Covid: Greece to fine over-60s who refuse Covid-19 vaccine
Greece is to make Covid vaccinations mandatory for people aged 60 and over.
Fines of €100 (£85) will be imposed at monthly intervals from mid-January on those who refuse, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.
The money will go towards the Greek health system, which is struggling with a surge in hospital admissions.
About 63% of Greece's 11-million population is fully vaccinated, but data show more than 520,000 people over 60 are yet to get the jab.
"Greeks over the age of 60... must book their appointment for a first jab by January 16," the premier said in a statement to the cabinet.
"Their vaccination is henceforth compulsory."
The measure is still to be put to a parliamentary vote, he said, but lawmakers are widely expected to approve it.

I have to admit some of what were considered crazy ideas last year are now coming to pass.
I wonder how many of the half a million Greeks over 60 will now get vaccinated? Or will a large percentage hold out to be fined every month until they are taken to the courts?

For me its a step to far.
Despite not being a Conservative i have broadly supported the current Government in its handling of the Pandemic even though they have got it wrong more often than right.
If the UK Government were to even try and implement such measures here they deserve nothing less than being overthrown.
Whether the Greek Government think they have the best interests of the Nation at heart, this is just plain wrong, the Cradle of Democracy has just died. |

At least Austria are making it illegal to be covid unvaxxed for all adults 18+.
The fact the Greeks plan to target a specific age group smacks of discrimination to me.

Under common law you need to have harmed someone stole from them or to have caused them loss, in other words no victim, no crime. Even the legal definition of mandatory requires consent! |

 this is true, I have a friend in Corfu, who told me this last night. They are very strict with mask wearing, also. It is a €300, on the spot fine, for non compliance. Many tourists found that out, in the holiday season ! |

In Greece if get caught breaking the speed limit on the motorway you get fined. "No victim, no crime" but there is a fine. Governments make laws and if you break them you pay a tariff. You dont have to agree with them; that is the world we live in. |

Classical Athenians would not recognise our system as a democracy, probably an oligarchy, which they shunned after the oligarchic revolutions at the beginning of the fourth century.
They had a participatory democracy not a representative democracy, not particularly practical with population of our size. Officials chosen by combination of ballot and sortition (lottery - will of the gods).
Under our system, we entrust law making to those we elect. Doubt Athenians would recognise it. Not sure what the other democracies of a similar era might think - documentary evidence on such is pretty sparse. |

i don't support mandatory vaccinations but why does supporting them make them terrible people? Obviously in this case greece are making vaccination mandatory for over 60s people can stay unvaccinated and pay their fine. |

Common Law 'Breach of the Peace' for an example You can be arrested to prevent a Breach.
A Police Office can make an arrest if he or She believes an indictable Offence is about to happen or has actually happened.

enjoy governments deciding what is allowed and what isn’t. They don’t like making their own decisions. It’s easy to see why historically authoritarian governments can get so many people onside. Although thankfully I think most are snapping out of it now and getting on with life, whether it breaks rules or not. |

And who cares about the impacts of such restrictions? Economic? Mental health?As is the case now, you’re one of many basing decisions on covid and covid only. No other impacts. No questioning how long this can go on for. Just base everything about covid! You’ll still be saying the same in 2025. |

Since the economic crisis of 2008 in Greece and all the fake bailouts and all the rubbish about Greeks being lazy and not paying their taxes, Greece lost every bit of freedom it had and the Greek clownrliament has turned the Greek people into guinea pigs trying all the nasty shit on them first, before they apply it to the rest of Europe..
Do not believe anything that comes out of Greek or German media!
