If they are going to delay the 21st opening they need to say so now.

Far to many businesses are investing a lot of money (which for many is a last throw of the dice) to open on June 21st and hope a successful summer helps stop them from going under.

I'm no expert, and I rarely follow the news on the subject now, but I was wondering how people believed June 21st was going to be the end of it all

Especially those who believed the clubs would be fully reopened.

How is it selfish for wanting to have a normal life and not being driven by fear of death, (death is a part of life)

Stay home do not eat any sugar fatty food, don't drive in case you crash, don't smoke drink etc... as it might kill you.

get vaccinated and get on with it now.

Data not dates. It was the mantra from January.

The May 17th relaxations were going to be the most risky, as they potentially brought so many people together, in to situations that could foster higher levels of problems.

We're still not in the place where we have all of the data yet, on how those lack of restrictions are affecting us all. And we still, each of us, have abilities to ensure that we get the data to a better point.

The Indian variant is a struggle for us and we need to ensure that it doesn't take too strong a hold.

I think we should have delayed the May 17th changes, to force the understanding that everything is still at risk and we each have to continue to behave to restrain infection levels and to get the country to the right point for relaxing restrictions even further.

I sense that most people took it as a done deal that we were as good as already at June 21st.

What about all the people who've lost loved one who couldn't get help or urgent treatment due to the fixation with Covid at the expense of everything else? If you were one of them how would you feel? If your loved one had just been told his/her cancer had progressed to stage 4 because they weren't treated in time? Would you be being ignorant and selfish?

If it was truly about data not dates then we’d have been fully open weeks ago. As it is current rates are way ahead of the best case predictions of Imperial College.

Next you’ll be telling us that if we hold back we might be allowed to celebrate Christmas this year

Of course there will be a third wave, and a fourth and a fifth, but that in itself does not matter, its how well our vaccinated bodies and the NHS cope with it that's important.

We have seasonal waves of flu, are we counting how many waves we have had of that? No, as it's generally under control.

Fingers crossed that with the vaccine rollout, future waves will not hit us as badly as the initial ones.

Hospital admissions, seriously ill and people on ventilation should be the new yard stick now. These figures have remained steady

Also we need to be telling people how many of those in the category above have and have not been vaccinated.

It's time for public health and the government to be far more stern and transparent about how this is reported.

At the moment all we can do is speculate, Boris keeps saying that we are still on track for a further easing of restrictions on 21st. The data is suggesting that all the headline figures had dropped to their lowest level for a long time but have stopped declining, but then the modelling was forcasring modest increases in infections in line with each easing of restrictions.

Ultimately, the decision will rely on the "government's" interpretation of the data as it sits in their chosen model, plus their own assessment of political implications of the given choices.

In the end it is just a matter of wait and see and having everything crossed and be interesting as some have said what reaction there might be if ...but doubt it if anything will happen as people still believe in Boris/Alex and he's pretty much teflon coated the hardest things are coming down the tracks though and then ..

I believe you've over estimated the influence you have over the situation. It doesn't "end when you decide" it will end when the virus is no longer a threat.

In the UK we are bordering on being in control of it here, but then we have to consider the impact of foreign travel too. I can see the domestic unlocking continuing as planned, but foriegn holidays and other international travel could take another year (or more) to get back to normal.

One death is a terrible tragic but death is an unfortunate fact of life.

On average 5 people die in the UK in road accidents, do you call to ban all cars?

Do you drink? On average 20 people die a day from alcohol related illness... are you calling to ban alcohol?

Clearly we can’t allow Covid deaths to get back into the hundreds per day but we do have to accept some level.

We are being told that all/most being hospitalised in Indian variant hotspots are unvaccinated... well I bloody well hope so or else what is the bloody point of the vaccines?

It’s a bit “no shit sherlock!”

As has been said above the key factor is not number of cases it is number of hospitalisations. Is the NHS in those areas overwhelmed?

The other factor that we need to know is whether the proportion of people within a specific age band that are getting hospitalised is changing compared to before the vaccine rollout. To be clear, not the proportion that make up the numbers in hospital (we already know more younger people than other groups) but whether the proportion compared to population number across UK of that group.

This will show whether the pattern of infection and severity of infection has changed.

I'd be intrigued if they repeated the test events now what the outcome would be now that community infections are increasing fairly rapidly in the age groups who would attend. Better still repeat it in leicester or Bolton or hounslow and see the outcome.

