OMG!!
My son just tried to order pizza for collection from a Pizza Hut delivery unit and was told he can’t pay cash!! Orders from head office.
What the actual fuck?!?!?!?!?
Are people REALLY this fucking stupid????
Pizza Hut Uk head office says they’ve NOT issued any such orders. I’m totally gobsmacked.
Yes I know it’s a franchise but then the franchise operator should be stripped of their franchise as this is stupidity at its worst!!!!
Cash is still legal tender in this country. If you don’t want to accept it - CLOSE |

Don't see the issue personally - lots of places have been moving towards cashless for some time and with contactless etc it's relatively simple to pay by card - saves delivery drivers having to carry cash etc so makes sense.
If you don't like it don't order from them - it really is that simple |

I work in a small shop and have to handle cash, this week I got us gloves to use, I have no idea who’s touched your tenner before you got it, I live in a town where they take a lot white powdery things, before this past couple of weeks I’ve hated handling what others stick in their nose, right now, I’m using gloves.
Have all the pizza you like but please remember this store protocol wasn’t put there as a poke against you personally, it was put there so the guy bringing your pizza today, can bring you another next week too, can’t you help him out a little too |

You know what?
Cash is still legal tender.
You don’t want to sell your goods or services for cash then shut down and go online ONLY.
We are NOT in a cashless society.
Jesus Christ. Get a grip. You’re more likely to get cocaine over your hands from cash than coronavirus.
Millions of people don’t have a full bank account with a debit card. They don’t want it.
And then to add insult to injury they told me it’s ‘Government guidelines’.
Has anyone seen these government guidelines?????? |

"Virtually all businesses have stopped handling cash here where I am, coins especially."
Cash is STILL legal tender.
You can’t refuse it if you’re a cash business. It’s against the law.
You can only refuse if you are an online only business and don’t physically have anywhere to take the cash. |

Costa have moved to not taking cash from tomorrow too - not sure if that's a general thing or just my local branch where I saw the announcement - they will also only either key in the number of your loyalty card if you read it out 9t scan the app.

Errr no it's not against the law - this from an on-line article from 2018 - note the quote from the Bank Of England:
"What can I do if they refuse my notes or coins?
You don’t really have any rights. If a shopkeeper refuses a transaction, your only real option is to just go elsewhere.
You can’t force them to accept your cash or report them to the authorities if they don’t.
As the Bank of England says: “Whether you pay with banknotes, coins, debit cards or anything else as payment is a decision between you and the other person involved in the transaction.”"

Ok, so we may as well close down the Bank of England. Stop printing and pressing notes and coins.
Let’s go cashless.
Oh yeah, and the millions of people who rely on cash will get screwed over.
It’s all well and good for people in their ivory towers but for those people who don’t ace access to anything other than cash it’s just not possible.
Reality check time.
Asda and Tesco take millions in cash every day. They haven’t stopped.
I DO have access to card payments but that’s just not the point.
This is yet another example of stupidity and lunatics taking over the asylum.
Yes you have to be reasonable. But, refusing to take cash is yet another stop on a very slippery slope.
If you can’t see that then better get to specsavers. (Where they may or may not accept your cash) |

no, quite the opposite, order with them and when they arrive if they dont accept cash, send them packing
the more people that do this, the sooner they will change their attitude |

Also cash is all there was. There was no alternative.
Bottom line is adapt to what is happening and thrive, or fail to adapt and be left behind.
Sooner or later physical cash will no longer exist (later obviously). Might as well start getting used to it.
It is legal tender but also they don't have to take your custom. Simple as that.
They made a choice for their own health/peace of mind, accept it, stop complaining and get on with life. Have a problem with it just don't give them your custom.
Businesses should make it clear before hand that they won't be taking physical payments however. |

Get on with life? That’s what I’m trying to do. But judging by the many comments on this forum we should all lock ourselves away for the next 18months and pray.
Getting on with life is NOT accepting stupidity in the face of adversity.
Getting on with life is actually living your life.
Be sensible, stay away from people at greater risk, clean, clean, clean and get in with daily life. |

But your not getting on with life. You are complaining, pointlessly on an Internet forum about something that you can't control or change. Getting clearly worked up and unhealthily angry and frustrated. Complaining about somebody else's decision to do something for their own peace of mind. What has your rant actually acompkished? Did it suddenly make the change for all these places suddenly revert their decisions and now they have started taking cash again? |

Nearly half of humanity died during the first Bubonic Plague. Is that not enough for you or would you say humanity survived if only 2 people were left alive?
You are being the opposite of sensible, and all over a pizza transaction. You'll be fighting in Tesco for loo roll next.

