Are people happier to get the flu vaccine than the covid one?

Jump to: Newest in thread

Why? We get a new flu vaccine each year. And yet people seem unbothered at the idea they're taking a new vaccine there. And yet some people scream at the idea of taking a Covid vaccine.

Despite all the idiotic nonsense, I would be perfectly happy to have whatever jabs are available for the latest flu, Covid variations, etc.

The science is there: vaccinations work, possibly not 100% effectively, but sufficiently.

Anti-vaxxers are mutters, who are frightening people into inaction, unjustifiably.

I think it's just the fact that it's a crisis, we hear much more of it. People do complain about the flu jab and the others, in similar ways to them complaining about this one.

(This year's was a bastard )

I wondered this too…also the efficacy of the flu jab is generally lower than the Covid jab, yet people seem more against Covid vaccination

Pretty sure the annual flu vaccine a continuous tweak of the original flu vaccine based on roughly six months of data and learning from Southern Hemisphere (ie tweaked to tackle known flu variants cropping up in their winter).

So not a new vaccine at all, just an evolution.

I think ardent anti-vaxxers will never be sold on the Covid vaccines, but as time goes on and more data is available (specifically on long term impacts), the vaccine hesitants will start to have more confidence and be prepared to have the Covid vaccine(s).

When I was youngs/Raul, I refused the flu jab when offered free by works but then when the 'swine flu' arrived about 10 years ago, i refused at work but then paid for a jab via Boots and since then got one from work and now older and a medical conditon get it free via gp.

I think and if any doctors, nurses etc her the flu jabs are based on one platform, ie virus based. However, the covid jabs have two platforms, ie virsu and gentitcally modified and in the uk most people got the virus based one x 2 now offered gentically modified unless you have history of adverse reactions

Am I correct?

I meant as per my post, those that got the non gentic jab x 2 intially and all are being offered the gentically modified verisos now ie pifzer and moderna. I did not say pifzer was not the same as the one intially rolled out Nov 2020

Had the flu jab for 20+ years and in 2019 we forgot to get it done even through the bastard was in our fridge and I css as ugh the the flu badly which knocked me out for two weeks,we will never forget again!!!

Wife pays for hers and mine is free and this year I will have the Covid booster at the same time.

Talking of injections I had my eyeball injected yesterday and I had no idea of what was in it but I don’t fancy going blind so I trust my specialist like I trust all specialists really.

Jab or don’t jab it’s your choice and so it should be.

There are fatal or life altering complications known for flu jabs - Guillain–Barré syndrome is what I'm thinking of. It exists at a similar or more common rate than potentially fatal side effects from Covid jabs, per the literature.

I've had both my of covid jabs. Not had flu jab because of my age and tryna get booked in with a wait is like 8+ weeks, which I get because more vulnerable people need it unlike myself.

I've always been pro vaccination and always will be. I'd rather be protected and protect those around me.

If anybody is vulnerable to flu: check pharmacies in your area. In my experience, they're more likely to have flu vaccination stock at the moment.

Vera wise! The result of simultaneous infection with flu and Covid is potentially increased chance of death.

Not targeted at you but our immune systems also decrease their strength as we age. Anybody who has always been fine is talking about their past, when they had a better immune system, once we get to our later years. Far better to prime our immune systems with vaccines whilst they can work well.

Just supposing you are a company providing a vaccine and delivery service to GPs'....you pay your drivers a lowish wage...then along comes a driver shortage and some companies increase wages, dramatically, and some of your drivers depart....you then are unable to make a lot of deliveries....which is what happened.

My local council stopped picking-up green bins early, because of....you guessed....their drivers departing for better paid pastures..

Sadly it is not the virus that actually kills you but your immune system's excessive response to it. So it is better to give it a harmless vaccine to practice on first than wait for the full blown virus.

I have had Covid, husband ended up in hospital nearly died and my dad caught it from me ( i work in secondary school). I was his only carer..dad died.

I have had both Covid jabs and had a flu jab yesterday and will also have my booster before Christmas. Absolute lunacy not to try and protect yourself and others around you, selfish and totally irresponsible.