I said potentially to give them chance to explain, showing I was open to change my initial assumption.

However, in my experience, anyone who says ‘FACT’ in capitals is usually trying to slam the door/phone down because they’re closed minded and unwilling to be open to any other viewpoint.....

I don’t tend to attack. I’m more reasonable than that.

Yes deaths maybe low and we have a large amount of people vaccinated and getting there's every day, however giving the virus a chance to spread again gives it more opportunities to mutate. It only takes that one person to catch it for a variant to form. We've been lucky that all variants so far are protected by the vaccines. One bad mutation and we could end up right back at square one. It's a critical situation and not over by a long shot.

From my experience anyone who shouts FACT is usually wrong to a greater degree ..

My worry is who exactly are the 'dirty bastards' you refer to? Because it isn't clear..

Are they uk people not vaccinated returning to the uk ? Because there's plenty of them around not dirty bastards though ( apart from being on Fab..if they are! ) likely they are quite mucky I'd say!...

Or are you referring to someone else? And again I wouldn't call them dirty..lots can't get vaccinations yet in their own country you know!..that said the UK continuing to let people in who are not safe is crazy.. But they never learn and they keep making mistakes..unfortunately that sort of attitude is what will keep the waves and the variants coming. .

Air travel should not have started a cross the world until people had been vaccinated in my opinion .. But they would lose the tourist pound then wouldn't they! :/

I think we have also bought into and are now spreading the large number vaccinated trope. Only 49 per cent of adults have had both doses. That's a very long way short of herd immunity by vaccine. Which if I remember was predicted as somewhere between 70 and 92 per cent from a year ago. So actually

.. Compared to some countries we have more people vaccinated... But I'm not sure it's large. And I'm not sure its currently doing any good to stop the surge in infections and hospitalisations.

Infections up over 30 % today and hospitalisations up over 20 % today. We have a problem anyway you observe it.

I don’t understand why people are reading so much into the constant media stories. It’s just clickbait. Every day a newspaper asks a ‘scientist’ there opinion and they say something that is then slapped across the news like it’s gospel

Look at the data. Zero deaths yesterday for the first time since this all started. And the PM himself once again reiterating he sees no signs that could delay the roadmap

Agreed. Even Andy Burnham stated a few weeks ago this was largely brought about by those travelling back from India and not quarantining / isolating effectively.

The question you have to ask did covid alone kill the person or did it contibute to an already under lying health issue

On the first lockdown someone I know father died of sepsis they wouldnt let him in to see him even in his final moments

An guess what they put on the death certificate that's right covid! Because they were told to

How is it selfish for wanting to have a normal life and not being driven by fear of death, (death is a part of life)

Well in UK since the start of the pandemic last 6 days from now we have had no deaths, but we have around 3000 cases of people infected with the virus, do could be the possibility. Or the heat we have now kills the virus.

Just a few thoughts around this topic, perhaps to share out loud. I don’t believe this wave sequence will stop. Wave three, then wave four and so on. The world has changed, and YOU included. Economies are down, entire industries are at risk, local shop owners/SME’s are shutting down (or about to), business advise employees to work from home, school are adopting remote learning and we have all been groomed to being isolated.

Do you really believe things will ever go back to pre-covid?.. billions have been spent on this current form of “normal” and millions of people have lost their jobs/at risk of loosing their income, with that, comes further debt challenges (mortgage, loans ..etc). I don’t believe that this global governments initiative/direction is only about COVID. The data doesn’t point to anything tangible in the sense that is more alarming than accidental road deaths, suicides, influenza deaths, cancer just to name a few- perhaps COVID is at the bottom of that list from death/year ratio. Whether your for vaccines or against them, for lockdown and isolating or demanding your “normal” day back - this change is irreversible. One thing that actually lacks data is the long-term effect of vaccines in protecting from different virus strains or from potential long term side effects/disabilities resulting from taking the vaccine, not just one producer but multiple Pharma producing different types of vaccines.

There is no selfishness or ignorance in wanting to go back to our “normal” daily routine. We are social by nature and isolating is not something anyone prepared for. Certainly not for this length of time. It’s not like we have a choice in the matter to decide for anything anymore - big brother is doing all the decisions on your behalf

Thoughts?

I'm not sure anyone who describes people as "woke" can be taken seriously.

Nobody actually wants lockdowns, but people have been killed by the virus so it is understandable that people are concerned by it. I personally know several people who have died due to the virus, and several more who are suffering months of health issues despite being previously healthy.