That's all well and good, but if we all adopt that attitude then millions more people will needlessly die world over. During Spanish Flu we didn't have air travel, so the spread of infection is far far quicker with COVID-19.
If people/businesses don't want to handle cash it's not some personal affront to you, it is them taking whatever precautions necessary to keep them and their loved ones safe. We have to consider more than just ourselves during this pandemic. The person who refuses cash may be thinking of their partner who has an autoimmune disease, or their mother who has cancer, or even a relative of a colleague who is immunocompromised/has an underlying health condition. Everything we do has a knock on effect when we're fighting an invisible enemy.
Those are all sensible precautions to take. Hopefully more people would follow your example on those fronts, but don't aim your anger towards others if they deem it necessary to take further precautions |

Spanish flu killed 20 million people. People then didn't understand how to control its transmission. We do know better now and the coronavirus can be transmitted via cash as it can stay on any surface for 3 days. Personally I think the decision by Pizza Hut and others not to handle cash is a sensible one. Not sure why OP is getting so worked up over it. |

"Did humanity survive? Yes
Is stupidity alive and well? Seems like it.
20 million people didn't survive. So that's OK then "
So it’s ok to let the less well of starve is it? To kick families out on to the street? To scaremonger?
It’s estimated that if the UK does nothing it will kill less than 500000. Not quite 20 million is it???
But to take sensible precautions and to ask the more vulnerable to isolate from the rest of the population is a better way to go than attempting to lock down the country for months on end.
Millions live day to day. Week to week. Paycheck to paycheck.
Are you going to take them in when they get evicted?
Are you going to be happy to see them die because everyone panicked and didn’t see that healthy people can carry on with their lives?
No. Not unless you’re a total asshole. You obviously have compassion for others but you are not thinking rationally nor practically.
If 400000 people like me stopped working tomorrow for 2 weeks - EVERYONE WOULD BE FUCKED.
Why? Because 400000 is roughly the amount of current HGV license holders in the UK.
If they ALL stopped for 2 weeks you would ha e no food in 2 days.
End of story.
Get real. Get sensible.
It’s not sensible for everyone to go into lockdown. We all accept the risks when we go to work so stop pontificating and get real.
You want to eat??? Let US get on with OUR jobs.
I don’t want to go to the cinema or the pub but I should as these places will go bankrupt if we lock down for months. Then millions in hospitality will be out of work.
Less people working = less tax paid.
Less tax paid = less money for government.
So who’s paying the benefits to those out of work through no fault of their own??
Have you got a spare £500 billion?? |

You’ve not read anything I’ve posted. Nor have you realized what I’m trying to point out.
You are exactly the type of person I would actively avoid contact with - not because of anything you’ve said as I’m happy to debate anything face to face with anyone.
But the sheer fact that you have a respiratory condition. Makes you very high risk. And whilst I’m not, I wouldn’t dream of risking YOUR health.
But then that’s kinda been my point all along.....you just either missed it or chose to ignore it to further your views.
I sincerely and from the bottom of my heart hope you stay fit and healthy and don’t require anything more than a paracetamol over the next 18months.

This has gone way off track and the entire point has been missed - if EVERYWHERE suddenly refused to take cash OP then I might have some sympathy with what you have your knickers in a knot about - but as you yourself have pointed out many major retailers ARE accepting cash - if one has refused to do so for very valid reasons to them, then that is their prerogative - don't like it? Move on to another retailer that does take cash, it really *is* that simple. |

That delivery driver could potentially be knocking on the door of dozens and dozens of people and having to engage in face to face conversation. If the order is paid by card in advance, it reduces the risk to a worker. OP sons should be grateful for what he gets whilst he gets it. People go with less every day. |

"Ok, so we may as well close down the Bank of England.
(Where they may or may not accept your cash) "

"Virtually all businesses have stopped handling cash here where I am, coins especially.
Cash is STILL legal tender.
You can’t refuse it if you’re a cash business. It’s against the law.
You can only refuse if you are an online only business and don’t physically have anywhere to take the cash. "
Where did you get that ridiculous idea from?
To quote from the Bank of England's own website;
"A shop owner can choose what payment they accept. If you want to pay for a pack of gum with a £50 note, it’s perfectly legal to turn you down. Likewise for all other banknotes, it’s a matter of discretion. If your local corner shop decided to only accept payments in Pokémon cards that would be within their right too. But they’d probably lose customers." |

Jesus Christ. Get a grip. You’re more likely to get cocaine over your hands from cash than coronavirus.

The thing is though they *do* have plenty of options - the vast majority of places still accept cash - so the OP getting his knickers in a knot over *one* retailer refusing to accept it is an over reaction of mammoth proportions.
IF we moved to a completely cashless society then steps and measures would be put in place to accommodate all but that's a totally separate debate from the OP's son not being able to order pizza!! |

Not so, Norway is a cashless society and it works just perfectly. In fact a lot of people in the UK wanted a Norway style Brexit, that’s how well they think that country works.
Just an example of how cashless works perfectly well.

