My daughter and her partner (26 and 27) had theirs on Saturday. They queued nearly four hours at a walk in clinic in Manchester

I had a text from the NHS advising me to book. When I looked the nearest appointment was 25 miles away. 8 days later I got a text from a surgery 8 miles away and I booked there for the next day. Might be worth sitting tight for a week.

Vaccine centres have limited control over the supply of vaccine to them. Recent events in India (biggest producer of vaccines) has further compounded supply issues. I can assure you that appointments are only rearranged with very good reason and it's unlucky you've been rearranged twice. Clinic staff are working their arses off and many are volunteers.

Have to say I do wonder this too. To me it makes far more sense to push 2nd vaccines into the older groups and help out global vaccine supply than do the under 30s here

There are quite a few people under 30 suffering from long covid, I am 33 so in no risk of dying but the thought of having long covid is enough to make me jab up.

Hmm. The evidence says you're wrong.

This is the reason I am booked mine in, risk of death from covid is tiny for me (no health conditions). However, the risk of long covid is much higher and do not want my way and quality of life impacted by 'flu'.

So all booked up for both jabs, as it's not the AZ jab, I have to travel that bit further, but had plenty of options within 20mile radius

Some areas are doing a lot better than others at getting through their age groups.mine is doing rubbish.

I wonder why they don't just get everyone in now.... We need to get everyone done sharpish and I can't see any benefit in restricting age groups now. They are all doing it for the good of us older farts... Thank you!

I've heard a lot of 40 and under are struggling to get appointments - probably a combination of vaccine supply, plus the demand. Probably best to leave it by age. Because, I know my risk at 35 is low, but it's higher than for 25, and a 35 year old is more likely to have older relatives than a 25 year old. Maybe. Dunno. I don't see the sense, anyway, in just opening it up.

Well.. On the basis that we need to get more done more quickly. When we needed to hit the 1st made up deadline date we were up to 750k a day. Doing more a day seems ton make sense to me. Doing year group age slices is just over complicating it and dragging it out now. Stick a stake in the ground. Everyone done by end of June. Youngsters have lives to plan too.

Sure. But there have been vaccine supply problems. If I have 10 doses to give out, you can say give out 20 all you want... I'm going to give out up to ten.

I wasn't aware there were any supply issues... (apologies for listening to radio twitty). I knew there were issues in April, which were predicted, but assumed they had been resolved as we are almost in June now. It just feels like we are dragging this out as long as possible now. If there are supply problems it would be good to hear what the constraints are and when they will be fixed. Although under 30s are on a different regime anyway.

Nobody is dragging anything out. The people operating vaccine centres are working 12hr days, 7 days a week, with a combination of paid NHS staff and volunteers (who have other jobs in responsibilities) to give as many vaccines as possible. But we can only book X appointments in a day. We can only give the number of vaccines as we have doses.

India's issues, plus global shortages of vaccine excipients, packaging etc. have lead to slow downs in supply. We also have to now bring all second dose appointments for the over 50s several weeks earlier at the same time everything is opening up to the younger age groups.

Cut us some slack, folks. If you have to drive 20 miles, or wait a week or two longer, you are still getting a vaccine WAY earlier than most countries in the world and you're getting it for free.

That's interesting. And don't get me wrong I'm not being critical of the legions of jabbers who are getting this done and in the main doing a brilliant job especially the volunteers. . But you have more knowledge of this so a question .. On 20 march we managed to vaccinate 844k roughly people... From memory we had a govt imposed made up target to hit. That daily high number has never been close to being hit since. Yesterday we did... 378k...less than half that peak number. Now I have switched off a bit from govt announcements but I recall whitty stating there would be a slow down in supply ( a bump I think he said) in April but all back to normal in May and I don't recall any clear statement stating there were supply issues. (but I may have missed it due to covid fatigue). So... With the panic over the Indian variant in the last 6 weeks. What is stopping us going faster?how can we have stop me and jab me walk-in centres in Manchester and not nationwide? Its gone very well, but the last month it hasn't felt like it is going as well... Possibly just my perception. It feels a bit like that long tail of an exponential curve. With apologies if I'm talking shite!

