There’s a FB page Menopause Warriors which is really helpful. You can get HRT when you’re peri. Hot flushes are not the only symptom. Testosterone can improve your libido.

I've been on hrt for a few years now and it certainly helps me with my symptoms ( hot flushes, mood swings) but my sex drive took a dive, but my husband's has too so there was no pressure . I started taking testosterone after I went to see my doc it does help a bit but my sex drive is nowhere near where it used to be,we don't really have the desire for meets now.not sure what the answer is

Get on hrt as soon as possible, I put up with peri for about 6 years, was miserable, feel myself again on hrt. Don’t let them fob you off with anti depressants either. Good luck OP

There’s a great group on FB called U.K HRT and menopause support group, it’s dead friendly

Menopause (and peri) is high on the agenda here NOW. I suffered for 11 years before this and the help was shoddy.

Doctors should know that declining oestrogen (mainly) and progesterone causes symptoms before cessation of menses. NOT just at the point of cessation.

Mrs N found out she had underactive Thyroid, since taking medicine for it has much improved Libido and has lost weight and gained a lot of her old confidence back. Such a relief to have found out why he weight ballooned and libido went south.

so it's not necessarily HRT needed.

OP, you definitely need a different doctor, one who specialises in women's health if you can. I guess I was really lucky, went to see a GP about a year or so ago as I was getting very sore breasts and my libido was non-existent (no hot flushes). I was given pelvic exam and sent for blood tests, as well as given a website link, Menopause Matters, to have a look at. And even though my blood tests came back borderline, I was offered HRT. No more painful breasts since, but my libido comes and goes.

I think still way too many doctors think you can't be going through menopause if you're not having hot flushes, yet there are so many different symptoms and not every single woman would experience all of them.

Also, my partner found a stick similar to pregnancy test in Poundland yesterday - to test levels of FSH, to detect the onset of menopause. No idea if it's just yet another gimmick or if it works. But at least menopause is no longer a taboo subject.

Good luck, OP!

I have been totally gaslighted by my GP surgery over the past 2 years, even after asking to see a female doctor and someone with menopause training. Went as far as having a painful uterus biopsy to jump through their hoops and still Nothing so I gave up. I have tried all manner of holistic things for the past year to help but my symptoms are getting worse/increasing so I’m mentally gearing myself up to go back and put my foot down.

If so does it help?

What is it called?

Male Dr took MJ off HRT and put her on anti depressents, still don't know why to this day...

Reading this makes me think I was right to say go back and get more advice, would never trust a male Dr to make these decisions

Yeah peri here, been on HRT last 2 years and back to myself thankfully!

Advice would be get a new Dr or request the Menopause clinic in your area.

They cant deny you HRT if you are having symptoms. Not everyone gets the same symptoms.

The worse symptom for me that I am still trying to get the HRT right is for the brain fog!!!

Follow Davina McCall or Louise Newton the menopause dr and check out balance menopause also for lots of good advice not just HRT can help theres loads of wee things you can do to help.

Nutriton Geeks 3 in 1 magnesium gylcinate has been a game changer for a good sleep for myself.

I was diagnosed with an under active thyroid whilst in what seemed to be perimenopause. My GP practice was great. They wanted to deal with the thyroid problem first, as the symptoms can be similar. It helped but only so much, so went on HRT too, which sorted my hot flushes and the terrible brain fog. Weight has also stabilised.

Getting good medical support is so important. My practice has a prescribing nurse who specialises in womens health.

If needs be, change practice.

The magnesium theres so many different ones, its important theres glycinate in it, the 3 in 1 gives me a nice deep sleep, always wake up refreshed from taking it. Best of luck with your Dr. Change GP if you have to!

Go ask for a copy of your blood results. You may find oestrogen and progesterone in range, but they may not be in balance with each other. I had oestrogen dominance. You can get progesterone dominance.

I think this might give you reason to stick to your guns and get a proper diagnosis.

