Im a bit confused... At a time when we see headlines that our infections are heading through the roof, when there are more school kids being sent home and isolated than ever in their torturous thing that young peoples education and social lives have become, we are seeing 45k people no masks no distancing jumping all over eachother kissing and hugging in fans parks all over the country and now doing away with quarantine and travel restrictions in time for school summer holidays. Are there two parallel worlds here? Are we really trying to control this thing or have we seemingly given up and it's a free for all.? It feels very bizarre.

No OP, these are trial events. From my understanding everyone is tested prior to each one. That's the big difference.

There was a recent thread by Stephen Reicher on Twitter asking how rigorous all of this is, and if it's a political decision rather than scientific. It deserves a raised eyebrow, at least.

At the test events most of them you don't have to wear a mask or social distance it's all about negative tests and I know people that have been to the fan parks and had to show negative tests.

Of 1991 cases in Scotland 1294 admitted to travelling to England to be around the football game. So two thirds have caught / spread / both Covid. There’s bound to be plenty who tested positive who did not admit to travelling South.

90% of the cases were male 75% of whom were between the ages of 20 - 39.

You then see the scenes yesterday not just at Wembley but around the country and the majority were probably younger males.

The screening at Dreamland park Margate ended up like a war zone all manly younger males.

So …. Who’s probably the main spreaders of this Virus?

Ref the Stephen Reicher article Swing mentioned, it does seem that these "trial events" are very likely nothing but politically chosen publicity stunts. The events have been chosen for feelgood factor, there is no comparison measurements against population that do not attend these events, the checking for whether attendees really have tested beforehand, and follow up to get results of tests afterwards is poor to non-existent. What reports have been produced by scientists have been deliberately misquoted by the government to give an impression of rigour when authors have in fact expressed doubt at the significance of information gathered (which is pretty well the scientific jargon for "the data we've been given is a load of crap and lies, the results are just bollocks").

My expectation is that if by sheer good fortune these events do not end in catastrophe, the government will take credit at how supremely successful they have been in controlling infection; conversely if infection rates should soar, there will be a finding that Hancock used a flawed methodology, the scientists were misleading, all decisions were taken by junior members of staff, and something about Labour party.

Some have suggested that allowing these large events is a return to the herd immunity policy. I really don't believe that is the case, as that would require that there actually be a coherent policy. I feel that instead, it is a return to lack of policy, of doing and saying absolutely anything to get through the next 24 hours, of making it up as they go along, of not caring the slightest about the outcome as long as they personally are okay.

Nope, it’s all about returning to normal life as soon as possible for me. That’s what the vaccination programme is for. Look at the number of daily deaths from this virus compared to other causes. ” But people are dying” they wail. Yep, people are dying. Hard fact of life. Always was, always will be.

Yes, there are more cases but deaths and hospitalisations are staying low, that was always the point of the vaccinations and the lockdowns, to prevent deaths and hospitalisations.

That makes no sense whatsoever. So, if we were ignorant of all the information, then we'd not know about it?

I suspect of course we would, because without those precautions deaths would have been a hell of lot higher.

Can you elaborate on the 1991 cases? Was that on a specific day? Are these the number of cases were the positive individuals were asked a specific question?

See this from BBC scotland just now...

1991 people tested positive due to football. 397 of the 1991 actually attended the test event at Wembley. So in theory were tested in advance of walking into the stadium.

Later on in the article it actually states they don't know when those people contracted covid, they also state it doesn't explain the huge rise in cases in Scotland.

That sounds about right... I mean in the one hand... We lock down and jab away pretending to lower infection rates and hospital admissions and on the other hand we encourage huge events and travel which feels a lot like accelerating herd immunity... All that's missing is the cash bonus for attending one of the spreader events.

We're at that stage in the film The Beach where the bloke with the injuries was becoming a bit of a pain and got shoved to the back of the island so everyone can carry on without hearing him moan. Two very different realities yes and we are being a little bit expected to live in them both.

Does seem a bit odd. The narrative has turned from 'our NHS cannot be overloaded' to 'vaccines combat the virus'. There seems no concern that workers will still have to stay home if they contract it.

The Delta variant, although not causing deaths, will have to turn political focus to finance over NHS sooner or later. People will still have to isolate, take leave, be on ssp, have their job at risk, take time to recover etc.

Whilst the NHS will be able to get to grips with the backlog - Delta is spreading vaccinated or not - once the 19th comes and holiday can be taken, unless the NW/Greater Manchester is an exception, I would think Delta will spread.

Isn’t this inline with what both Whitty and Van Tam said about living with Covid. The current R number of the delta variant of Covid appears to be 1 to 1.6. The R number of seasonal influenza is 0.9 to 2.1, the R number of the common cold is 2 to 3.

This story is developing. At a time when certainly for most of Europe rates are coming down. We Continue with super spreader events, govt take more actions to remove breaks to control (eg removing sending compromised bubbles home from school)... We are on danger of becoming the isolated leper colony that nobody wants to visit and that nobody is allowed off. Govt policy seems to have done a u turn in some areas.

As for test/siperspreader events... Given what happened 3 weeks ago at eng v sco at Wembley with 20k fans... I wonder what happens when you triple tha number of fans? Lunatics really have taken over the asylum.
