The Black Fungus. It's rife in India and Covid makes it easier to contract it, with 50% mortality rate. It's in the air.
It attacks the nasal passage and in worse cases it destroys tissue.
This could be bigger than Covid. Be prepared. |

It appears only to be a problem in India and looks like it might be coming from faulty equipment

Sounds sensationalist. Is it a risk here? Unlikely.
The UK, compared to India, has a large proportion of its population vaccinated and also has great levels of good healthcare services. This opportunistic infection is very sadly an issue due to the rampant infection levels there and the extreme difficulties that people have in getting good medical treatment. We've reduced severe covid-19 problems, by restrictions and vaccinations, so are in a completely different position. OP - how many cases here currently and forecast? If its linked to serious infection illness and possibly management of symptoms, then the UK is a totally different place |

"Quick fact check. 54 people in India caught it. Easier to catch after steroid use (used to treat covid so that's the only relationship to covid) and is comes from mould in the soil."
Stop press...bbc now reporting nearly 9000....what a difference a week makes |

"Ffs scaremongering.. time we got rid of this forum and ban virus talk from all forums "
Hmm. Maybe compassion for a serious health crisis?
Banning talk of the virus would be censorship, would it not? |

Dr Sampath Chandra Prasad Rao, skull surgeon, Manipal Hospital (Bengaluru) made the presentation about mucormycosis at the meeting and felt the probable reasons for the surge in black fungus may be contamination, either due to low-quality cylinders or low-quality piping system at the ICU level in
hospitals. |

Sensationalism at its finest.
This seems to be the norm these days, reporting the juicy bits but leaving out the facts. |

We have a totally different climate and infrastructure to India so comparaisons need to be more intelligently sourced. |

Hmm. In those it affects, if not treated quickly, it's got a very high fatality rate.
I don't think this is being oversold - it's a crisis within a crisis in India. Is it likely to be an issue here? No. Does that mean it's a non issue? Also no. |

Fortunately we have the medical infrastructure to make it less of an issue if we do.
But even if it never happens here - look, it's appalling what's happening over there. Compassion, not scaremongering |

The news certainly made journalists salivate at the prospect of more juicy scaremongering.

So would people rather not know? To me it's not scaremoungering, it informs me and then enables me to look further into something if I want or label it as not really relevant.
For instance there has been a lot of major eruptions lately of some rather interesting volcanoes... there are pages and pages of doomsayers on the internet stating how devastating. Yet even the news reports they are quoting on state zero casualties. People tend to see a head line and not read further. |

Yeah, I find the scaremongering refrain bizarre. It's a thing. Which is happening. Are we not supposed to discuss the news now?
Particularly virus related news, in a virus section? |

So a very brief search has highlighted the biggest cause of this to be a prescription mismanagement. The steroid that is used in SOME covid patients is an antifungal drug which is being used in too high a dose and for too long.
It also appears to be solely in cases where the patient has disproportionate blood sugar levels.
8800 cases in a population af 1.4 billion is hardly case for panic and scaremongering, but I will concede that it highlights a problem in the diabetes cases in India. |

Who's panicking or scaremongering?
It's a life threatening issue if not treated properly. It's a growing issue in India, where steroid use is more frequent, along with diabetes.
India is already up shit creek, this compounds it, poor them. |

Reporting what’s happening in India isn’t scaremongering. But I would say the last sentence is ....
“This could be bigger than Covid. Be prepared”

But doesn’t there lie the issue ? People reading something and then dissecting it and only reporting/commenting on parts, therefore it being taken out of context.
To me the post is scaremongering. The whole point of it is to scare that there’s potentially an even worse pandemic on the horizon. |

Or... I ignored the bit that could be scaremongering and focused on what I felt was the issue?
I don't see the problem. It's a virus related issue, in the virus forum.
You don't have to discuss it if you don't want to, but I don't think it needs to be poo-pooed either |

Discussion of the issue isn't scaremongering
If you think a certain bit is, ignore it. I think "this might be the next Covid" is a bit melodramatic, so I left it be. |

Depends on what you perceived as the issue.
The first part is unsubstantiated and cherry picked soundbites, the second part is a warning. |

Well there’s always another pandemic on the horizon. There’s no way of telling how far away that horizon actually is though. |

Black fungus isnt contagious, so cant be transmitted from person to person its a fungal infection that gets in cuts, etc
This according to some doctors in india, may be attributed to someone/group going on the internet and telling people, that you can cure covid by covering yourself in cow manure, amongst other things.
The cause is still under investigation but, it does affect more people with a weak immune system |