In 1982 I was diagnosed with exercised induced asthma.

In 2014 dust allergy was finally tested for, no surprise there.

None of the various inhalers or tablets worked. So after 30 or so years and several gp surgeries later I finally got an appointment with an asthma nurse. So armed with a print out from STRAVA, with my VO2 max numbers, and other stats this resulted with the following answer "it's not asthma"

So finally I was seen by a physio and stress tested..She was right, turns out the reasons I can breathe and run are due to

A bent septum operated on in 21018

A dust allergy

A leaky stomach valve/GERD/longterm heartburn

and something called dysfunctional breathing

So with a healthy heart rate I should be fit, but my breathing was 24 breaths per minute, not 12!

So the moral of this story is keep nagging and don't ever give up. Speak to pharmacists and start logging details, as doctors love stats, as they are something they can understand. Recording body temperatures, times per night waking up and days spent bleeding/spotting or period free will bolster your evidence.

I've been prescribed hrt simply because of my age, but I'm not taking it yet as I don't feel like I'm suffering from any symptoms except a hot flush now and then. My sex drive is still extremely high and I'm definitely not "dry". It's handy to know I have a stock of it if needed but surprised women are being denied treatment when they are obviously symptomatic yet I pretty much had it "forced' on me when I turned 50 without even asking for it.

I forgot to take my magnesium till really late tonight (dammit brain fog) though even if its a short sleep it's a deep sleep and I wake up refreshed. Wish someone told me years ago!

If anyone knows anything to sort the brain fog it would be appreciated, it's the only thing that bothers me.

I'll keep this as short as I can! Lol us women know our bodies. Approx 2 years ago my periods changed, I was sweating when my now ex and son were freezing, along with other things, I went to my GP, a FEMALE, she told me I was too young, after an internal examination, she referred me to the gynecologist, I spoke to her, told her all my symptoms and she put a referral back to my GP to give me HRT. I'm now on patches and they have helped in some ways. DO NOT let them fob you off!! As far as my sex drive I think I'm hornier than ever, so can't advise on that side. Good luck and keep pushing with your GP!! X

The problem with bloods is they can take them at (for example) the start of the month, and the levels can be totally different a week later, you're not too young, go back and don't let them fob you off. You know your body and know something isn't right? X

Second this. There is a lot of evidence that starting to boost Estrogen in Peri is very helpful to stop life changing symptoms like Brain Fog and sleep problems.

As soon as you suspect symptoms (loss of libido is one) then you can ask for low dose Estrogen. They are a small patch on your hip. You can hardly see them. You can also get a gel to rub on your arms or a vaginal pessary but I think that's mostly to help with dryness.

There's some really good info online. At the very least watch an interview between Dr Louise Newson and Davina McCall.

Menopause can be bloody horrible I still have the occasional period but I'm on hrt patches and tablets I would advise anyone who suspects there menopausal keep on at the doctors I had to see 4 different ones before I could get anywhere also register on the nhs patient site that way you can access copies of all you medical appointments and tests you have had really does help to see what's going on I have to have blood test every 2 to 4 weeks as menopause has triggered a couple of other serious health issues so please ladies really push your doctors to act on your concerns

I wasn't having periods due to having a coil fitted so I wouldn't know and still don't know if they've ended. I still have the Merina coil.

My main symptoms were lower leg pain like restless legs. Insomnia, a higher than usual Libido and one that's nearly destroyed my small business - Brain Fog. I thought I might have ADHD. I went to my doc for assessment and she said you were here a year ago complaining about lack of clarity in thought and low mood. She had offered me HRT then as well and I refused it a year eatlier.

I went on to it about three months ago. I am shocked at the turn around. The lower leg pain went away immediately. The sleeping improved a bit, the brain fog lifted a bit and my libido normalised. I went back and scaled up to next strength of Estrogen (Evorel 50). I have much better sleep and the Brain Fog is nearly but not quite gone.

