Just started on sertraline and so far, I've had a few headaches, feeling very tired, a bit spaced out etc. Do these symptoms last the whole time, or will it mellow out over time?

Also, what was everyone else's experience with this medication?

You would be an incredibly lucky person not to have initial side effects with any anti depressant.

Read the info on the enclosed packet, this will tell you all about side effects (common to rare). Or look at the nhs website, it'll be more succinct.

The GP will want to monitor you over a period of time, so do attend the appointments.

Btw the side effects should settle down.

I had been on these a few time 150mg I really didn't like the way they made me feel very disconnected and I couldn't orgasm

Then the jolts and flashes started to happen

I've been on them many times before, the initial symptoms are difficult but try to focus on your feelings and mood, try to find your previous baseline of normal and measure yourself against that. It's a tricky one as sometimes the sertraline can essentially make you feel numb to everyone and everything around you, but stick with it, happy to talk anytime

Hi I’m actually a speciality emergency medic working in a&e and had experience working in primary care also. I did try privately messaging you but I’m out of your age range.

All medication similar to this carry side effects, and many of them make you feel worse before you feel better, indeed some cause patients to have suicidal thoughts not long after starting them, however you need to bear with them, they’ll take a few months to get used to and gain some benefit from them. We’re not 100% on how they fully work on some people and not on others, so we do often have to trial different ones before we find the right one for you. Keep your gp up to date with your progress. Hope they help and you feel an improvement soon xxx Dean

Long term usage can leave you having twitching, face and maybe other parts of the body which becomes uncontrollable. So must be doing some damage with the nerve system

I was advised many years ago that it's only supposed to be prescribed on a temporary basis

Antidepressants are often prescribed for generalised anxiety. Benzodiazepines can be prescribed very short term, but not for depression.

My son was prescribed them about 6 months ago . He has anxiety and depression. He is also autistic.

He finds he has side effects with some brands of the drug but not others. He's much better on them than without them but he's on a fairly low dose.

If you are concerned speak to your GP or pharmacist.

Best remedies for anxiety and depression is having someone who is willing to not only understand but willing to understand how they look at things in there position

Tablet just numb the pain and try and block the memory of why they are feeling it but talking is healthier and even getting the opportunity to speak to a complete stranger in similar circumstances helps bounce off each other

The side effects should settle down after a few days but obviously if they persist please speak to your GP. The only real side effect I had when I first started on them was yawning !

Had sertraline twice. First they worked. Second time I started to feel really empty and spaced out, no emotion at all at times, but I'm could fuck for hours lol. After a break for 18 months this my symptoms have deteriorated again and I am back on fluoxetine. The initial symptoms were awful, headaches and tired especially. These are easing though. Just tinnitus, that is works with my depression, that I had before, remains. Fingers crossed that goes soon.

I was prescribed them and started at half a 50mg tablet going up 50 every two weeks until I reach 100mg.

The first two weeks were great but as i increased the dose I felt like the medicine was going past my problem and taking me somewhere else if that makes any sense?

I made the decision myself to go back down to the initial 25mg dose and it works wonders for me - almost like micro-dosing - and I didn't bother to tell my gp cos a packet of 100mg tablets lasts me four months cos I cut them into 4.

On this dose for me the side effects are pretty much nonexistant.

I've been on sertraline and other SSRIs for over 20 years. The initial side effects should settle may be worth taking at night to begin with so effects aren't as strong.

As above it can be trial and error for which works for you but these I've been on longest with the most success and no side effects after initial few months. Though having had a break getting effects again this time.

I was on sertraline. Put on weight, no sex drive, headaches. Try 2 more drugs before I found one that worked. There are so many different types and you may need to try a few before you find the one for you.

It sounds like the medication has a short half life. Venlafaxine is the same.

Been on them since October, initially they caused quite rapid diarrhea after about 6-8 weeks it's settled down, been "trouble free" for a couple of weeks now, made a real difference to me, and my outlook in fairness, probably gonna stay on them for another 12 months or so, moving into my own place in the next few months (marriage breakdown) do feel a bit "wizzy" at times, which I like, and can be a bit frantic but with taking these and a few other things I've been doing I'm all good. I take them in the morning after breakfast as they can bring on insomnia, although I do wake about 4-5am each day but positives outweigh the negatives for me x

Antidepressants were a life raft to keep my head above water in the worst times.

However, the side effects from a number of different medications at different dosages, in conjunction with the physical manifestations of ill mental health are extensive.

Vivid nightmares, nocturnal bruxism (ended up breaking a tooth), sexual dysfunction, hemiplegic headaches, occipital neuralgia due to increase muscle tension and catatonic states, nausea, loss of appetite, altered concentration, poor memory, poor nail health, etc.

The list goes on and on.

Communicate any symptoms you have with your GP or mental health coordinator if you have one.

My meds were sertraline, Citalopram, metazapine, lorazepam, diazepam and quetiapine

One side effect I've found from taking any antidepressant is either lack of sex drive or the inability to climax. That is ok for a while as you can last for hours but does get tiresome and can affect your mental health even more.

Currently taking in the morning and get headaches and tiredness in the day. Thinking of taking it at and seeing if it helps. Only just over 2 weeks on Fluoxetine, so it may ease.

Been on them about a year now, all symptoms re meds dissipate after a short time, these aren’t great if you like a drink as they don’t agree with it

I found the a great help to be fair, nearly came off them at one point as I thought I was doing ok but decided to stick with them

It’s a widely prescribed drug now and there will always be pros and cons to any anti depressant but even if they act as a placebo and they help they are worth sticking with x "

"As an alternative, try lifestyle change.

Plenty of fresh air and exercise, eat well not crap food.

Only listen to comedy, never the news and laugh your tits off as often as you can.

Just a thought."

Mild depression can be quashed with positive strategies.

Also, what was everyone else's experience with this medication? "

Im on week 8 now side effects were bad for the first week but gone by week 4

Hi great to see lots of responses.

I’ve a big step to make as I feel my Venlafaxine isn’t working anymore. My worry is I’ve been told / heard it’s really nasty to come off.

I've been on 50mg since October and after initially taking them at night, then realised they can cause insomnia, quickly changed to a morning after breakfast. I too had some emergency poo problems (not much notice....) which settled down after 3-4 weeks, occasionally it can still happen after a "fasting day" but been pretty good for over a month now. I feel a million % better which i think is a combination of several things, accepting my marriage was over, owning my own part in it (drifted apart) seeing a CBT therapist and going to a man's club each Monday where I just get shit off my chest, and more importantly out of my thoughts!! Spoke to the doc last week and I may look to come off them in August but also not rushing as hopefully I'll have moved into my new place and need to get used to my new life so may stay on until this time next year. They seem to work for me, but it's each to their own x

Suggest looking at plant medicine...Kambo, Ayahuasca, Mushrooms and Bufo. Pharma covers up the symptoms, plant medicine cures em...

Taper it off very slowly. Don't just quit it.
