Pre-travel testing anyone?

Jump to: Newest in thread

Serious question: Has anybody had to do a pre-flight or pre-travel Covid test and what was your experience?

I am asking because two people intending to travel followed the rules to the letter:

They posted the tests via priority mail, as required 3 days before travel so that they would be within the 72 hours as required for the test to be valid to travel abroad.

They used different providers but otherwise everything was the same.

Both had the acknowledgement that their tests were being processed but today, some 72 hours after taking the test, neither have had their results which was guaranteed to be back within 24 hours in one, 24 to 48 hours in the other.

In other words, the expensive test was a waste of time as both missed their travel. They are still waiting for the results.

Curious as to whether this has happened to anybody else, please?

I have but not in this country. Got the results back in just over 24 hours.

I'm very wary of the postal tests, I'm going to try and find an in person test place that can guarantee 24 hour results.

i used pre travel tests last year, did lots of research before i picked a provider, including calling the lab itself to see what their operating hours were (they were 24hours including weekends and it became about getting the test to them in the appropriate time frame from the courier), then checked the courier pick up times etc

in the end the company i picked were not even in the uk - it was randox in ireland but they had the best service for someone flying out on a sunday - no issues with getting the results in time

The one company did guarantee that - and they received the sample in time but failed to deliver.

I have had results back in less than 24 hours when abroad as well. I was just beginning to think ... conspiracy lol

If you find one, would you please let me know - thanks in advance.

Will do although I might go with Girlinlingerie's tip.

I've changed my travel day to a weekday rather than weekend as I'm nervous of testing times.

The last time I travelled I had to reschedule because I couldn't get a weekend test.

Both times we have travelled out of the UK since needing them we did this...

We booked a rapid turnaround test. Involved us driving to Leicester (1 hour drive), nurse came out and did the swab test through car window. And we received results following day. There are companies all across the UK offering this service.

when i was looking last year they didn’t have anything in person in scotland except boots and only 1 out of 3 of us could get an appointment in the window we needed ... there might be more options available now that they expect travel and demand to increase

might also be worth checking the lab again with demand increasing too - in november they told me they had an average 8 hour turn around from when the test arrived at lab, and the dx couriers picked up from the drop off centre at 5 pm with the tests arriving in ireland the following morning

I travel to Europe for work.

And I’ve never had this problem of not getting my results back. They are usually pretty good.

However. Each country is running on different sets of rules. Because singing off the same hymn sheet is too easy!

Airlines are being awkward and not very accommodating for things like this.

Every airport now has antigen testing facilities. So you can always get one of them and they will allow you to fly. So I’d never not turn up to my flight as you can get an antigen test.

Boots are doing your PCR fit to fly tests for £99.

Which is considerably cheaper than what I have paid in the past.

"Apologies I am bumping this one - in case somebody has had a similar experience. "

I'm also interested as I need to do a trip to Brussels as soon as possible and have no clue what when how etc...

I did see a news story a few weeks ago which told similar stories of tests being booked but not showing up, tests being returned but not being processed and in some cases test results being returned without tests being sent off. It sounded a rubbish service.

And the telephone numbers supplied being left unanswered.

But from what I've read there are no alternatives.

Boots are the best. Really easy to use and always have your results on time if not early!

Thank you for posting - Boots was one of the tests that were used - not the instore but the posted PCR and that result came back 3 days later (= a day too late) unfortunately.

Have not had issues in Europe, just in the UK - guess it was just unlucky then.

Thank you everybody for posting - much appreciated.

So now, thanks to all your suggestions and posts on here - I have done more research and found a test guaranteed to give results by midnight the same day - means we have to travel about an hour but that sounds worth it.

They are called DAM health (no pun intended!)

I’ve had the 2&8 day tests delivered to my address when I am returning to the Uk and both have been done and sent back. I’ve never had results off them.. makes you wonder.

Personally would only ever go In store to get my fit to fly certificate. Never had a problem doing it this way.

?? Fit to fly cert is basically your result with the time the rest was taken and date recorded on it with usually a QR code for scanning.

Scam or not you’ll not get abroad without that cert

How soon are you travelling? Let us know how it goes. Fingers crossed for you.

I was thinking Boots in store but now I'm worried.

We missed the shuttle this time because of the test result delay but are planning on doing that trip again in 2 to 3 weeks.

Meanwhile one of us is flying out to Europe next Sunday for a week and will try the DAM test.

All travel relating to work btw.

Absolutely, that is the other concern - what happens upon your return and if anything has changed in the UK classifying your country of travel red/amber or green.
