Given the current low rates is now not the perfect time for a full and proper lockdown to see off the virus for good...or as good as we can get. Easing restrictions is obviously going to spark a huge increase, so why not take the opportunity now to lockdown one last time rather than let things drift and increase once more. Lock the borders over summer.

The only main problem is those who haven't received a vaccine it's only going to increase that way not those who have been vaccinated so weighing up what is more vaccinated or not whose going to be infected.

Yep, lots of suggestions and opinions thanks. Definitely not shy. Lockdown, close the borders, make vaccines compulsory, fine or prison for those who don't or won't, certainly no job. Military on the streets for those who break lockdown, one warning to go home and if they don't then terminate. All anti vax, anti mask, anti restriction etc etc posts to be traced and the originators imprisoned. A statue for Boris, Hancock, Witty, Van Tam and that lady whose name I cant recall right now. Ok im gonna come from this trying to see it like this should we lockdown due to cases rising up who to to say. I think we should more concentrate on the vaccine roll out and get more on the first dose at lest. Also in my opinion I think the country would riot if there was even a suggestion of locking down as most including us are fed up to the back teeth of all the restrictions the mounting mental health problems of not seeing friends family etc. As some that has been affected by this I rater see this end of this quicker thne most but as with most viruses it gonnna mutate and we have to ask when is closing the country down and affecting mental health worse and affecting our country businesses then a virus we are starting to get a hold off and beating .

The virus spreads by contact. Stop contact equals stop transmission equals stop virus equals stop positive results equals stop illness equals stop people in hospital equals stops death equals stop restrictions. How difficult is it? Lockdown, close borders, stop travel, stop contact, one month everyone all in, done.

Erm.....the vaccine doesn't stop the spread it reduces the effects of the virus. You still need a face mask and wash hands and distance.

I do agree lockdown now as more interaction can occur during the summer.

Aerosoles can accumulate in outdour areas where there is no breeze.

Borders definitely shut down, why was it still open to India in April?

Yet Abu Dhabi has been red listed since Feb and they have a way lower rates.

As said on LBC yesterday the Government doesn't know what it's doing still.

They keep pinning their hopes on the vaccine. Let's hope that doesn't effect fertility.

The vaccine reduces the spread as well. As been proved by the vaccination of Serrana.

Its not advice, its an opinion. Seems logical to me. Stop the virus by stopping transmission.....therefore stop social contact. As rates are relatively low it seems like a good opportunity to put the final nail in.

Lockdown prevented people being infected if people listened it would've worked better but we live in a country that has so many that lack common sense no wonder a majority of children are smarter than their parents I'd say that's why in past the population has been wiped out lacking knowledge but think they know everything because either someone on FB said or someone in the pub or Dan up the street knows everything said so and they have a degree in stupidity

Most have had enough. The lies and the bullshit don't help matters. Lockdown was never properly implemented in the first place so what is the point in going through the same sham again? Just shut the fuck up about lockdown please "

Certainly the case that for lockdowns to work properly they should have been implemented properly. It's all the dithering and doing everything in a half assed manner that has prolonged the agony. Johnson being terrified of losing support, so trying to keep one side happy by saying he's doing something, and trying to keep the other side happy by not actually enforcing anything he says he's doing. We get the worst of all possible worlds - crippling economic problems for the ones that obey all the rules, trying to do their bit to fight the virus, but sufficient numbers just totally ignoring the regulations to make all the effort nearly worthless.

If it wasn't for the vaccine program we really would have been up shit creek. Which has gone very well purely due to the efforts of many thousands of ordinary people and the knowledge and skill of some very clever people (none of whom are in the government).

Of course lockdowns work because you are sanitising society, it’s not real life !

In the meantime Covid19 will have killed circa 150,000 but people not being diagnosed with cancer or had treatment will be 500,000.

Our children are some of the most poorly educated compared to other countries but have almost lost a year of schooling.

When furlough ends in October it’s anticipated that we will have around 2 million more unemployed than when this pandemic started, add to that 19,000 hospitality businesses that have been lost.

Finally add the 20 million that flew in and out of our country during this pandemic, borders supposedly locked down, most to the Indian sub-continent, Africa and the Middle-east, everyone afraid to say anything for fear of being called a racist !

Lockdowns are brilliant we should have more !!!!!

Gonna completely ignore your other list of suggestions further down.

A full lockdown over a period of approx 4-6 weeks would probably eradicate the virus from UK. However, as long as borders are open the virus will just continue to be reintroduced on a regular basis.

Now correct me here if I'm wrong. But hasn't it been said all along lockdown was never about eradicating covid?!

It was about reducing pressure on the NHS and reducing deaths, etc.

Now if hospitalizations are low and vaccines prevent serious illness. No I don't see the reason to lockdown.

The way I see it is if you have say 30000 cases a day but hospitalised cases remain low it doesn't matter. If people are protected we don't need to lockdown?

If you decide not to have the vaccine quite frankly that's your lookout. Unless of course you can't have it, those people need protecting, that's what herd immunity is for

So Pakistan is, I believe, on the red list. So this neighbour should be strictly quarantining for two weeks after every trip. Wonder if he is?

