Hi ladies, i just started using oestrogel (2 pumps) and taking a tablet at night for menopause (hoping it helps my bones + arthritis) I'm only about 15 days in
This morning I noticed that my nipples were sore and red, and appeared a little weepy.. Tonight my boobs are extremely sore and very painful.. The nipples are uber sore /sensitive (they are normally like leather!)
Is this normal?? Do i just need to power through?? I was given three months as a trial |

It is common to have initial side effects such as breast tenderness. This can happen with both O and P. Can I ask what med you are taking at night? The only part I'm not sure about is the weepiness from nipples, is there actually fluid leaking or is it just sensation? Xx |

Some breast tenderness is pretty usual as things settle , but fluid leaking from the nipple , defo talk to your GP about that x |

I can only congratulate you that you took a step and decided to go for the treatment.
Kama is still on “no” because of the cancer risk. |

"I would recommend ringing your GP if you are having painful side effects. Not to worry, but I think only a doctor will be able to determine if there's a problem "
Thanks - I'm away all next week with work, so if it's worse I'll give them a call when I'm back. |

I'll look at the packet and report back.
So it's more that they look different.. Puffier and red and sore - not actual openly weeping... But glistening slightly.... |

There's no fluid, just glistening /puffy.
I'll monitor the tenderness... I've never experienced anything like it before |

I'm sorry to hear that, but definitely right to avoid if there is any risk.
My Dr's consult was less than 5 mins and she rang me after the appointment whilst I was driving to say she'd given me the wrong advice / prescription and was planning to change it, so that was a little unsettling. The chemist had to advise on how to use it.
There are many natural remedies that might be worth your wife exploring? Holland and Barratt have specially trained staff in some shops.
I'm fortunate as I don't have severe menopause symptoms, but i do have painful arthritis in my hands and have read that HRT can ease those symptoms...but I guess for every positive improvement there is a potential consequence. |

Hi, f here. I think that’s just a settling down phase. The change in hormones to what your body has been used to can cause issues. You don’t say where you were/are on the Menopause path, but if you still have periods - even irregular ones - the new hormones will fight with your own until they settle. I would also suggest that after the first three months you’ll need to up your pumps of gel - I don’t know anyone who is stable on 2.
Having said that, always watch out and ask a doctor if you are concerned. (If you have one that understands these things!!!)
There’s a really good, private, ladies only, fully moderated group on Facebook which was started by a good friend of mine who is an expert in Menopause. Search for “The HRT Truth Collective”. Either read all the previous posts or ask your own question. |

When I changed to the gel from patches, i had sore boobs, it was like they were bruised sore, tender to touch the area, it settled down afterwards. Had no leakage.
Maybe worth speaking to the pharmacist, to see if it's a normal side effect in the 1st few weeks. If not, then contact your gp surgery and see if you can get a telephone appointment. |

"Did you read the leaflet?
Also the BNF is a good source of info for medication. NICE is a good source of info for best practice (so Google NICE and perimenopause)."
Thanks for those, I'll have a Google
I did read all of the leaflets.. It seems to list absolutely everything as a side effect.. I don't want to overreact and pester my doctor if this is 'normal' , but equally I'm sometimes slow to react when maybe i should be taking action!
I'll just continue to monitor... I might actually put a soft tee-shirt under my bra just try to make them feel more comfortable |

Yes that's how mine are - no leakage, just puffy /red
Seems its normal from the various replies and messages |

I use a oestrogen patch and take tablets at bedtime.
I had the same side effects. It lasted less than one month. After the first month, I only had breast tenderness when my period was coming on (a few days before). That lasted for a few months. All the breast related tenderness/puffiness has completely gone away at this point and I’m less than a year into HRT. |

Everyone is different, so you need to find the HRT that works for you.
The first one I tried made me bleed for 3 months but I am now on a dual hormone one, much like the pill. It works great, but I do have a 2 day bleed most months.
I would speak to your GP about the problems. |

It’s always a bit of a transition, and things can definitely get stirred up.
That said, you should definitely consult a GP about it.
The Facebook page above is good, and also The menopause support network.

Oh that's a relief to hear... I'm supposed to take mine none-stop i think, so assume i won't get a 'period' as such.. God i hope not!
I've already seen benefits from taking it |

I struggled to find the fb page, i need to look again.
My Dr didn't talk about any options just said she was prescribing gel (2 pumps daily)..and then tablets were added after I'd left the surgery
The consult didn't fill me with confidence, but i need to go back in 3 months for a review |

Very few GPs know about HRT. I was incredibly lucky. I’m on combined patches as the Utrogestan tablets didn’t agree with me. Took about a year to get the doses and plan sorted so bear with it. Read up on the options and don’t be afraid to ask the GP for what you want. |

I had stopped having periods 2 years before going on HRT. I only decided to give it a try because of severe brain fog and hot flushes. Wish I'd done it sooner.
Our surgery has a prescribing nurse who specialises in menopause and woman specific health issues. She's brilliant. Having good advice makes a big difference. |

"It is common to have initial side effects such as breast tenderness. This can happen with both O and P. Can I ask what med you are taking at night? The only part I'm not sure about is the weepiness from nipples, is there actually fluid leaking or is it just sensation? Xx
I'll look at the packet and report back.

It is: Utrogestan (proestrogen) |

Hi Mids, I was on oestrogen patches and Utrogestan (just had to stop the Utro due to a skin issue) but I never got breast/nipple tenderness/leakage. Like folk say above, speak to GP (if you can).
I'd not had a periods for about 2 yrs when I started, but about 2 months in I forgot to take the Utro one night and 2 weeks later I had the heaviest period I'd ever had in my life. Just to make you aware. Hope you get it all sorted, it's a bloody minefield! X |

2 day periods are well worth it for a fully functional brain and a good night's sleep. |

One week later - all breast tenderness has gone, i feel great
Great news. Just keep an eye on your symptoms (or hopefully lack of) ready to report back at your next review. "