Hopefully the uptake by Secondary School students to have the Covid jab will be high as numbers at my School were rising every day.The vast majority of students becoming really ill from it is low however their ability to spread the virus is huge.

Plenty? I can't rem3the exact figure, but it was something like 5 in a million might get a clot and of those 1 might die. Not to mention that that was only from one of the vaccines.

Years ago they used a 'live' vaccine that some had a reaction too. They stopped using 'live' over recent years.

If you get flu, you will know about it. Not some poxy little 36 hour cold that you tell the Boss you had Flu.

Nope, 10 days of real bad stuff that will wipe you out and you wished you hadn't been born, sort of cold.

no , not all . But we lost trust in science on particular if it is unwilling to disclose the ingredients of its vaccines and is unwilling to take any liability if science went accidental wrong . Would go even further - calling anyone an antivaxxer who refuses the vaccine due to legitimate doubts is as good as calling a woman prude because she resists to have sex without her consent

All the licensed vaccines have all their ingredients listed. Vaccine manufacturers do not have absolute exemption from liability. If they make a bad batch they would be liable. Not getting a vaccine is of course an individuals choice but that decision should be made with facts not falsehoods spread around places like social media.

I think a lot of the hostility towards the covid vaccine is because of the impact covid has had on our lives.

Frustration about lockdowns and anxiety about the future leads some people to look for ways to feel more in control, or to fight back, and kicking against covid vaccines is a way to do that.

Flu by comparison doesn't lead to lockdowns and associated frustrations, so people don't tend to have that emotional response to a flu vaccine.

Whilst not doing down dangerousness of diptheria. Before the vaccine diphtheria killed around 2800 people a year. At its worst covid was killing 2/3 of that number a day and that is with social distancing and lockdown measures in place. After 3 does a modern diphtheria vaccine gives 95% protection through the childhood years which is when it is at its most dangerous. Interestingly enough diphtheria came back the uk because people stopped their children getting vaccinated for awhile. A bacterium is lot easier to deal with than a novel Corona virus but science has come a long way in a 100 years. Coronavirus is at least 100s of times more deadly than diphtheria and in an totally open and unvaccinated population probably many 1000s.

Understanding and trust I feel is the answer to that question.

I had no idea how scientists made vaccines until covid came along and now I only have a rudimentary appreciation. Why would I know more than that, I wouldn't because I have not spent years devoting my working and learning to understand such a thing.

If you would like to read an interview with Prof Sarah Gilbert that sheds a light on vaccine advancement and methodology in a way even I could understand you can find it on the link attached.

I think understanding and trust helps decision making, a 5 minute read could help that process on Flu jabs and Covid jabs and I would be interested to hear your thoughts if you take time to read it.

"Have we lost all trust in our immune system?

no , not all .

Produced using the DNA from dead baby foetuses"

Surely people on this site regularly exchange bodily fluids that form part of foetuses? All women and men on here have atoms and molecules from other human beings, animals and plant life in their body. How else do we grow from a baby to adulthood?

If you want to avoid tiny elements of other living organisms then stop drinking and eating anything immediately.

Totally incorrect I am afraid not Fetal cells are in any of the covid vaccines. Some other vaccines contain cells reproduced from a foetus aborted more than 60 years ago, but none of the covid vaccines do."

I can show you a manufacturers leaflet for the AZ covid vaccine which supports my assertion .

Never had a flu jab as I never felt the necessity, that was until a couple years ago when I'd had cancer & the doctor recommended I should from then on as more vulnerable.

Had the Covid booster shot yesterday & this year's flu shot, one in each arm.

I just accept it as part of getting older & it really doesn't bother me one bit.

It was developed with cells from HEK 293 but the vaccine itself doesn't contain any of those cells.

"Have we lost all trust in our immune system? "

. Millions of otherwise healthy people die due to infections every year. Our immune systems are amazing but they are far from making any of us immortal. Vaccinations are about training your immune system to counter threats it has not encountered before. You wouldn’t expect training to drive a car to give you the skills to fly a plane...

It's wise! Our immune system starts to become less potent as we age. In any event, if anyone was unfortunate to get a simultaneous Covid and Flu infection, they have a much higher risk of death.

