Where the flamboyance of flamingos live |
Another one, I keep getting them it can be a common problem when going through the menopause. This is my second infection this year! And no cranberry juice doesn’t work apparently I’d have to drinks gallons for it to make a difference and I really need something that helps me to stop getting them in the first place.
Any advice gratefully received, a totally fed up flamingo x |

When do you get them? A few days after sex?
You can get powders which can get rid of them but these can take a few days.
Otherwise to stop them these might help, always wipe front to back, always stay hydrated, and have a wee straight before and after sex if that's possible. |

Obviously I can’t comment re the menopause and its impact, that said, regular UTI’s are “often a sign of something else”, I’m quoting an Endocrinologist who I’ve recently spent time with.
As a bloke, UTI’s are really uncommon and different to female reoccurrence, but mine just wouldn’t go away; eventually a Plastic Surgeon friend dragged me to his Endocrinologist colleague and it’s a game changer.
You’ll need detailed urine and kidney function tests to establish your eGFR and if CKD symptoms are present.
Don’t panic when you google these terms, all adults lose eGFR at a rate of circa -1 per year; mine is 91 which signals early onset CKD and I shit myself with fear; that said, I could have had poorly performing kidneys all of my life, nobody knows!
My root cause was lack of fluids given I now live in predominantly hot countries and constantly sweating day and night, even in air conditioned spaces; I’m on four litres a day now and all good.
Appreciate UK based GP’s that will lead you to an Endocrinologist are rare as hens teeth and cost of the latter maybe eye watering but don’t suffer in silence and say no to constant antibiotics or ridiculous cranberry juice wives tales; most cranberry juice is sugar anyways, you’d need supplements, which also aren’t cheap.
PM if you want me to bore you with more, otherwise, good luck and keep pushing for the answer! |

Try barley squashes. Reputedly the bacteria attaches to the barley when you wee.
Increase your fluids. It helps to flush out the bladder.
During peri-menopause, the reducing oestrogen plays havoc with your immune system. Once it settles, so does your immune system. For me it was recurrent BV (and being allergic to metronidazole was a pain).
It's shit being a woman at times - and this is one of those times, but you're going through it at a time when there is an increase in help. Do seek it out. |

I told a eurologist once that whenever I’m working in Manila I often get UTI’s this makes lots of sense |

When it comes to UTI gps only really want to treat the symptoms rather than find out the cause
Have you been prescribed topical estrogen?
Other than that all I can suggest is ask you doc for a referral to a specialist. |

The term 'itis' has two meanings, infection and inflammation.
Have you had this checked out? Once you've worked out what the culprit is.
As a man who has had bladder-itis, this seemed wierd to my GP as to why. What urologists don't do is think holistically. It's not just what's happening to the GUM area, it's what's happening next door. The bowels. I don't just mean the poor hygiene of women wiping bottom first, I'm talking IBS, as this inflammation of the lower digestive tract has been linked affecting the bladder.
This spillover is poorly researched as urologists don't as about IBS because that's a proctologist's job. I am speaking from experience here.
Think about how fear affects the bladder and bowels. This mental urge is to release the contents due to fear is in common parlance: to shit oneself or wet your pants because the car nearly went of that steep mountain road, is a prime example of how stress can ruin your day and undies.
The shared nerve pathways come into play here.
We need to get into the habit of asking if one illness/condition is triggering another one. Think holistically, think smarter.

Itis = inflammation. Then you look at the cause, which is often an infection, but not always.
You're correct in stating the interconnectedness of bodily systems. |

I wished I could tell my urologist this, but I can't be arsed waiting 8 weeks for a written letter to travel 20 odd miles or 4 years for a face to face chat.
She's never heard of email BTW. |

Ask your Doc about Vagifem or equivalent... It's amazing for recurrent UTIs in peri/meno among other things x |

Antibiotics are treating the cause - pathogen induced infection. |

Recently had a uti turn to sepsis so I feel your pain literally! Try and avoid carbonated drinks and drink plain water and plenty of it, shouldn’t be using scented soap down there either, I’m so paranoid now that I’m ocd before and after sex showering/washing straightaway and only use water based lube if needed |

Fizzy drinks, they are the problem, I suspect someone in the factory is peeing in the in drink at manufacturing.
Fizzy drinks have been in the news a couple of times in the news over the past year. Too much Benzyne in the process was was problem too.
I drank some lemonade back in 2000, ended up in hospital with a bad uti. Bad constipation too exacerbated it probably caused by dehydration as the uti kept me peeing constantly, then kidney stones, a vicious cycle. Ended up with an endoscopy up the front, ouch.
Keep off chocolate and sugar and salt and bread.
Rennie tablets helped too.

The pathogen isn't the cause that's why millions of women keep getting them, if there were no damaged cells for the pathogens to feed on there would be no infection, people on ketogenic diets rarely get infections compared with people on high carb diets |

Cranberry juice with not help once you have an infection but taking daily cranberry supplements will help prevent you getting them apparently. |

You're impossible, you just suggested barley squash! Your arrogant narrow mindedness is absolutely terrifying you shouldn't be giving out medical advice to people and I'm not going to be interacting with you anymore. |

Registered health care professional that’s spent the last 2 years working in primary care and seeing frequent UTI’s.
1. Low oestrogen could be the issue if urine dips are coming back negative
2. If they’re not being sent for cultures to identify resistance/sensitivities, then often the 3 day course of trimethoprim/nitrofurantoin won’t clear it, hence the recurrent nature
3. As said, peeing before and after sex, showering as soon after as possible and good bathroom hygiene
4. Underwear choice and fabrics can have an impact
5. Plenty of fluids
6. A urinary supplement containing both cranberry and d-mannose is meant to be beneficial
7. Some medications can cause urinary symptoms of urine dips are always negative or not showing a combination of nitrates, protein and leukocytes (usually with +/- blood and ketones) or are showing microscopic traces and culture aren’t showing any real infection
Azo is a good brand that I use when needed (I had kidney sepsis in 2019 and have had recurrent kidney infections and UTI’s since - last one was AGONY and defo the worst I’d had since having sepsis!)
Hope that helps! |

Thank you for your opinion and not responding to a simple question. It's obvious you don't know what you're talking about.
As a HCP I can say a good diet is essential to good health. |

Hi P.F. Are you self diagnosed?
It's best to get the doctor to send off a sample so that they can identify and treat accordingly.
Self diagnoses often leads to treating something that you don't actually have.
Good luck xx |

I went to my GP and hospital for years and they done all sorts of tests and ultrasound scans and we're absolutely useless they messed up my gut with too many antibiotics and I was forced to go down more natural holistic routes and I have written down over 20 issues that have resolved since changing my diet. I know that decent doctors do exist but most of them just read, remember and regurgitate textbooks and never think outside the box or question anything which isn't intelligent or helpful, the kind of doctors who were telling people to smoke tobacco not long ago to clear the lungs and not much has changed they're just pushing different drugs now. Taking charge of your own health and realising how simple most conditions are is very empowering and while certain drugs may save a life during an emergency no one should be settling for taking vast amounts of drugs regularly when often there's a ridiculously simple solution |
