I apologise. I thought you were talking about that crazy old conspiracy theory of vaccines secretly containing microchips. I see now you're not.

It's about a Swedish company that's been making and selling implantable chips for years. Yes, they've suggested they could create a wearable chip that could function as a COVID pass, but if you actually do some research, you'll see the chip is pretty big and there's absolutely no way it could be implanted surreptitiously or via a vaccine needle or similar. Some Swedes have been using these implantable chips for a while now, as an alternative to bank cards etc.

It's a relatively niche thing over in Sweden and so almost certainly even more niche over here. It's also no reason to get hysterical.

I read the story. I find the whole idea really creepy. And it feels like this sort of thing will be a thin end of the wedge situation.

It's been around for years, just not very well known or used (for obvious reasons). The concept pre dates COVID by a fair bit. It's just another entrepreneur trying to promote his product, having seen an opening for it.

The story is true, but the origin of the idea of a wearable chip pre dates the COVID pandemic considerably. The Swedish company website will probably have plenty of background about it - DSruptive Subdermals.

I've heard of subdermal chips before. Always found the whole idea creepy. I can just see such a thing being horribly misused in the future. I can also see a future where use of them is enforced. (Even though the current use seems relatively minor.)

Storing the data is pointless. They just need to store a unique identifier, pass that to a service and get a Y or N. Others in the past have used barcodes or even just a simple number tattooed on the wrist. Nothing could go wrong there could it...

Subdermal implants of any type are just a stupid idea ,

If they go mainstream as a all in one device.

Atleast if someone mugs me and takes my wallet and phone I go buy new.

Imagine in that future...

How did you lose your arm?

I got mugged for £3.50

My Cat has a secret chip under his skin the Vet uses it to check him in and out of visits. Dash (my Cat) doesn't know it's there. As for watching where he's going we didn't opt for the GPS camera peeking out of his bum version that runs Alexa and Netflix. Maybe next year huh.

I worked with a guy ten years ago who had one. Just the same as the one you put in your dog to identify it. Nothing new in the slightest.