I would agree. Whilst I can understand why they may have introduced this category, in respect of the handling of the banknotes, you could argue that they are still handling your food.
I would present them with the argument that cash is legal tender in the United Kingdom and if they are not prepared to accept it then you will cancel your order. Personally, I'd go further and e-mail the CEO of Pizza Hut telling them that I would not be using them again in the future, even once the panic is over |

I imagine that the CEO of pizza hut will be quite relieved that you are never going to order from them again. In fact if i was them, i would already have you on a list of addresses to never deliver to again. You don't have to buy from them. But they don't have to sell to you. |

Not an option? What a load of runbish. My grandmother is 93. About a decade ago she decided that she'd like to be able to pay for things with a debit card so as to not have to carry money around with her.
She went into her bank, had a 20 minute conversation with the bank manager who helped her to fill in a form, and 3 days later she had a debit card.
You seem to think that old people are helpless - I'd call that ageism. Grow up |

The costs of handling cash are far greater than processing an electronic transaction. It's also a safer way of handling revenue, so the retailers handling cash are passing over the costs of doing so to their customers. |

Might be true for larger operations but I think opposite is true for small businesses. My local café will not accept cards...cash only. Local garden centre has a lower limit for card transaction.....
For me use what is appropriate... £ 1:50 coffee : CASH. £ 50:00 restraunt bill : Card... |

Have a similar attitude towards Direct Debit compared to a standing order.
In both cases (cards and DD), we, the customer are ceding power to the supplier for no advantage to us...

Sorry mate, I'm as much a luddite as most people, but you're seeing demons where there are none, as far as DDs and card payments are concerned. There are guarantees and safeguards built in. But of course it's your prerogative to take your custom elsewhere if you are dissatisfied with any service for any reason. But real concerns about self-preservation need to be respected right now.
God forgive me, but i've even started using contactless where possible, despite having completely shunned it until now.
Regardless, hope you stay covid free. |

No advantage to us, the consumer?
How about not having to worry about having enough cash on me? I see that as an advantage personally.
Or not having to contact the bank to adjust a payment because a Direct Debit ensures the company I contracted with will do it *AND* be held responsible if they get it wrong? That's an advantage to me.
As for having a choice on the payment method - you absolutely do - you have the choice to accept the method offered by the provider of the service, or if you don't, find a provider that does accept your preferred method.

It's good that many governments have wanted to take moves against organisations that are trying to exclude cash, as it disenfranchises many even further from society.

*IF* and it's a bloody big IF it were a universal thing rolled out by *ALL* businesses to not accept cash, then I'd understand the problem - and even then it would be done as a phased thing and only once everyone had had a chance to have a means to pay for their goods and services - but most retailers are still accepting cash so it's no real hardship that some aren't |

It appears that, rather than understand a transaction is simply an agreement between two people that you believe there is some weight to you being the one with the means to pay for the item. Sometimes things are a little skewed in favour of the supplier .... ie when you’re hungry and the pizza company has a pizza you’d like. You’re making comment regarding ceding power and the like.... you have the means to pay for something ... you are not a god!
In this case the companies/individuals have chosen to reduce the risk to their staff/ themselves and their customers... how are people being lead by the nose? I can’t see it! Where’s the power shift ???? In the mode of payment? Absolute twaddle... I can only presume when you had your business rather than meeting supply with demand and all parties leaving an interaction equal, you were a snivelling idiot, begging for the money of those superior to yourself and are now so bitter you want a piece of being the big man while you dangle your £10 note to the peasants! |

Just one comment, never was, nor am I a "snivelling idiot"....!! Ran my business for 25 years, had many satisfied clients who used my services repeatedly. Feel I must have got something right....!! |

"It's a no-brainer, I've seen people take £10 notes out of their mouth before handing them over to the checkout staff
No contact, no transmission.
It’s legal tender. We’ve used cash for centuries. Throughout the plague. Throughout the Spanish flu. "
Yeah, damn them, they should have built a time machine, come to the future, and then taken the cashless technology back with them...I do despair of some people on here. |

"Flew home with Ryanair last night.
They now only accept card payments. No cash at all."
Because it is a Ryanair business practise: I would hardly regard that as a ringing endorsement....!!
Just ask someone who works for them what they think of their T & Cs. Don't get me started....!! |

Agree with every single word right up to the sentence that starts with "I can only presume..." which was based on assumption and conjecture and nothing more, and was therefore totally unnecessary and uncalled for |

