But they only normally mutate if the virus is prevalent and it burning through enough hosts to mutate like the Kent one! If you keep a lid on it it should stop we need to shut the fucking boarders like we should have last January but we still haven’t learnt our lesson!

We need to learn to put immediate travel bans in place or for those returning to the UK who are in a prevalant country that has been identiffied as a high risk area to return into quarantine. Not self quarantine but proper quarantine until they test negative. The people who rush back to avoid quarantine rules are likely to be responsible whether knowingly or unknowingly for bringing variants back, so if that factor is removed we all might be safer and stop future lockdowns occurring.

Uk test positivity percentage

12th April 0.2%

12th May 0.2%

It's hardly surprising that they are finding cases when they are doing surge testing.

Just to put a bit of perspective on this in January we were averaging 50,000 cases a day with a test positivity rate of 12.8%

When the last wave hit we were averaging 14,550 case a day with a test positivity rate of 4.5%

On the 12th May we were averaging 2,300 cases a day with a test positivity rate of 0.2%.

In January we were averaging 1250 deaths a day.

At the start of the last wave we were averaging 450 deaths a day.

Today we are averaging less than 10 deaths a day.

The vaccine has put us in a very different and stronger position in this pandemic.

Unfortunately you have to look forward not just at the present. If the variant that's causing concern right now proves highly transmissible, hospitalisations could peak again and the NHS will not be able to cope.

Fully vaccinated people will be at reduced risk (although vaccine protection doesn't work for everyone) but what about those waiting for their second jabs and the millions still yet to be offered their first?

We also need to remember that some recover from the infection but suffer long-term physical and mental health consequences. So it's not even just about death, but long term quality of life for many.

But of course it's not even just that. There are Covid deaths, but also many tragic consequences occur because access to treatment for other ailments is unavailable when the hospitals are full or still recovering from long lasting backlogs from when they were overwhelmed.

We just don't know right now the extent of the danger posed by this variant, but until we do the scientists have to conduct models and the politicians are duty bound to prepare us for all possibilities, including the most unpalatable ones.

I am depressed at the possibility of June 21 not happening, but I don't see any freedom in choosing not to take on board advice we'd prefer not to hear.

To be honest, Boris hugely played down the expectation of further lockdowns or delays to the existing roadmap. He did agree that it "could" cause an issue and was being monitored, but that things seem to be within agreed boundaries to continue the unlocking plan.

It would have helped greatly if India had been put on the Red list at least at the same time as Pakistan & Bangladesh. Having 1,000 people a day travelling from India will not have helped. Boris just never learns & people will again pay with their lives

I believe the information has come from this tried and trusted source ....

1. Read something off the front page of a newspaper (newspapers need something sensational each day on the front page to sell)

2. Misinterpret what’s been printed

3. Change completely what you have read

4. Start posting it in online forums

For me the only thing worth noting each day is the amount of hospital admissions and deaths. All the rest is just speculation. Let’s just see where we are at come June 21st

The Office for National Statistics estimates fewer than 50,000 people currently have the virus. The figure was 1.25 million at the start of the year. Currently there are only around 1,000 people in hospital with Covid.

This is directly quoted rather than twisted mis reporting.

I’d rather focus on positive current facts like this rather than things that might or might not happen in the future

Common sense no body should want to travel abroad when their is a global pandemic given each virus is different and bring back something that even the vaccine given wouldn't be able to control

Why do so many people insist on telling people what they should ‘want’ to do. If you don’t want to travel abroad, no problem, that’s your choice I don’t have a problem with that. If someone else does want to travel abroad, and follows the various guidelines regards testing, isolation, quarantine etc when needed. Then that’s their prerogative. Let people lead their own lives and do what they want to do, not what you think they should want to do

I understand your point with hotels but given people traveling around alone in UK whether weekend break or longer and those who use the time for clubbing use hotels then there is hen and stag parties wouldn't any of these need a room in a hotel unless a area was picked that didn't attract tourism

I suppose with that advice with risks involved people are still expected to receive NHS treatment if catching the virus this I highly wouldn't agree with as isn't enough data to show if anyone is protected with the vaccine they have already received

Also how would this be classified as punishment when it's a global pandemic and trying to control a dangerous virus that can kill, it's like saying because was allowed to travel pushing the blame on being allowed and catching the virus in another country

i dont actually have a problem with foreign travel as long as it is controlled and monitored and deemed to be safe - the countries which are safe chosen on data and not politics

same as i don’t have a problem with measured removal of lockdown restrictions within the uk either

its the folk trying at every turn to skirt round the rules that have really wound me up over the last year or so , the ones that appear to have 5 social bubbles , and have been gathering in houses and hugging for months, that have still been jetting off in the last 5 months finding a way to excuse it as essential travel, the ones posting meets on here all year trying to shag strangers because their sexual needs are more important than others health and well being and financial needs

its the selfishness of it that bothers me while the rest of us have sacrificed with the aim of beating this - some people their entire social contact and others their business and livelihood

Time will tell.

Whitty has said this will become the dominant strain in the UK.

Two scenarios:

The buffoon chancer running the country was told by the scientists about this variant weeks ago, and, as a multi-billion pound trade deal was on the cards with India, (and an election)he not only allowed free travel , (while you were sat in the rain drinking beer),but even gave time to come back without quarantine so as to not upset India,in fact he even intended going there in person.

1. After the false doom predictions of the S.A, Brazil ,and Kent variants etc, etc, he may have chosen to go with Herd immunity and chance it.

2.The effects of this variant apparently dont fit in with the previous one which predominantly seriously effected the elderly, the vulnerable and can possibly evade the jab.Hence the Army and rush to vac younger people and the "drip" "drip" of conditioning for more lock-downs.