Since then I got a Vaginal Pessary as well which is a tiny tablet put in with what looks like a skinny tampon applicator. I do this three nights a week. I was worried it would change the taste of me (I love oral) but no comments so far.

Do your research. Ask your GP for their leaflets and info. If they have lots on hand, chances are they'll have a 40 or 50 something year old womb owner on their roster who knows the score

Oh what a helpful topic, Shywife and I created our account with a view to having adventures and excitement, unfortunately Menopause has got, or changed from Peri-M her libido has disappeared, she has started to resent me for no reason ! She is on patches/gel.

She has said I can venture out and explore without her, this feels wrong but the longer we go on like this the more tempted I become ? Advice would be good.

I’m kind sensitive, caring, however currently a bit depressed and suffering CPTSD trying really hard but fick it’s tough ! I’m lonely horny and depressed wtf !!!! I’m actually good company, charming funny and witty.

Should I make a single account t to explore ? Or is that weird ?

My ex entered perimenopause in her early thirties and lost all libido. There are some great forums out there with women who's knowledge on the subject is incredible. Sadly, doctors aren't always great and we had a few issues getting any help initially. Self education has helped her an awful lot, along with changes to diet and exercise.

"Does anyone else suffer with a hormone imbalance that affects their libido?

I still get the regular periods, but from the end of my period to ovulation I am like a nympho. As soon as I ovulate, I just don't care."

Sounds normal, your body telling you to fuck to procreate, then withdrawing the need.

During my 11 years of perimenopause, right up to the last 4 years, I craved sex. I think my body was telling me it was last chance saloon for procreation.

Definitely not qualified to offer advice here, but want to show solidarity and an allies approach as this is a really tough stage! Won’t last forever though so hope people can be understanding and supportive during that transition. Now I’ll shut up and let people with knowledge help with the actual question. Take are all

Average doctors just love to somehow forget that we have about 25 sex hormones in our bodies in varying proportions with mainly testosterone and oestradiol.

How, in 2024, men with low T are not treated properly for what is a metabolic crisis of failure to keep muscle size, bone density, health glucose and insulin profiles, a less depressive state, is beyond sanity.

Same for women with peri/menopause oestradiol/estriol is essential for delicate tissue lubricity and thickness... bone density.

Go private if you can and get it correctly tweaked (your hormones!!)

Book an appointment in advance, tell them it’s for a menopause check up. Look up NICE menopause guidelines, list as many of your symptoms as possible at the appointment, do not except anti depressants, be firm, they honestly try to avoid giving it to you unless you demand it

"Mrs N found out she had underactive Thyroid, since taking medicine for it has much improved Libido and has lost weight and gained a lot of her old confidence back. Such a relief to have found out why he weight ballooned and libido went south.

so it's not necessarily HRT needed.

I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid about 10 years ago and then recently peri menopausal, there can be connections, but in my case the HRT has definitely improved things. Totally get what you're saying though "

Yes indeed. One thing at a time. Obviously this diagnosis has improved our lives a lot and who knows what is ahead but it's provided some relief for now. What the GP said is try this for 6 months and let's see what dosage you need. After 6 months it was upped slightly and that's when the real improvement occurred. It is a matter of finding the right level and once you are taking this medication it's a rest of life thing.

Mrs N is of the opinion that HRT might help further. We'll see eh.

Went into a shop last week and ended up talking to a woman assistant for 20 minutes about personal things. She disclosed a long period of undiagnosed hyperthyroid that made her body like the tropics and also went into perimenopause at the same time... Jesus christ. Lazy, dismissive doctors and consultants check boxing were in abundance

Although I have untouched HRT sitting on my kitchen counter, I’m not on HRT because I found by the trial and error that concoction of supplements works well for me, including hot flushes, which I found Evening Primrose Oil works great. Maybe try it, and even if it doesn’t help, it’s also a good source of Omega 6 so probably worth taking anyway.

