There are so many variants it is hard to keep up with them all lol, isnt it? But apparently there is a new variant that is called "kraken" I dont know much about it, do you know the meaning of it and the latest of it?
The first data on kraken were reported in the united states, specifically in new york and connecticut last october, they say that the symptoms are very mild. |

"So we have moved from the Greek alphabet to Greek mythology to name variants?"
No. Officially this is still Omicron. The WHO stopped naming variants.
Kraken is a nickname started by a Canadian scientist (in a relevant field etc) called T Ryan Gregory. Because people struggle to keep track via the system without the names.
Kraken is a descendant of Omicron BA2, and is one of many in what's now being termed a variant soup. Less in the way of a monopoly at present, and has been this way for awhile.
Kraken is so named because it seems to be more immune evasive (both vaccines and prior infection) and it seems to bind more easily to ACE2 receptors. I have seen some people say online that it's mild, but... Gets past your body's protection and gets in faster - does that sound mild? |

Oh. Remember when the press said Omicron was a way different variant than any we'd seen before?
Kraken is as different from Omicron as Omicron is from wild type Covid.
But it's still another Omicron apparently *shrug* |

"So we have moved from the Greek alphabet to Greek mythology to name variants?" Yes, it seems that they have changed it to that too. I always wonder why they have to name them after the greek alphabet or mythology now as kraken have nothing in common with this variant. I looked up the synonym of kraken and it means 2 things.
The kraken is a legendary sea monster of enormous size said to appear off the coasts of norway, the other meaning is the loch ness monster.

I wonder if the next variant will be called Gazpacho or Cullen Skink ?"
Haha! So far mythological names seem to be helping those of us still trying to keep track.
The issue with the variant soup is that it maintains a high level of pressure on healthcare services long term. In many countries, since the "soup" situation started (at the end of Omicron BA5 wave last summer) the lows in hospital pressure have been higher than the Delta peak. Healthcare services globally are suffering burnout. |

"Ooops, misread, should put glasses on first.
Thought it was called a 'Karen' variant.
Maybe more apt. "
Difficult decision a 'mild' variant of COVID or a dose of the 'Karen'! Lol (I miss read too)

Has the kraken woke? (see what I did there?) maybe the next is the shaun or dolly or flossy? For all those sheep eh? Seriously shag... The variants and their tracking is available for all to see on ons or UKHSA sites.
Behaviours aren't going to change even of the next variant was a mix of ebola hiv and covid... We'd still be arguing about the fact it's all someone elses fault. |

The informal naming isn't aimed at people who are going to crack on with life regardless. It's for those who want to be aware of the dynamic risk environment and act accordingly. |

If you wish to interpret my factual post as getting my knickers into a twist, be my guest.
I find it strange that certain subcultures view taking medicine as recommended as an insult. It used to be a big man insult when I was about... eight? And that's possibly being unfair to mature eight year olds. |

"Just a cold, then?" sadly not for many. Please don't dismiss it carry on taking health precautions not just for covid but for the flu too. Had we continued with sensible precautions perhaps we could have had a flu season like last year. Not one that is doubled up with covid x

It is in the viruses best interest to become more transmissible and less fatal.
If it can evade our immune system/ vaccine's and not kill us in the process, it will eventually end up like a cold. |

We knew this flu wave was coming because Australia who had some of the strongest coronavirus restrictions had experienced it during their winter. |

There were pretty much no restriction in Australia in their winter. I agree it was a sign that flu would hit hard in our winter. |

The assumption is based on if we are the only species infected by Covid- we are not. There are over 30 species of mammals that have seroconverted to Covid. Some are constantly infected ( white tailed deer) and it is very pathogenic to Ape and Tigers. Genetic material from these mammalian species has also passed into the new variants.
We ain’t nothing but mammals and thankfully we have not seen a particular more pathogenic variant emerge ….. so far .
Coronavirus’s, like Covid, are extremely adaptable and with new variants , what maybe evolving as mild in one species could be devastating in another. |

Me neither. I think it's more like
Me neither.
1a. Conspiracy theorists
1b. Unvaccinated (other)
2a. Vaxxed and relaxed - will take more boosters
2b. Vaxxed and relaxed - won't take more boosters
3. The Zero Covid camp |

It's about a third of each...
1/3 haven't had any,
1/3 have had some but no more,
1/3 will take as many as their caring government tells them to. |

Its nowhere near a third of each unless you count children under 12. Around 95% of the population 12 or over have had at least 1 covid vaccination. |

It is very strange though how the variants are getting "weaker and weaker" but the hospitals are getting fuller and fuller, and the workplaces are getting emptier and emptier... More people saying that they are permanently feeling ill, apart from those that keep getting vaxxed and revaxxed, and wearing their "face nappies" whenever in any crowd situation. Those few seem to be staying really healthy, not even catching simple coughs and colds. Must be some sort of "immunity debt" problem that is preventing them catching diseases... Meanwhile increasing numbers of "I've got a really strong immune system, because I keep it in tune through exposing myself to plenty of germs" are clogging up the NHS. I'm sure that's just coincidence though... |

There's a lot of nonsense on these threads. An increasing amount which is backed by no data at all. But here's another thing that merits some thought. If you tell people enough times that they should be worried and they are feeling ill... They will feel ill and they will worry. Its self fulfilling.
I can't comment on hospitals. But let's not lose sight of the politics that are happening in those places. Its naive to think any "truth" is being shared at the moment.
As for work places being emptier and emptier? Really?
And yes. People need to take care of their immune systems. Why wouldn't they? Its why mums have chicken pox parties isn't it? |

1. There have been a number of articles shared on dramatic increase in long term illness and its effects on the economy
2. Mums have chicken pox parties, what, to inflict shingles on their children later in life? (I've never had chicken pox. I'm too old for it to have been in my routine vaccines. I got the vaccine in my 20s. No shingles for me ) |

After all China has stopped their newest variant with extensive use of masks.

The vaccinated in the uk adult population outnumber the unvaccinated by 20 to 1. Unvaccinated people overall are still more likely to die than vaccinated. That is all deaths and age adjusted. However you can't say that the vaccine is the cause of this as there are far too many other factors to say for certain. |

Behaviours aren't going to change even of the next variant was a mix of ebola hiv and covid... We'd still be arguing about the fact it's all someone elses fault. That is a good one too lol and yes. I did see what you did there. I think that this and other variants that will follow will get weaker and weaker.
Are you seriously suggesting that the problems with the NHS are the unvaccinated clogging up the system. I’d love to see that data bearing in mind the over 90% of the adult population have has at least one vaccination.Yes. I also want to know the data about it, as yes, as the adult population, who are unvaccinated might be now be in minority.
The vaccinated in the uk adult population outnumber the unvaccinated by 20 to 1. Unvaccinated people overall are still more likely to die than vaccinated. That is all deaths and age adjusted. However you can't say that the vaccine is the cause of this as there are far too many other factors to say for certain." wat do u class as vaccinated? I had the first three but its been well over a year now since my last one and just from people i know its nearly half who havent had anymore either |

Just for clarity... Youre asserting that you "cant say the vaccine(s) is the caUse of this as there are far too many other factors to say for certain".? Does that not also mean that you can't be certain then of any impact of the vaccine as there are the same number of other factors? |