If this goes wrong, and it IS more dangerous and evade the vax this will be his biggest mistake so far-I wonder if his disciples will still adore him knowing he has thrown the Brits under a bus for a trade deal?

People won't stand another lockdown huh? That's what they said before the one before this one.

Indian variant? Kent variant? that's countries and counties covered. How long before the town based Milton Keynes variant comes along?

And then we've got the parliamentarian review of the fixed terms act to think about.

Despite my interest in conspiracy theories, I have no doubt what so ever that Covid-19 is very real and that it kills people.

My only doubts are about whether Covid-19 originated from chinese bats, chinese laboratories or somewhere else.

"

Why do so many people insist on telling people what they should ‘want’ to do. If you don’t want to travel abroad, no problem, that’s your choice I don’t have a problem with that. If someone else does want to travel abroad, and follows the various guidelines regards testing, isolation, quarantine etc when needed. Then that’s their prerogative. Let people lead their own lives and do what they want to do, not what you think they should want to do

I understand your point of not having a problem, but in reality it all of us that ends up suffering and going back into lockdown just because and I'm sure I'm not alone on this and would like to get back to at least some sort of normality

i dont actually have a problem with foreign travel as long as it is controlled and monitored and deemed to be safe - the countries which are safe chosen on data and not politics

same as i don’t have a problem with measured removal of lockdown restrictions within the uk either

its the folk trying at every turn to skirt round the rules that have really wound me up over the last year or so , the ones that appear to have 5 social bubbles , and have been gathering in houses and hugging for months, that have still been jetting off in the last 5 months finding a way to excuse it as essential travel, the ones posting meets on here all year trying to shag strangers because their sexual needs are more important than others health and well being and financial needs

its the selfishness of it that bothers me while the rest of us have sacrificed with the aim of beating this - some people their entire social contact and others their business and livelihood "

Deliberate decision and now he is culpable for his action it does make me wonder if this is bit of population control.

Dangerous bloke dangerous games being played.

"We need to learn to put immediate travel bans in place or for those returning to the UK who are in a prevalant country that has been identiffied as a high risk area to return into quarantine. Not self quarantine but proper quarantine until they test negative. The people who rush back to avoid quarantine rules are likely to be responsible whether knowingly or unknowingly for bringing variants back, so if that factor is removed we all might be safer and stop future lockdowns occurring. My main concern is either the vaccine works or it’s a bag of shit, as Boris intimated a few weeks ago when he stated that the fall in deaths was down to lockdown and not the shit vaccine !

That’s my rant on the cunt that’s supposedly running the country out of the way anyway !

Seriously though, look at the number of people that have actually had Covid19, add to that the amount of people that have been vaccinated and finally add to that the fact, that according to Whitty younger people get the virus but aren’t hospitalised from it.

Based on that why should we - as SAGE stated today - have more hospitalised than the last wave at the start of the year ?

Surely the mathematics don’t stack up, if we supposedly have herd immunity a few weeks ago !

Close the borders. Nothing in or out. Of course we will probably starve before covid ends.

Only holiday in UK. Help create a new Kent strain or a brand new London variety.

Don't travel abroad to a country with a level lower than here. Come visit my area, which is currently a hotspot.

Yes it's a global pandemic but hiding away won't stop it in a society built on global trade. Even if we fully lockdown for a year we would still be vulnerable. The virus wants to survive and multiply. Vaccinations and living as normal life as possible best way.

I saw an interview with an 83 year old lady during lockdown. "I don't have long left anyway. I don't want to spend those days imprisoned in my home."

Close the borders until the world has the pandemic under control, far better we are free to roam our own country than locked in our homes again. It is probably a small percentage of the nation that insist on going abroad for a few days sun and booze so if they are stopped it won't be that big a price to pay. If you working abroad either stay there for the duration or we have to furlough you, that won't be anything like as big a cost as furloughing a lot workers in the UK.

People will start moaning about covid cases at holiday resorts throughout the UK then

Or perhaps the virus doesn't mutate in the UK oh wasn't there a Kent variant

Let's be honest when people holiday abroad they mix less with people they tend to keep themselves to themselves they spend most of time outdoors as weather's better than in UK

I don't blame anyone from wanting a break elsewhere

Perhaps if everyone who had been offered the vaccine had taken it then fewer cases would be finding there way across borders

If these are the sort of comments that dictates our government’s policy on Covid19 then we are in for a long wait for freedom !

sage are one set of advisors , they don’t make the rules , the govt also have other advisors including economic advisors , its then the govts job to weigh things up and make decisions so the opinion of one sage advisor wont make one blind bit of difference as she doesn’t create policy

I don't believe in anything SAGE say after one of them broke the lockdown rules last year. "

I don't believe anything men say. One lied to me so they are all liars. All of them.

"I can see this june date being pushed back"

You're probably right there, as we're relying on peoples common sense to keep things safe...that's just asking for trouble

Time to follow the french example.when the uk variant was found the french shut down the borders between england and europe for two weeks and the lorry drivers were quarantined at an old uk airbase . We should do the same now

Unfortunately the wankers Whitty and Vallance are all you ever see the government roll out with their ‘graphs of doom’ to scare the population never to lead a normal life ever again !

I don’t believe the financial impact assessment has even been done by the government on the overall impact of lockdowns on the country, it’s all been about ‘don’t kill granny’ !

I can see today's easing being pushed back. In a parallel universe, where we are governed by people who act rationally.

This is a false dichotomy. If we had adopted a zero Covid policy we would have suffered very little damage to the economy and the mental health of the nation. We are carefully steering a zigzag course to the the worst of all possible worlds.

By fretting about the economy we are consistently closing down late, re-opening early and inflicting maximum pain.
