Random question but is anyone suffering with stuffed ears and people sound muffled?

I have tried allsorts to rectify this but it’s really pissing me off now

Any suggestions would be really helpful.

I’ve had a cough on and off for 9 weeks and had allsorts from docs but am now left with this fucking ear problem

The olive oil is a top suggestion, that’s worked for me in the past.

Also try closing your mouth, holding your nose closed and breath down your nose. It’ll create a vacuum and (fingers crossed) you’ll feel your ears pop, hopefully that’ll help

Slightly warm olive oil, failing that I find the best solution is otex eardrops from the chemist, always worked for me . My ears used to block every three or four months.

I generally find that having a stuffy nose also meant that my hearing is a bit wooly too. I assume it's a pressure related thing.

If there's no wax or blockage in the outer ear, it could be mucus or fluid, and/or inflammation in the middle ear/ eustachian tube between ear, nose & mouth. I find antihistamines, hot compress on face/sinuses followed by Saline rinsing the nose helps.

Op be careful, you might have a reversed ear drum.... Be very gentle with it. This can be caused by many reason specially after a cold, sinuses infection.... Maybe go see an ear specialist

(Healthcare worker here), obviously discuss with your pharmacist first, but this good advise, but a decongestant rather than an antihistamine may work more efficiently- (not suitable if on Blood Pressure medication)

I’ve had a cough for ages.. had dizzy spells every now and then too. Went to have my ears checked and ended up having microsuction wax removal as one ear was completely blocked and one was the best.

Seem to have come a down with another cold/cough since but hearing is spot on and feeling better for it.

Worth seeing if there’s anywhere near you that can do it / check. £60 ish for both seems to be the going rate.

I went for an ENT consultation recently because I’ve had this exact problem and it’s been getting worse.

He gave them a good clean said I had an ear infection caused by trapped water from swimming behind a load of wax. He said the air was completely filled with hard wax so he blasted it all out.

Couldn’t believe how loud everything became after having them cleaned

He also gave me a nasal spray to use daily he said it will keep my ears working properly and they said try and keep your weight the same losing or gaining weight can cause ear problems

I've had that problem in the past with colds and coughs affecting my hearing that won't go away.

Tried several ways to clear it too from a bit of heavy chewing to moving the jaw sideways to make it crackle, to one stream of water from the shower head to warm it up (thou it can be noisy) to sneezing trying to get it to flex a little and pop, but nine times out of ten it goes when it wants.

Hope it soon pops for you

for some reason, my right ear is prone to wax build-up - I have no idea why, but suspect it's connected to an impacted wisdom tooth that was extracted years ago.

So, every year, I would trot down to the GP, he would give me drops to use for a week, and then call me back to have them syringed.

Pain in the backside being deaf for a week, so nowadays I syringe my own ears using a kit I bought off Amazon.

Apparently I'm doing it wrong, but it works for me so I don't care.

Beware anti inflammatory medications if you have infection. The inflammation is your bodies way of fighting the infection, delivering heat and immune mechanisms in the blood. Anti inflammatory medications like ibrupofen and paracetamol switch off these defences and can be the cause of sepsis.

This is true, well proven, but not widely known.

Your GP may not even know it yet.

You can self refer to ENT. It was worth it in my case saved a lot of faffing around, the ENT consultant can do audiology, clear wax from your ears prescribed strong nasal sprays, advise you how to equalise the pressure, tell you the pros and cons of installing grommets all in a 15 minute appointment for less than £200

Hope it clears up for you though..

Paracetamol is antipyrexial.

The idea is that these meds allow the body's natural inflammatory reaction without going overboard.

Streuth, I thought it was just me that had this bastard thing going on, sinuses are stuffed, coughing up phlegm, nose bunged, then my ears went and got bunged up to.

I used otex about 4 times a day, and also mental Chrystal’s, and radox eucalyptus

I also have one of those ear camera pen things, I used that to scoop out a LOT of wax, don’t get me wrong here…I do clean my ears regularly and never had an issue with them before.

But this past week has been absolute torture.

Got an appointment for doctors today, I think it’s a chest infection I have, still no sign of the bugger leaving me after almost 2 weeks

Could be a number of issues

Possibly wax build up

Possibly infection

Infection could be inner or outer ear. Inner ear infections can often be misdiagnosed as outer ones as you symptoms are similar

I had blocked ear twice months ago that was misdiagnosed for nine months at an outer ear problem. Strong course of antibiotics eventually fixed it

If your current problem persists, see chemist first, then doctor and make sure they have a good look at inner and otter ear

I suffer with inner ear infections and sinus issues - my goto is to take the proper Pseudoephedrine decongestants - it will open up sinus / canals. Ask your pharmacist for it.

Don’t bother with any decongestants which have phenylephrine - it’s been proven no better than a placebo.

Warm olive oil 1x or 2x a day for 5 days then if you have a decent powerful stream on your shower aim at ear from elbow length away and gradually bring it closer to ear with head tilted in opposite direction and if your lucky wax will move. If not specsavers can vacuum it out but it’s less successful.

I often noticed my ears popping when driving uphill and my ears would pop at the same point every time. So. what about driving somewhere hilly and see if that works for you. Failing that, going on a train that uses tunnels could have a similar effect.

"Read back luv as I keep mentioning I’m all sorted now so no hilly drives for me "

That's good to know, but this thread might be useful to someone else in the future.

Ear calm (mild antibiotic)from the pharmacist, if it doesn’t clear in 5 days, go to the Dr for a stronger version

"If there's no wax or blockage in the outer ear, it could be mucus or fluid, and/or inflammation in the middle ear/ eustachian tube between ear, nose & mouth. I find antihistamines, hot compress on face/sinuses followed by Saline rinsing the nose helps.

Finally someone with good advice……not tried the hot compress but will tonight…thank you xxxx"

Gonna try this myself to...

"Have these at the moment but came down with sore throat cough and cold 2 days before Xmas everything sounds muffled it's horrible

I use a bit of warm olive oil it seems to work well "

I had exactly the same symptoms as you. Turned out it was covid and I had developed an ear infection. Lasted weeks before a correct diagnosis. Hope you will feel better soon.

Portstewart

Not sure if you still have your issue op but a nice warm bath with your heard slightly below the water past your ears and soak for a while might help either dislodge what's there or might make it move

Don't know about all these olive oil suggestions... I ended up with a nasty ear infection that li gered after other symptoms were gone. Twas horrendous... was like my ear would occasionally blow off wind too. I had to get another antibiotic.

Popped into this. Registered medical professional here!

With colds/flu, it’s really common to get Eustachian tube dysfunction with it. It’s basically swelling and blockage of the ET’s that help drain out the sinus congestion. Causes muffled hearing, blocked ears, tinnitus, dizziness…

Quickest way to clear it is with a nasal steroid spray from the pharmacy (Beconase), aim it out to the ears when using it. Decongestants only (without paracetamol if you aren’t in pain). Chewing gum and doing the divers blow, then antihistamines. Can take 6 weeks to fully settle. If the issue isn’t in the canal itself, ear drops will do nothing for it unfortunately.

Just in case anyone needs this in future!
