We were talking with a chap last night who delivery drives for a very large paper products manufacturer in the Midlands.
He said: 'We arrive each day to pick up our loads for deliveries and there are literally hundreds of thousands of toilet rolls in the warehouse floor-to-ceiling and more being made every day - people don't need to panic buy. We are never going to run out of toilet rolls!!!'

I want to be a bit ahead of where I normally am in terms of a stockpile. If I need to isolate for two weeks then I want to not leave the house and not have anyone come to me. I'm sure lots of people thinking the same still causes some issues... But those seriously hoarding are causing chaos, including to those trying to be prudent. |

And this is where the problem comes.
The government says you MUST self isolate.
So that means DO NOT GO OUT. You can’t get stuff delivered so the only other option is to buy enough to last 2 weeks in case.
But then that means shortages for everyone else.

Its not the production but the distribution we may need to worry about. It's great if they are in a warehouse but if people have to stay at home....."
Distribution isn’t a problem. As an HGV driver I’ve just been given the green light to drive slightly longer IF I need to in order to get essentials to distribution centers or shops.
That doesn’t mean to deliver a sofa to a customers home though. Just the essentials and food to where they need to be to allow people to buy them for themselves. |

We have a paper milk in Maesteg and one in Baglan so both within 10 miles each way of my house. People still going nuts for it.
I was in Morrisons yesterday and made a funny. Me and my friend were looking for toilet roll then got to the cleaning stuff where all the wipes were, I said fuck it I’ll wipe my arse with a leather wipe! Made my friend laugh and two guys in the same aisle  |

He says because the supermarkets do not have the storage space in each shop so they are delivered daily (on a JIT basis). And people are buying too many too fast. He's a delivery driver one of many. They are delivering. |

ALL warehouses work on a ‘just in time’ system. It takes a while to ramp it up and they don’t physically have the space to hold more than 2-3 days worth of supplies.
Think about it this way....
Asda needs 10 pallets of loo roll. But there are say 120 stores supplied from one depot. So that 1200 pallets. For 2 days supply.
26 pallets per artic.
47 lorry loads.
For 2 days. For one depot. For 120 stores.
See how it soon mounts up?? We are 50000 drivers short as it is in the UK.
We are doing our best though and our hours have been extended.
Please let the lorries through - they may be carrying essentials. It’s important that they get there in one piece with as little stress as possible.
Isn’t it funny how lorry drivers are denigrated and derided until people realise how important we are.

There was a TV News report earlier in the week where Loo Paper manufacturers have stepped up production, but cannot get the stocks out to the retailers.
One factory owner, said he was producing 154,000 loo rolls a day, but the supermarkets and hauliers as a whole are struggling with the distribution of everything to shops etc. |

I’m engineering manager for a tissue manufacturing mill and we make approximately 70 tonnes of toilet tissue per day and that’s just us, we are one of many in the uk and many produce double our output. We will never run out of toilet rolls and the problem is people are buying at a rate that is physically impossible to replace at. The hauliers are doing their job safely and responsibly, the warehouses are doing their job and the supermarkets are doing their job. It’s the small minded people who panic buy thinking the supply chain is going to collapse and there will be no food etc in the shops. Perhaps if everyone had to self isolate at once it would, but that isn’t going to happen is it. People will be off and then go back to work, then someone else will be off. Maybe multiple at same time but not everyone in the uk at once. We all need to calm the fuck down and work together to make this as easy and pleasant as possible.

I don’t know anyone who has ever derided or denigrated a lorry driver.
Except for when they drive like twunts and pull out in front of a car doing 70mph to their 45mph, just so that they don’t have to brake themselves - then it’s gloves off.
Otherwise you do an amazing job and most people are grateful, or live in ignorance. |

I drive lorries, and I've recently been into a warehouse of a very large canned food manufacturer. They were stocked floor to ceiling of a god-knows-how-many acre site of tinned food - and this wasn't before the shelves began emptying. Trust me, behind the scenes everything is fine, except the excessive hours we're now having to work! |

All of the manufacturers and distributors are working to a normal model .... which ensures normal supply. People panicking changes that model faster than any supply chain can cope with.... and then boom out of stocks. If we dont as a nation over react... we wont have an issue. However people are people and we end up where we are. |

Unfortunately my wife and I both have a condition called bile acid malabsorption. This basically give us almost constant runs. We each can go through a roll a day if we get a bad flare up. We each take up to 12 loporimide when we go out or play to avoid accidents but this can't be done that often. We are getting worried that we are going to run out soon but even if we can get our hands on the three ply gold we won't horde it. Others have conditions with similar symptoms and they need it too. If people like us can resist panic buying when we actually have a genuine need there the rest of you can too. |

So how much do we rally need?
I'm on lockdown and bored shitless (pun intended) so let's do the maths.
With the possibility of facing a two week isolation I don't think it is unreasonable for people to stock up with enough to cover that length of time.
I've just taken a look at our pack of Lidl's own and each roll has 160 sheets.
So we will take the average nuclear family 2 adults and 2 kids (one of each) and let's say the man/boy go for a shit twice a day each (some will be less but let's be generous) Doubled up they will probably use 10/12 sheets per shit. Again we will be generous so will say 4x12=48, We will also give the woman/girl the same so 48x2=96.
Now we have to factor in that the woman girl will use more when pissing (not easy for them to shake off the drops ). Let's say they each go for a piss 4/5 times a day and use 4 sheets per piss. So again being generous that is 8x5=40.
Take the 40 then add the 96 from the shitting Dept. and you get a grand total of 136 sheets per day.
For ease of reckoning we will put the odd 24 sheets down to other uses (nose blowing Etc.) Which means that the average family using the same 160 sheet ones as us will use one roll per day.
Two weeks supply would be 14 rolls.
I will now stare at the walls for another hour while glancing at Sky news predicting the apocalypse and think of some more rubbish to write later.

There are a limited amount of delivery slots.
There simply isn’t enough supply of refrigerated vans to go around so if you think supermarkets can deliver to every household in Britain once a week - climb out of you dreamworld and off your unicorn into the real world.
People will still need to go shopping.
Just try and pick tines when you think it will be quieter. Easier said than done when you have to chase round 19 stores just to get your normal weekly shop. I anticipate this week it will take 3 to 4 attempts to get what I need for myself and my kids and my ex as she can’t risk going out with her health conditions. I’m happy to do it but my life would be easier if the supermarkets had stopped this in its tracks before it got started.
Instead of bleating now about there being plenty of supply, why the hell dis they allow people to buy 3 trolleys full of loo roll and hand sanitizer in the first place??? |

Can I please recommend that you ask your doc for Cholestagel tablets (colesevelam hydrochloride)? Loperamide won't treat bile acid malabsorption. You can also reduce it by reducing the foods that generate more bile secretion ie lower fat. I stopped eating red meat, stopped fried anything and cut fat off everything. That, plus Cholestagel was the solution to the problem and I have few symptoms any more. |