Do all these people who will not handle cash because of possible germs wear gloves or use an appropriate wet wipe before grabbing a trolley for their panic buying?
What will happen to Car Boot sales if we go cashless?
God knows how I have lived to be 80 when for a lot of my working life I have been handling cash. |

While that was the slightly angered part of my post .... the poster clearly believed his ramblings and I can only take that as his experience and understanding of the world ... there was no background information.... if the poster now believes his position in the world to be as he demonstrates with his thoughts where all who take his pound are duty bound to do so, and be thankful, no matter how harmful and uncaring his method of delivery, I stand by my little rant based on nothing but presumption hence “I can only presume”. But thanks for agreeing to the point you did and maybe the poster will read beyond your final comments.... |

They possibly when returning to their car use a sanitiser and avoid touching their face etc while shopping .... a reasonable risk reduction method though far from infallible. Car boot sales ... to be honest I’m not arsed but in the ‘cashless’ world we can use simple methods of taking payments electronically.
I’ve handled cash both in my working life and in my personal life .(you aren’t alone) ... I’ve become ill at times and got over it ... I possibly blamed the curry, the girl who had a runny nose, etc when all along it was the banknote I accepted before I took a drink from my glass. The ones taking note after note didn’t consider it before but then something came along which, potentially, would cause their suffering, death or the death of a relative.... so they sought to reduce the risk! I have no understanding why, whether it’s reality or comfort, someone would deny another person that! |

"OMG!!
If you don’t want to accept it - CLOSE"
Goats are legal tender too, as is anything else someone puts a value on.
Right now, I understand their position, why accept cash that may have bacteria on it when you don't have to.
Despite all the numbers you've already said 'I’m carrying on and I don’t give 2 hoots if people don’t like it'. But some others might have a different perspective.
I'm guessing by your age that your son is old enough to have a debit card, so why can't he pay with that.
Simple measures will make a difference. |

"Virtually all businesses have stopped handling cash here where I am, coins especially.
Cash is STILL legal tender.
You can’t refuse it if you’re a cash business. It’s against the law.
You can only refuse if you are an online only business and don’t physically have anywhere to take the cash. "
Why do you think that legal tendet has anything to do with it? I'm not sure you completely understand how the law works.
Nothing against the law took place here. |

Norovirus (corona is one) dont really live on cash.
WHO said handling cash is safer than credit cards.
Just wash your hands after handling cash, as you might have touched hands with the person, and other bacteria can live on money
Remember if you use a credit card virus can live on it much easier, try not to touch the payment point with the card, clean the card every day, make sure your wallet is a material that virus dont like to grow on, otherwise clean your wallet too. |

Not sure if it's been pointed out already...
I do my shopping, picking up goods which I have no idea who stacked the shelves, whether another shopper has picked up and replaced, go to the checkout, the cashier on the till then takes the goods from me and is happy to handle them whilst scanning, yet the shops don't like to handle notes or coins...? |

look in these trying times
when people don't have a job
and money isnt there.... sob
we can turn our thoughts to other things
like how your other half sings
or selling your wedding rings
i myself dont have that choice
i dont even have a RollsRoyce
but i do have a voice
I'm in my bed naked not horny
the thought of food is really thorny
help in my time of need
suggest ways that you can feed
this starving man
whats your best plan |

Well said. A virus can last about 24 hours on paper and cardboard and up to 3 days on plastic and stainless steel.
Follow guidelines and regularly wash you hands especially before eating.
The use of hand sanitizers will kill the virus and help slow down the infection rate.
Unfortunately there were too many selfish people who went out panic buying and others trying to make money on the back of this virus by stockpiling and inflating the price of sanitizers.
Don’t panic buy this is one of the worst things to do!!
I went into Tesco the other day and it was rammed people pushing passed each other to fill their trolleys
Let’s hope the person they pushed passed wasn’t infected. I turned around and left as toilet paper isn’t worth getting infected for.
Think of others not just yourself cut down contact With people to slow the virus down.
Stay safe and keep washing those hands. |

I'd like to see citations for some of those assertions...
Also - viruses won't "grow" on your wallet. They require living cells of a compatible species to reproduce. Unless we're talking about the "old prison wallet"? |

"That delivery driver could potentially be knocking on the door of dozens and dozens of people and having to engage in face to face conversation. If the order is paid by card in advance, it reduces the risk to a worker. OP sons should be grateful for what he gets whilst he gets it. People go with less every day." I refused to pay cash on my fruit and veg delivery. I don't want dirty cash being handed to me at this point. Majority have online banking. Easy way to pay. Bank transfer, done in an instant. |

Bought pack of nine toilet rolls and had them put in a bag. Could have been mugged for them. |