Also wonder when his flight arrives at Heathrow/Gatwick/Stansted whether he and his fellow passengers are being kept apart in the arrivals area from other passengers from other flights from non-red list countries? Evidence suggests not!

Wonder if he uses public transport to return home from airport?

THIS is why we will continue to have outbreaks of the virus in the UK regardless of how many are vaccinated. The majority of the rest of the world simply cannot afford the same vaccine coverage, so mutations WILL happen and they WILL enter the UK.

It’s not going to work though - for the exact same reasons only isolating them vulnerable wouldn’t work.

You can’t have total lockdown. People need to buy food. They need to see doctors and dentists.

People still need to mix in care homes, and fire stations and hospitals.

Essential services, even if you cut them to the bone, still have to go on so you are still going to have transmission.

It’s not going to go away completely. Rising numbers is inevitable as restrictions loosen. It’s expected and, as long as it doesn’t go crazy high, it’s ok.

I kind of don’t understand why they didn’t do a world wide 4 week lockdown in the beginning. That would have stopped this virus from the start. The only way we are going to stop it is of all countries work together but we can’t even get the people of this country to follow rules so we are just going to have to live with it.

Like fixing a leaky bucket with sellotape.

The virus is here for good. In time it will be viewed the same as the flu, we’ll just learn to live with it.

Moving forward, more lockdowns would have more negative ramifications than the virus itself, the economy, mental health etc etc, and even if the government tried to impose them, do you really think the British public would take any notice? I doubt that very much.

"The virus spreads by contact. Stop contact equals stop transmission equals stop virus equals stop positive results equals stop illness equals stop people in hospital equals stops death equals stop restrictions. How difficult is it? Lockdown, close borders, stop travel, stop contact, one month everyone all in, done.

Hahaha...

You have absolutely no idea!

You mean be like parts of Australia? Lockdown for nearly a year, no travel, no schools, businesses shut, masks everywhere. And now just going back into yet another lockdown after two tested positive in a nursing home.

Sheer lunacy

Lockdowns Do Not Work!!

"

I notice "parts of Australia"

What about the other parts, where Draconian measures have killed outbreaks stone dead, and they have their lives back with almost no death or illness?

How awful it must be

I'll have to tell my family how much better it is in the UK. I'm sure they'll send help for my addled mind

i think everyone has gone in hard on the OP like he is a lunatic to be honest when the premise isn’t all that broken

its effectively what Australia and New Zealand did last year - complete lockdown while cases were low, entirely eradicated it from their country and then went back to pretty much normal life

the reason i disagree OP with this for the UK is down to a few things -

1. we have so much lockdown fatigue now after this long and our enforcement is rubbish , so even if we decided that was the strategy it would only be the people following the rules that get penalised, the flaunters will continue to flaunt, we wont get 100% lockdown, therefore not 100% eradication so its wasted effort

2. our border control is shocking - even if we did eradicate it we would let it right back in the door the day after, we did nothing about changing how trade / supply is brought to the UK so even if we close the airports we still have entry points wide open, unless the whole world did the same lockdown at the same time and it went away globally, again aiming for eradication in the uk is wasted effort

Gonna completely ignore your other list of suggestions further down.

A full lockdown over a period of approx 4-6 weeks would probably eradicate the virus from UK. However, as long as borders are open the virus will just continue to be reintroduced on a regular basis."

Absolutely close the borders, we can’t get moving for caravans & motorhomes from down south. Given that flights are still coming in to your airports from India, our border should be closed to non essential travel.

I am a key worker but don’t think like this. Some of us have jobs that require us to be at work, some have jobs that can be completed equally well without travelling. There have always been those that work from hone, even pre covid, we have just adapted working practices to allow more to work this way, surely this is a good thing. Why expose more people to risk than is necessary throughout this whole pandemic

I’ve felt that way for a long time and at times openly challenge tribalist binary arguments, just because! I truly hate the absolutism displayed by some, the passive aggressive nature of others, and the stating of FACT by others who subsequently fail to provide a source for their info.

I reckon everyone should get in a room together and try talking to each other in the same way as they do on social media - might be a few black eyes!

Though I am not in favour of a full lock down again as home schooling is a balls ache, I did venture out to Thorpe Park yesterday as a surprise for someone and as they are meant to be working at reduced capacity to lessen the risk, why did it still take 2 hours to get on a ride plus the car park was bloody full and there was no social spacing which was very frightening and stacks of people wearing no masks , shoot the lot of them I say ????

Thankyou for your comment. I dont want lockdown in an ideal world but we are where we are. Cause and effect, actions and reactions. The government is apparently data led and the best way to convert the data is to lockdown and kill the numbers. If we carry on as we are the numbers of infections will continue to rise, deaths will continue to rise and ad hoc restricrions, tier systems, local restrictions will be reintroduced.

We have never been truly lockdown. First one roads were pretty empty and Cummings screwed it all up by going to get his eyes tested. Second lockdown and suddenly everyone was a key worker. Flights still entering the country from red zones. Its here to stay get used to it and get on with your lives.

