Cornell University reports more than 900 Covid-19 cases this week. Many are Omicron variant cases in fully vaccinated students

(CNN)Cornell University reported 903 cases of Covid-19 among students between December 7-13, and a "very high percentage" of them are Omicron variant cases in fully vaccinated individuals, according to university officials.
The school's Covid-19 dashboard was updated late Tuesday afternoon, accounting for the jump in case numbers reported.
"Virtually every case of the Omicron variant to date has been found in fully vaccinated students, a portion of whom had also received a booster shot," said Vice President for University Relations Joel Malina in a statement.
As of result, the school has decided to shut down its Ithaca, New York, campus, where it has about 25,600 students. Cornell's overall vaccination rate among students is 97%. |

With 97% vaccinated, you'd expect most of the cases to be in vaccinated people - that's how statistics work.
The big question is - how many were exposed to the variant and didn't get it? |

97% are vaccinated so it’s no surprise that the majority of reinfection is in the vaccinated.
The numbers we need are how they compare to unvaccinated and the rate of hospitalisation.
But so far it seems omicron is spreading 7-8x as fast as delta and it’s infecting vaccinated more |

While early reports indicate Omicron is a milder form of Covid (yes, I understand that saying something is milder is not the same as saying something is 'mild) we can still assume hospitalisation and death would be extremely low in this example due to age of those infected (assuming they're young adult students)
However, of note is the fact that Cornell has a reported 97% vaccine coverage
That 'virtually all' cases are in those that are vaccinated (and boosted)
This may indicate that Omicron IS particularly virulent and that case's will rise exponentially everywhere and in a wider setting the older populace Kay again be at risk
Further, it indicates that vaccine passports are useless in the face of the new variant as there seems little to no protection against transmission from the vaccines (so no point in division between vaccinated and unvaccinated, at least from a scientific sense) |

So you don't understand the stats, despite two people explaining them and you think that you've got a handle on the science? |

It's important because a big argument from supporter's of vaccine passports and restrictions set against the unvaccinated is 'well the vaccine stops you from spreading it'.
I think a lot of people's reasoning for supporting passports is less to do with scientific reasons and more of a moral issue (how dare they NOT get it, I don't want to be around such people). That is just discrimination but I'm sure you'll weasel out of that |

Omicron infects double jabbed and boosted alike. The symptoms improve but it is no barrier.
It's virulent but relatively mild.
A lot of the American stats are still linked to Delta atm as it is a few weeks behind us in the spread ans need to be considered in that context.

I get what your saying, but vaccine passports have been on the cards for a while before omicron when vaccinated people were very safe
Omicron had charged that.
Does a vaccine passport now make sense considering omicron possible high infection rate?
The answer is we don’t know. There’s evidence that the vaccine still protects people from serious illness and there’s still much more to be learned. It’s entirely possible that with a level of vaccination that spread is minimised
So I get what your saying. Are vaccine passports going to be effective with omicron suspected high vaccine escape?
The answer seems to be, we don’t know yet, it’s probably better to act on caution and hope they do.
It’s better that we are wrong and passports don’t help, nothing lost
Then it is we are wrong and they do help, and many more people lose their lives |

Relatively mild? Based on minimal evidence in a small area with low average age and limited obesity.
Let's just wait a couple of weeks before making such claims as fact.
Omicron is still potentially going to out more people in hospital at once compared to previous waves |

In a few months the Omicron variant will have adapted to the challenge of the vaccines and evolved into a new and more contagious variant that will be able to circumvent the antibodies produced by the vaccines and previous infections.
This process will continue as long as new vaccines are developed which do not kill off the virus.
The virus will continue to adapt and evolve if we can't kill it off completely.

It's one set of data and tbh the only set of data that we as in the scientific community who inform Government should take note of is how it pans out here..
As yet we don't have enough data so erring on the side of caution is probably not a bad idea till we know more..

Well I guess that approach would explain why we ignored what was going on in Italy a coupe of years back. |

"Look at South Africas stats and their chief medical officers assessment. Then feel free to wait..but be more assured. " Not their (SA) CMO comments, as he is very concerned; the comments that many are using are from the CMO of a small hospital where the variant was first detected as a separate entity

Not really, erring on the side of caution now with the many factors that weren't in play then is different to what then and up to Mar 23 2020 was a head in the sand very blasé approach by the PM etc .. |

Time for the general reminder that the purpose of the vaccine is NOT to stop you getting it.. although since it does help over those that are are unvaccinated, that is a secondary consequence (reports say roughly 33% less virulent in passing it on) The purpose of the vaccine is to mitigate the seriousness of the illness you get and keep you out of hospital!!!!
It’s scary after 2 years of this… people still have no clue or understanding about what the vaccine is there for! |

It does seem to be strange how people don’t understand this. Not sure how they manage to avoid the message that has been stated absolutely everywhere |

But the overarching argument for vaccine passports is to reduce the spread, ie that the unvaccinated are responsible for spreading the virus alone
There are plenty of people who still assume that vaccine means they are protected from spreading
The argument is that, as you say, the vaccine reduces severity of the illness in the affected person. Which is fine and if you want the vaccine to help protect you, then more power to you
But tmif people want to take the chance of fighting the infection without a vaccine that is their personal choice, and they shouldn't be punished with restrictions against their individual freedom of movement |

But tmif people want to take the chance of fighting the infection without a vaccine that is their personal choice, and they shouldn't be punished with restrictions against their individual freedom of movement" largely agree, but I suspect those who wish to take the chance will also rely on the NHS if they get very ill.
Also, there is a suggestion you get more mutations with unvax ppl, so you are increasing the risk for others that way. |

It's not wise to let people with little or no protection to interact with those around them, for their own protection and the protection of others.
Thats pretty much it.