When my mum was 9 she got diphtheria ,spent 11 weeks in hospital with no visitors allowed and only survived because she had been vaccinated

diphtheria is real so requires a real vaccine which is real and works this is proven that it is real and works

Covid on the other hand???"

Good news

We know Covid-19 is real and we've sadly seen the tragic consequences. We also have had the vaccines go through development and trials under the greatest scrutiny of any medicine. The trial research evidence is freely available, so you can progress from seemingly knowing nothing about that progress

Familiarity breeds comtempt, that is the flu jab is established and trusted. The covid jabs aren't even a year old, so no time to gain long term trust.

The flu jab on the whole is mainly being rolled out by Pharmacy's as most GP's are doing the flu jab alongside boosters.

Our immune systems often need boosting whether it be through healthy diet or vitamins or medication this is absolutely no different.

Just looked it up and quite startling for not that long ago. Flu vaccine starting to be introduced in the 1930's. Life expectancy for men was 58 and women 62.

Really, omg really...

After the years of stigma and campaigning because those living with HIV or HebB have been ostracised, had people refuse to touch them for 'fear of catching it' you think it's appropriate or even funny to compare an airborne virus with one spread only through very specific skin to skin contact (so specific that bodily fluids have to be introduced into the recipients body through an open wound)

So much this. I don’t understand why folk don’t get it that the problem with covid is that it’s airborne and easily transmissible.

"I think we should have a national compulsory hiv and hep screening programme with passports."

Statistically 1:411 in the uk have HIV and slightly more 1:315 have Hep C. HIV/AIDS kills circa 428 pa (mainly undiagnosed) and Hep C peaked at 318pa in 2014 since when the death rate has been falling. By comparison 1:82 get flu and it kills on average 11,000 a year. You can chose to get HIV and Hep screening at a GUM clinic. National screening would be great in a perfect world but then there would be screening deniers ..

If you were fine with your first jab, your 2nd should equally be fine....

Was any investigation does as to why the flu vaccine caused such a reaction? Was it an allergic reaction? Was it actually attributed to the flu vaccine?

Yes they was a big investigation going on as to why I was taken ill after having the flu jab. They basically said I had an allergic reaction to it

The astra was my first and I was ill for just short of 48 hours.

mis-types and auto corrects leads cock leeds

I remember the mmr furore not many years ago that caused issues not only for that jab but repurcussions for many other jabs, no mention by media or anyone else of anti-vax during that period.

Its not been helped by the continued goal posts moving by gov't and subsequent ignoring the jcvi recommendation all continue to create a mistrust of the covid jab.

The continued negativity by media and others towards people that have chosen to wait (for whatever reason) for the covid jab may have long lasting effects on this and if mmr is anything to go by, other jabs now and going forward.

He maybe is / was anti jab.. lots of people who heard of his research it was quoted in the media, at the time headline news, later discredited to a lesser extent reported, at no point was the label anti vax aimed at the people who chose to wait,

the possibilities of labelling people 'anti' may make (some of those who have concerns(same as the mmr jab), that may be alayed at a later date about this jab, make them anti all jabs or lose confidence in other jabs.

this term/label was media driven unlike when the mmr furore kicked off and its driving more distance than alaying fears.

Media and others keep up the anti jab pro disease yadda yadda and see where it stops. Far better building than knocking down.

"Pretty sure the annual flu vaccine a continuous tweak of the original flu vaccine based on roughly six months of data and learning from Southern Hemisphere (ie tweaked to tackle known flu variants cropping up in their winter).

So not a new vaccine at all, just an evolution.

I think ardent anti-vaxxers will never be sold on the Covid vaccines, but as time goes on and more data is available (specifically on long term impacts), the vaccine hesitants will start to have more confidence and be prepared to have the Covid vaccine(s)."

To be fair, the RNA vaccines were just an alteration on a long researched and tested “vaccine vehicle” that happened to be signed off at the right time. The same “vehicle” will likely be used for a HIV vaccine in the near future amongst other viruses!

Plus Oxford and J&J use adenoviral vectors, and Novavax and Valneva have different mechanisms again (if they pass, but looks promising).