Like all the ladies on this thread, HRT is definitely the way to go.

Read Davinas book Menopausing, it’s ace and will make you cry with relief.

Also ask to see a menopause specialist at your surgery. Not everyone gets hot sweats!

Good luck xx

It's probably worth looking at medical data for the active components of EPO, then you may know better, if there are even more effective products out there.

"OP, you definitely need a different doctor, one who specialises in women's health if you can.

Good luck, OP!"

It's a gimmick. Symptoms are by far the best to way to know or not.

"Male Dr took MJ off HRT and put her on anti depressents, still don't know why to this day...

Reading this makes me think I was right to say go back and get more advice, would never trust a male Dr to make these decisions

Petr"

The gender of the GP is irrelevant- if they know their stuff that's the main thing. And a lot of younger female GPs will very quickly dismiss women re. Menopause, which is baffling.

The nurse is right, everyone's hormones fluctuate all the time so a test only determines that time on that day. Stress reduces Estrogen as well. Brain Fog can massively affect your quality of life, dont dismiss it as being a lightweight symptom.

Start Estrogen low dose and scale up, at some point you will feel 'like yourself' again. That's how you know which dose is best.

I started on Evorel 25 and now up to 50.

My small business was on the brink of collapse. Now I can think again.

Changing GPs really isn't that simple anymore. GPs in my area won't take you if you're already registered with one in the area as they don't have enough space as it is.

I’ve been struggling with peri symptoms I remember how awful hot flushes felt it just came out of the blue. At this time my period was still coming but very irregular, my current cycle is 42 days late. Not had any hot flushes for a few months now and my libido is at an all time low.

I don’t agree with this belief you only get put on HRT after a year of no periods. The amount of us ladies struggling some sadly with suicidal thoughts the GP’s need more training especially male ones. I’m currently taking Magnesium Glycinate to help with relaxation and sleep. I also take glucosamine to help with my osteoarthritis which I’ve struggled with and all the GP offers is pain pills it’s ridiculous. Good luck OP hope you get the help you need. To all of you best of luck xxx

Make sure you look at NICE guidelines on prescribing HRT. From memory it should be prescribed from symptoms alone after the age of 45. There are some good checklists out there that you can use (I have one) that makes it easier when you go to the doctor. So all your symptoms are there in front of your face. Brain fog usually kicks in at the worst times!

All the ablation does is stop/lighten periods, it won't have any affect on menopause because that's hormones.

And you can have very few outward symptoms and still be in menopause - you're never out of it.

But it's things like bone density, mental health etc that you might not be aware of which we need to protect against.

If you go to a private clinic, they will give you hrt and trt as long as your blood work is OK for it..

NHS are rubbish when it comes to hormones, unfortunately.

Your best work is to get a full blood panel if you can by nhs but if not private you want all your hormones included including testosterone and e2 unfortunately these are major hormones in Menopause and others but they seem to neglect it in blood tests.

Only down side with private is it can be a tad expensive to stsrt of with but there are more options and I don't think the NHS give testosterone to women I no there's not many doctors who will where private will..

Alot of women will get there sex drive back with hrt but doesn't always happen once they get testosterone in the mix it normally goes straight up.

My lady started HRT about 15 years ago following hot flushes etc.

It’s made a huge difference to her, not only does her skin look 10 years younger than contemporaries, she has tremendous stamina and as as stated on a recent verification ‘is dynamite in bed’

She’s well aware of potential dangers but gets yearly mamogram and gyno. checkups (after she told her doctor that she swings)

She takes her HRT as a cream to rub on her leg each morning.

On a separate note I was given two shots of testosterone by a friend on our recent trip to America.

It seems quite common there for doctors to prescribe self medicating it to increase male libido.

My mate has two shots administered by his wife each week and judging by his sexual stamina it certainly appears to work.

I too found it very effective in all four parties we attended there.
