Hey everyone,

Wondered if any of you had the HPV vaccine in your 20s or beyond?

Just seen that HPV vaccine is available for people up to the age of 45. What are your thoughts? Worth doing surely if you’ve had few sexual partners before starting something *ahem* new

The HPV vaccine is an astonishingly effective piece of medical science. It has pretty much eradicated HPV amongst younger age groups.

I'm too old to have it, but if it were made available for folks in their 50s I'd be in the queue in a flash.

Another vaccine saving lives.

So glad to hear your thoughts are the same as mine. I mentioned it to someone here a week or so ago since their profile said they were looking for clean / safe sex with someone serious, not to mess them about etc etc so in my response I mentioned the whole hpv thing and that it’s on the cards for us but got no reply from them. I started thinking I was being OTT with safe sex and that I totally put them off lol

I think it should be given to anyone at any age as even if you’ve had multiple partners, it doesn’t mean you’ve got x/y/z hpvs, just a higher chance but then it stops you from getting the hpvs you don’t already have so totally worth it, in my opinion.

Ok, ramble over ha! 😊

About a decade ago, in my mid 30s, when I told my quack I was exploring my bisexuality, he punted me down to the local clinic where they were happy to apply a bunch of vaccinations, including a course of Gardisil (HPV) for gentlemen who enjoy other gentleman and might have missed it during school days.

I'd reccommend a quick call to your local clinic (search for "icash" here in Norfolk) to see if they still offer that program (austerity may have starved them), as Gardisil is relatively pricey otherwise.

(While I wouldn't say deceit is advisable, you may have to claim you're a man having sex with men to qualify.)

I would definitely have it given the chance. My daughters both had it in school

Ha! yes! I’d thought of icash. Funny that it was more geard towards men than women only 10 years ago as the hpv vaccine started here for girls only but now boys are getting it too as they’ve seen the benefits. They just seem to put a cap on it (I think up to 16 is free 🤷‍♀️) it appears you really have to search to get it done after that’s age and I think you’re right, not cheap for a vaccine - £180 each I think 🤔

It may have broader benefits and effectiveness than you think, when above the initial cut off age. It may help even when we've already got infected and may lessen disease progression extent. It could be worth looking around for somewhere that may prescribe it privately.

My head and neck cancer last year was driven by HPV.

Needed surgery, chemo and radiotherapy, it was brutal.

I would absolutely recommend parents to at least discuss vaccine with their GP.

Nudge them anyway; they're practical, unshockable folk who've pretty much seen it all.

To be honest - if they can't help you I'd suggest forking out the £360 if you can.

It'll sting, but if you're starting a new "hobby" it might well be worth the price to participate with less on your mind.

Oh, I'm wildly extravagant when it comes to sex. I absolutely paid for private testing for like 40-plus strains, and then the vaccine (as I was negative for all including the four or so it covers - numbers approximate, it was yrs ago!) soon after it was licensed in the UK.

But don't underestimate how effective male, and particularly female, condoms are. Yes, other transmission happens, but given my age and lifestyle it was considered surprising I had no strains

3 doses may be recommended for some people, depending on age

.

I'm not too sure but I think it's free up to the age of 25. I paid for mine, the Dr tried to put me off the idea saying it was a waste of time and money, but I was happy to pay for the peace of mind it gave me

I had to lie to get it.

They said i didn't qualify because I had been in a monogamous relationship for the last 14 years, so I had to fib and tell them I'm an absolute filthy slag.

I was vaxxed before I left the room!

I was just out of the upper age range when the vaccine started.

I'm definitely going to investigate getting it privately

Most people over 30 already carry HPV virus which is why they don’t tend to vaccinate people who are already sexually active.

It would probably be pointless for most on here!! lol.

It’s great that for the younger people it’s available and will eradicate the virus over time.
