virus will not stop anytime soon. The virus is going to kill 1000s if not millions around the world. I worry that the economic and social problems the world will face after will probably kill more than the virus its self.
