Anyone recommend good travel insurance which covers cancellations or getting stuck overseas due to Covid.

The one thing people are going to find out is that if you are on any waiting list for a medical investigation which has been delayed because of Covid, then many companies won’t even consider insuring you. A few will, but be double sure that you’ve declared everything.

I've toured a lot as a musician and almost always we ended up using the Post Office's own insurance as not only did they offer full cover in case of cancellations and/or getting stuck the medical and legal cover was, if required for certain countries, simply vast.

A lot of people travel thinking they're fully covered but often they're just not.

Of course this was pre-Covid days so I'm not sure how this has, if at all, affected their cover available. But not everyone knows the Post Office offers such services so hope it might help.

Thanks for those pointers, always bit worried about small print which of course no-one reads. Friend broke her leg abroad and was tested for alcohol before the hospital would treat her, apparently her insurance didn't cover if you had consumed alcohol which on for holiday insurance is pretty crazy, luckily she hadn't been drinking that day.

Try checking the insurance packs offered by your bank. We bank with Barclays who offer an insurance pack for £12.50 per month. It covers all of us for multiple trips worldwide. We had to call up and discuss a few medical issues that one of us have but turned out not to be a problem. The cover given is excellent and works out cheaper for us than anywhere else.

Definitely worth a look if you travel more than once a year.

You should be able to get cover for the initial cancellation due to covid/illness… cover for being stuck abroad I think you are going struggle with because travelling you are doing at your own risk…

To be perfectly honest. You need a recommendation from someone who has actually experienced the issues you mentioned. Majority of insurance policies are not worth the paper they are written on when somthing goes wrong.

We have taken the trouble to read and compare travel insurance policies and the Post Office one is good.

No policy is going to cover absolutely everything that could go wrong, but the idea the 'majority of insurance policies are not worth the paper they are written on' in a heavily regulated industry with the Ombudsman at the end of it, is nonsense. Thankfully, we have not had reason to claim much, but when we have, we have found insurers fair and reasonable.

Of course, those with dubious claims are going to have a different experience, which is entirely and utterly right

Many of the 'benefits' of policies now are about cancellation cover, which is less needed, as many holiday companies are providing free changes etc. It's about getting the cover you need. You don't need to be over-insured.

A bank account that provides cover may be enough, as someone suggested. If the bank account can be converted to a free one, when you return, it could be good enough. Check the account contract minimum term.

How did you get on searching for moneysavingexpert and covid travel insurance OP? They were providing lots of good advice.

Post Office one looks fine and ses also to cover costs even if you contract Covid while abroad. Only problem I had was the website crashing while doing an application for a quote but will try again tomorrow.