In searching... I found this on the BBC which I found a very helpful update.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55274833

Others may too. And to reiterate. Thanks to all the volunteers who have got us to where we are now.

Is that an official government statement or just a common sense interpretation of global events? I haven't seen anything from gov saying we are slowing down because we are supply constrained?

We've ORDERED enough. But deliveries of the vaccines have hit the aforementioned bumps. Moderna are unable to deliver to their original timescales, for example (it's easy to find info with an online search). Our Govt don't seem to want to put anything out that makes our vaccination programme seem like it has issues. And to be fair, the issues are mainly outside our (including our Government's) control. We can't control private businesses scaling up production, or foreign Governments blocking exports, or global raw material shortages etc.

Once we've done the 8-week second doses for the over 50s, more than likely they'll bring the 45-49s forward too etc, so we will continue to have to be as agile as we can.

I have students in countries where the virus is resurging but their families haven't had any access to vaccines yet. They'd be very pleased to travel 20 miles in 10 days time etc. They'd snap your hand off. Oh, and they would probably have to pay for it.

Sure... It has that feel to it. I personally think if we have an exit plan... And a summer holiday program, that is contingent on vaccine passports for at least some of it... And yet the vaccine program is not going to be able to deliver two doses (plus 4 weeks to work) until end of October... Then people should be made aware of it. You can't make it out of fairy dust but equally, events and flights and destinations which say only open to double dosed (in a vaccine way) people... Well I wonder when they believe that they will be getting that second or even first dose.

The promise was everyone over 18 would be offered at least the FIRST dose by July. No-one has ever promised a full two doses by summer. We are, apparently, still on track to offer all over 18s at least their first dose by July

"

I think June was set for people over a certain age to be ok, and we'll ignore what happens to younger people. They'll probably be fine. That's totally a viable strategy during a pandemic.

FPM Statement on COVID Vaccine Supply May 2021

Posted on: Friday 21 May 2021

Author: FPM

And from an Indian online news outlet:

"Govt rejects Serum Institute of India’s request to export 50 lakh doses of Covishield vaccine to UK

Amid reports of Covid-19 vaccine shortage across the country, the Modi government has refused to allow Serum Institute of India (SII) to export around 50 lakh doses of Covishield vaccine to the United Kingdom. While rejecting SII’s request, the central government insisted that the local vaccine production be supplied to protect Indians first."

Oh I meant a statement from our govt clarifying supply issues, not India.. if such exist... Or if we have stocks hidden away.... Or if we have sufficient to achieve whatever goals they have set (the only target I can find re vaccine program is "remaining population offered 1st dose by July 31st".

Presumably all second doses by 8 weeks after that?

It just seems to have gone quiet.

We've ORDERED enough. But deliveries of the vaccines have hit the aforementioned bumps. Moderna are unable to deliver to their original timescales, for example (it's easy to find info with an online search). Can the UK meet its target of offering all adults a covid-19 vaccine by 31 July?

The promise was everyone over 18 would be offered at least the FIRST dose by July. No-one has ever promised a full two doses by summer. We are, apparently, still on track to offer all over 18s at least their first dose by July "

Quick sanity check...

1st doses have been averaging about 150k a day for the last 2 months...

38m 1st doses delivered so far..

Population over 18 about what 55m?

So 17m 1st doses to go... Round it down say to 15m to go... At 150k a day... 100 days... Or another way... 15m in 60days is about 250k a day.. Doable.. Come on a final push!

We're trying! I'm taking annual leave on Friday to vaccinate and giving up my Sunday morning too. It's the best I can do. Lots of us doing the same too. But we rely on the stuff in glass vials being delivered to our door - if there are more manufacturing or export delays, then it will slip. It's not for want of trying.

If you live in one of the 8 areas on the Govt Indian Variant cock up lockdown mess they created you can get a jab no problem. They are literally letting anyone have one 18+ having opened extra sites doing Pfizer.

After much decision I have booked in for tomorrow with a centre 25 miles away, it’s an hour there and an hour back but I feel it will be worth it. Luckily my second job is booked for August 15th and am very lucky to be having it in my closest vaccination centre (only 8 miles away). I think the compromise will be worth it though.

Viruses only mutate if they have a host to enable them to replicate their genome. No host = no replication = no mutation