The ideal situation is for as many people as possible (globally) to be vaccinated as quickly as possible. This will effectively remove the problem, protect people from getting sick and reduce the rate of mutations.

Whilst it isn't selfish to WANT everything to get back to normal, it is most certainly selfish to be willing to risk other people's health and well-being to achieve it.

As for Big-Brother! I think it may be worth reading the book (George Orwell's 1984) if you want to make a real comparison... we're certainly not there yet.

For me, I am missing being able to go out and play gigs with my bands... and having sex with strangers at swinging clubs. I am however willing to wait a bit longer until we're allowed.

Well...me too.. We've swapped messages before... We share a passion for gigs.. But that will come eventually... I think we need to get community rates lower and vaccine rates higher before that happens.

But... I don't feel we are even close to being locked down. Everyone's allowed out.. To hug or not to hug... (as Shakespeare once said)... Pubs, restaurants, shops, gyms, pools, aiports are all open and doing a roaring trade

"Just took my grabdaons to Blackgang chine isle of wight. today for the first time in over a year. Absolutely rammed packed. No social distancing whatsoever. So get the popcorn out and watch for the figures to rise on the island. It is gridlocked with tourists. Took me 1 hr to drive a 10 min journey. I pray it wnt happen"

So one of those who helped pack out blackgang chine is complaining how packed our it is,wonder how many others said the same, however the fact is cases didnt rise last summer when exactly the same thing happened, cases stayed low until autumn

"Just a few thoughts around this topic, perhaps to share out loud.

Thoughts?

I'm thinking... I went out today... And saw normality... Shops.. People.. Work.. Not entirely sure what it is that we are locked down from doing anymore..other than large events. I could understand the gnashing of teeth if we were not allowed out of our houses... "

What a terrible thing to say. Shame on you"

Take away the racist undertones and look at the actual facts here.

The Indian variant was brought back from India.

Vaccine hesitancy is high in the Indian community

We need to start publishing data that tells you how many people are in hospital that refused the vaccine.

Technically it'll be fourth wave. We had the third wave in January after we were 'given' a relaxation at Christmas...

I'm sure it won't be the only reason. But when you look at the stats of the number of passengers who were tested positive on arrival its surely a big contributor.

Third wave inevitably will be here. However the data is looking promising, very little deaths with the Indians variant at the moment, it’s mainly just positive tests. Bolton hospital had a critical event but other hospitals are taking some of the load.

All in all I don’t think another lockdown is the right move for the moments, although I do think we need to delay the freedom day a little just to make sure

Doesn’t bore me at all lol I find it quite interesting and it’s good to see where we might be heading. Definitely a swift uplift, I keep my eye on the deaths though as I think that’s a key indicator just how bad things are getting and they are going down, to even a day of no deaths. Hopefully it will last

So that was yesterday. Today we have had 12 deaths. The more people that get admitted to hospital the more they risk having to go on ventilation. The more people on ventilation the more people risk death

One day is irrelevant, as it will be affected by the bank holiday, the seven day average is what the government will go on. The numbers in hospital are the important ones

Yes hopefully it will last and we don't need to worry about deaths or long covid increasing. The pattern so far in the previous 3 waves has been infections go up... 2 to 3 weeks later hospitalisations go up... 2 to 3 weeks later deaths go up.

The patterns previously were before the vaccine programme got into big numbers .

What people are forgetting is we had all these scare stories about packed beaches etc last year, cases didnt rise, they only went up when autumn came and people spent more time indoors, we also now have nearly half the adult population fully vaccinated so the risk is now very small. There is one section of society that is still at risk, we all know which one but it appears the government and the media both lack the balls to.say so.

It would be good to know of those in hospital... Age range and vaccine status.. It might give some comfort to folks... Or not. Of course we wouldn't normally give two hoots about flu vaccine or any other vaccine status... But the need for info is because a lot of people don't believe a lot of the messages we are being fed and also... To your point... Want to stop the dancing around the problems...

We were told back in January that the vaccines are the silver bullet and it looks as they are !

Covid19 deaths are averaging less than single figures per day, yet deaths from cancer are running at 450 a day.

Covid19 is here to stay, we either get on and live with it or just forget ever living a normal life ever again !

When did he or anyone else stake any reputation in it.? At all points from announcement to now it has been at pains to say it will be data not date led and each stage is dependent on the key measures (these are obviously top secret as we can't be trusted with them) being met and that they are "no earlier than" dates.
