This new virus has spread from animals to humans in china.

A chief scientist has actually said, "No need to panic".

In Toms experience, when a misguided scientist says, No need to panic...

That's coz Tom is struggling with bias and places far more emphasis on the minority of occasions when they got it wrong than he does on all the rest.

Peoples are overstating Tom's influence in this Lounge.

Imagine if this were a real lounge in a swingers club with no play allowed except in the other rooms. How many would sit and take the time to chat to him, learn about his life and experiences and wisdom. Few he would guess. Sometimes there is a mob but Tom is no pack animal. He would rather run with the foxes than hunt with the hounds...

I'd be more likely to sit and chat actually. I likelearnjng about people.

But I'm guessing Tom wouldn't use the same opening technique as Tom does in this Lounge.

Tom - have you researched the problem any further?

A handful of people have been found infected. If 35 or so people in the UK, a small country in Europe, had suffered mild symptoms that are shared with many infections, they'd probably still be waiting to see if Doctor. Unlike China, where they've traced contacts, finding nobody seemingly infected and they have identified the virus! And informed the world. Impressive!!

Is there anything that points to this being a serious cause for alarm?

Nobody has died, I understand.

Sounds like you haven't read and understood most of the scientific research undertaken in the last couple of years. This has been 1 of the greatest periods of scientific development, progress and global cooperation, allowing unprecedented levels of multi-disciplinary collaboration. If you're not reading and understanding the credible scientific literature, instead relying on hearsay via various, often very dubious, outlets, you'll certainly scrabble a fragmented, biased hotchpotch that's unworthy of any serious thought.

Tom.

Whether you run with foxes or hounds a day out in the fresh air will do you a power of good.

Don't forget to take a bottle of water, sweeties and rub on lots of suncream, kids SPF 50.

It's important for humans to take all potential zoonotic viruses seriously, as there are likely many that could pose significant harm. As we encroach onto ever more previously isolated areas of wildlife, making contact with possible pools of viruses that we haven't faced before, our risks rise.

This current virus, so far, seems to show no evidence of transmission between people and its severity appears fairly low.

It's great that it's been so well observed, though I assume that the further we get from COVID, the global apparatus and focus will wane . We're probably lucky this time. The next?