Given that the virus has spread World wide and the UK's reliance on imports then there is no way to totally avoid any re-infection. Add to that the fact the UK is a global travel hub. The only way to totally stop any infection would be to totally isolate the uk from the world...as the UK isn't self sufficient on food and many other products and relies on imports and exports to survive economically then it's not possible...a lockdown now would probably only delay any re-emergence of infections. Add to that the huge financial and mental health issues associated with lockdown then is it worth it ? The vaccine is showing it reduces the infection rate and serious cases among those who do become infected. So no another lockdown isn't the answer in our opinion.

Based on the fact that we have 5 flights a day from India coming into Heathrow and we’ve allowed 20 million through our borders this last year during a supposed lockdown our government have proved that they are just a bunch of brainwashing scum that have handled the whole pandemic worse than a third world dictatorship !

Now we have a Nepal variant that the WHO claim they know nothing about, who’s lying ?

I don't need attention, I need wider society to wake up and take responsibility for their actions and how those actions affect others. Life has certainly not passed me by. I have travelled the world during my studies and career...places most don't even know exist. The whole point of my post is that I wish to return to those freedoms instead of bumbling along in green, Amber, red zones which change weekly. Lockdown now, make a final effort. If we don't we will go on in limbo for the foreseeable.

It's amazing that people will reject an idea as attention seeking (or insanity, or virtue signalling, or whatever) just because it sits outside what they've contemplated.

I get where you're coming from, OP.

Still won’t work! You would need global cooperation on an unprecedented scale (it won’t happen) with all countries doing a full lockdown simultaneously for the same duration. All borders would need to be closed for that period. To achieve that, all countries would need a stockpile of food that has been distributed to their population (no perishable goods). Import/export activity would need to stop. Due to loss of income for many people during this period all countries would need to provide a grant to everyone, should probably mandate utility companies provide gratis for the lockdown period and so on and so on.

"Given the current low rates is now not the perfect time for a full and proper lockdown to see off the virus for good...or as good as we can get. Easing restrictions is obviously going to spark a huge increase, so why not take the opportunity now to lockdown one last time rather than let things drift and increase once more. Lock the borders over summer.

The only main problem is those who haven't received a vaccine it's only going to increase that way not those who have been vaccinated so weighing up what is more vaccinated or not whose going to be infected."

Wrong wrong wrong! Lockdowns do not work never have never will, even if you have the vaccine you can still contract it, it doesn't stop you from catching it! Think before you speak! Or at least do some research!

Ranting and blaming others won't help resolve anything. Covid does not care what any individual thinks. The number of cases has trebled in last two weeks - another full lockdown now is the only way to get back on track.

All this is is a reason to be watching the data. Hospitalisations, ventilation and deaths have so far not increased dramatically. If they do a conversation needs to be had. Otherwise we risk running for the bunker every time we hear a loud bang. I know as I did the exact same thing a few days ago.

So yes there most certainly IS proof that lockdowns save lives AND reduce the infection rates. The evidence is irrefutable.

The lockdowns don't cost much - it is the delays before them that ramp up the cost. Locking down and closing the borders in early March last year was deemed too expensive. Might have cost us 6bn or so. So we went for the cheap option.

Therefore less spit and snot sprayed at each other, therefore less germs. lockdowns don’t work look at country’s which have had no or little restrictions to country’s with hard lockdown same as states in America which act independently deaths are infection rates are the same "

Please explain the biological mechanism by which lockdowns fail to prevent the spread of germs.

I'm asking for evidence, not the repetition of rhetoric.

Let us be honest, it does not matter what anyone on Fab thinks it does not matter what the people of this country think, it does not matter what the science says, all that matters is what fucking BJ and his cronies think.

I was a supporter of lockdown when hundreds (if not thousands) of people were dying and being admitted to hospital seriously ill, but the death rate is low, and whilst the infection rate is rising again deaths and serious cases are not.

However if BJ and his pals think there is more money to be made from keeping us as we are, or tightening lockdown again HE WILL and he wont give a fuck what anyone else thinks or says !

Another factor is how does the country continue to keep funding lockdowns?

As the Government has previously said - there isn't a magic money tree.

Also - a far greater time bomb is starting to go off... mental health caused by the last 15 months.

Irrespective of whether we like it or not there has to come a point where we have to try and live with Covid around as there will ALWAYS be new variants.

To me the science matters, but what will determine what happens is a) what the politicians decide, b) if it's communicated effectively, and c) if the country comply.

I will follow my understanding of the science, because it's not about me. Hopefully I'll be safe soon - less than three weeks until I have a full immune response. I'll do what I can for others.

I think the ship has sailed for full lockdown, but the idea that we just let it rip, after all we've done, after all we don't yet know... Risking all that sacrifice...

It just beggars belief.

in theory they should work but they you only have to compare country’s and us states but what ever proof you get you will not believe it because your obsessed with pushing the government narrative about this virus which to the vast majority of people people is not deadly and for the vast majorty they won’t even need any medical intervention. The fact are out there in plain site . I’ve worked right through this as have most people I know and we’ve carried in as normal seeing elderly relatives etc with no problem . Try listening to some of the experts the MSM won’t have on .
