Think of it this way. Every child in the country is now off school. Who's going to look after them? Probably their grandparents because parents cant afford too much time off work.
And grandparents are the most at risk with this disease.
Also, is this theory taking into account the 350 billion that the government is going to use to keep businesses afloat? |

Why just the children? The government is responsible for the country as a whole.
Closing the schools has a negative effect on other groups in society. As it stands children are in one of the low risk categories. |

It's not the children you need to worry about mate it's the elderly and people with health problems that will unfortunatly suffer from this, what you also have to consider is without an economy we are also fucked anyway!
Why try and avoid it when in reality we all need to get it in time to build an emmunity but it's controlling the speed of infection so our hospitals can cope.
Just my opinion |

Closing everything might work against what's probably a short term disease. But what about worst case scenario afterwards when no one has any money, businesses are closed, homes are lost, NHS collapses. Be in a much worst state |

Indeed! Drs and nurses have kids too you know. If you got the virus and needed hospitalization but they said..'oops sorry, can't help, the staff are at home with the kids' , you would be pretty pissed off I'm sure. |

But their measures are tailored to suit their population. China and Italy both have a much larger older generation than most other countries.
I get that people want to stay safe but the consequences of going into lock down are massive so putting it off until there is no other option is the best thing to do. |

The children will be fine.
It's the risk groups such as the elderly, the immuno suppressed and those with underlying respiratory conditions who are most at risk.
It often looks like the govt are only concerned with the economy, I see where you're coming from. But the economy will recover. The dead will not. And without a healthy economy we'll not be able to afford a health service. It's an uncomfortable dichotomy. |

If the economy completely crashes due to locking the entire country down then there will be no more money for the NHS or other services during or after this blip. Production needs to keep happening and supply chains need to be kept running. If people were dying in droves from this then fair enough but they aren't and I think there is some massive overreacting going on, it's only just short of 2000 known cases out of a population of 67 million.... |

Recommendations
The next severe pandemic will not only cause great illness and loss of life but could also trigger major cascading economic and societal consequences that could contribute greatly to global impact and suffering. The Event 201 pandemic exercise, conducted on October 18, 2019, vividly demonstrated a number of these important gaps in pandemic preparedness as well as some of the elements of the solutions between the public and private sectors that will be needed to fill them. The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, World Economic Forum, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation jointly propose these recommendations. |

All those who claim the government is overreacting shutting the country down because there are so few deaths, or those who say that flu kills more people then coronovirus is every year.
Flu occurs throughout the year mainly in winter but you can get it any time. hospitals and local health services are set up and prepared to deal with the number of people who will need to be treated the large numbers of flu victims that need hospital care every year are spread over a long period.
Coronavirus has hit the world in a bang. It is highly virulent and there is no natural immunity so it is spreading through nations like wild fire. Most confirmed corona virus patients are confirmed because they require medical attention, people who show symptoms but can self medicate are not being diagnosed. So the number of people who actually have it is far bigger then that announced. All those people pumping the virus into the air infecting other people.
Now consider you have a hospital geared up to have 100 critical Ill patients a week. Then suddenly over the space of 4 weeks out of no where that number becomes 200 a week, now you have a situation where people cannot be treated, where people die, not just of coronavirus, but other illness because the system has been swamped broken by the mad rush of critically ill patients. That is what coronavirus does to a country. What any pandemic does.
When the government tells you you are not at risk but you need to self isolate they are not trying to scare you, they are not over reacting. They are trying as much as possible to stop the nhs from breaking from the onslaught they know is coming. The numbers on paper may seem small compared to the average flu deaths, but remember, those deaths are all coming over the space of 2-3 weeks at the peak. And for every death there are probably 5-6 or more people who are in a hospital bed fighting this virus, stopping someone who has a normal heart attack, or stroke, or a car accident, or even the flu from getting the care that would save there life.
Understand the facts and the reality, understand that this is not about inconveniencing you for something that is just about panic. Understand this is about saving real lives, the lives of people you know and love. People say they will mitigate there own risk and be careful, but you don’t really know where your germs will go, who they will infect and who, the person you make ill, may stop having the critical care they need because the nhs couldn’t help them.
During this time we as a community should be doing the right thing, stopping events and stopping meeting. |

Not all children are safe there is unfortunately loads of children at risk - asthma, cancer, epilepsy etc are all things many children have which puts them at risk. It's sad but not all children are safe. While keeping children at school also means grandparents picking them up. Alternative is having them at home, grandparents looking after them. With social distancing, children at school is surely a worse option. Least if grandparents looks after children they can practise good hygiene, wash hands etc, household self isolated with symptoms. Then that's a lower risk right than having multiple carriers in the low risk group seeing multiple family members. Personally should this not be a choice given to parents? |

Can’t stand Bo Jo or the Tories but actually think the steps they have been taking are calm and well measured against the current state of the virus, also lucky enough to have a good boss that’s letting Mrs P self isolate for 3 months and doing everything to support her |

Totally agree. People going on like doctors and nurses work 9-3 Monday to Friday and are there to drop off and pick up their kids everyday. Nurses work 12 hour shifts, 7-7, someone is already having looking after their kids to get them to and from school and look after them afterwards till the parents get home.
Children might not get symptoms but may still carry the virus and spread it to others. If the kids are out of school and not mixing with as many people they reduce the risk of transmission to elderly relatives.
There's no ideal solution to this.
Teachers who fall into the risk categories are having to go off now as precaution so the schools are going to have to shut anyway due to lack of staff. |

Parents have the choice, they can keep their kids out of school if they choose to. I'm not sure about the rest of the country but I know in Scotland there has been a 30% drop in attendance. |

The answer is keep under 11's and special needs in school,
The older ones can stay home and look after themselves. I could do it at that age. Day off sick from school, I was fine. Mom came home from work before I knew it, all good. That was before computers and all the fun things teenagers have today.
Some parents are now working from home already.

And they will build immunity.
I've not seen my parents for 3 weeks now.
Its simple isolate the vulnerable and those that care for them and let the virus pass through the low risk groups. |

Same here, what I would like to see is some genuine reassurance that measures are being taken both here and abroad that food stocks will be maintained throughout the current crisis and beyond to try and stop the level of panic buying both now and in the future |

More children’s lives are wrecked by poverty than will be by corona virus.
You tell a child that his parents can no longer afford food and rent because they can’t work against a very very very small risk of a child dying, which I don’t believe has happened yet. |

majority of things being bought up can be stored and kept and essential for day to day life, so they are not going to be wasted, they will be used up through out the year

That's still only short term though isn't it. Food production and processing has to be reduced by all this, to the extent some countries are going to stop exporting, as we're a net importer of food what happens? I'd just like them to tell us all straight what they're all doing to reassure us all because there is bugger all in the shops at the moment! Well there's plenty of toilet duck! |
