Open up, lift restrictions,
Live your lives, more infections,
Greater sickness, drive more wealth
Who gives a shit for Public Health ?
And now the shops are closed again,
The staff are gone, they rot in pain,
Some won't recover, their days are done,
Poor Steve was only twenty-one.
And now Long Covid's at his door,
He will not work forever more,
3 score years ahead he'll be,
Needing help from the DWP.
A thousand ? Million ? More like Steve,
Told to work, but now we grieve,
They said the short term cost was small,
The long term cost ? Not thought at all.
We planned recovery on our terms,
Oblivious to the role of germs,
They spread their dread and made some dead,
Now who's left to make our bed ?
And now we face much higher expenses,
For lifting gates and raising fences,
But some will say in their defences,
"The law of unthought consequences".
