Couple of facts too, Austrias vaccinated population is not "low" and its ICU is 20% filled with covid patients, 80% others (reuters).

Which article? As iv just seennreuters describe it as "one of the lowest for Western Europea"

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/austrian-covid-19-cases-keep-rising-provinces-prepare-full-lockdown-2021-11-18/

Plus 80/20 sounds expected is now full... Suggests normally ICU is 80pc capacity which feels a sensible place for having spare capacity versus not wasting money on space.

Yes but the lowest in Western Europe is still more than America! And why "Western europe", just compare Austria to all the countries on its own border and it's not bad. As ever, the goalposts have shifted to a percentage of the entire population despite a large proportion of the population getting no individual net benefit from it.

Some areas have particularly low vaccinatoon levels, so this is targeted, as has been discussed in the several other threads

I agree there is nuance in the risk. If all of your older population is vaccinated and the 40pc is from teh younger you have a very different situation than if the 40pc is from the older. No idea what Austria looks like.

But goalposts will change as the data changes. That has to be accepted, what is needed is a clearly defined idea of what the aspiration is. Eg what are we trying maximise, what minimise and what are acceptable trade offs.

Gibraltar's deaths are still really low versus the spike. Not sure about hospitalisations. I'm a little at a loss why they ate now in teh firing line.

Just heard on the radio that Austria is going back into full lockdown. It also is the first country to introduce mandatory vaccine for all citizens, I really find this quite sinister.

In other news COVID rates are falling in all areas of the UK, except for NI. Does this look like Boris gamble on reopening is starting to come good?

based on my behaviours .... It's because we are testing less. Hospitalisations look fairly stable.

That's a fair point, I do think there are a few who have become complacent. I still am not sure why or how being vaccinated should exempt somebody from testing or self isolation

It’s not so much about Boris’ opening, but more to do with the percentage of vaccine uptake in each country.

Most of the European countries that are currently reimposing restrictions, are countries with lower vaccination rates than us.

South Side.

I havnt seen any official site stating mandatory vaccination for all Austrian citizens. I think this would be a step too far for any government to consider. If a government is considering this course of action, they would also have to wargame the possible consequences of any attempt to forcibly vaccinate a population, without their consent.

Winner winner chicken dinner. As if that gap is the difference between lockdowns and what we have. Not to mention Italy being higher. Lockdowns are a political choice, always have been, always will be.

Again only partially telling the story

Unvaccinated people have been in lockdown for the last week….

From Monday the entire country goes into lockdown for 10 days

After that for vaccinated people things go back to normal, for unvaccinated people they will still be in lockdown status….

Actually that uk 69% figure is misleading because that is of all eligible people… which now includes those aged 11-18, which it didn’t before because of the restrictions that group had been under before

If you are talking about those aged 18+ , it is much closer to 80-85% of all eligible people

We have had a far higher number of deaths factoring population. That might suggest that the real number of cases we have had in the UK are also much higher (cases from testing alone can't be relied on). If this is the case then not only do we have a higher overall vaccine uptake but also natural immunity.

UK cases since we opened up have climbed slowly but in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands, they have shot up exponentially. Our increase is more in line with what would be expected when close to herd immunity.
