surely they just need to put in mass testing for a short while like they did in Liverpool last year and seemed to work , act quickly to contain the problem and then eventually liverpool have reaped the benefits by getting all the trial gigs |

From the BBC analysis...
This spike is related to international travel, particularly with people returning to Bolton from India.
The cases are now in the community and it seems to be located around the south and south-west parts of the town.
Interestingly, the cases are very much stacked in those under the age of 25.
There were 721 cases reported yesterday in those aged five to 25.
Part of this is because all the school children are testing twice a week, but it is very much present in that younger age group. |

But it is one of those "no shit sherlock" moments isn't it..? . Indian variant found in Indian community having just returned from India...which is in the middle of a huge outbreak of Indian variant covid cases. Hmmm hindsight a wonderful thing but surely could have been avoided if we just stopped all travel from India for a while when it was first identified.... 6 weeks ago |

We struggle each time we know we have a problem and sit around for ages, as it's just other people's lives, or something and someone isn't bothered enough.
There are clear links between lower income levels, piorer housing, health quality, employment insecurity and other issues, connected to the pandemic. The Queen didn't mention much of this in her speech yesterday.
The variant of concern from India has been present in the UK for quite some time.
Its numbers are doubling every week, week after week. We don't know mum about its real world affect on immunity, from jab or prior infection.
We should be concerned, as this is a potential bigger problem for us. Delaying action will cost dearly. But some people don't want to lose out on pubs next week etc. |

Well in fairness there have been govt and local NHS working parties set up for months to encourage particular ethnic minorities to take the vaccine as uptake levels were lower. If you Google bame vaccine hesitancy it will thrown up a few of those articles from a month ago...
Not sure if that answers your question though. |

Not really no. It was a specific question to a post that claimed this was the reason for Bolton.
I am aware some people and communities have been reluctant to have the vaccine |

It's a tough 1 Rugby. If we delay targeted action at the areas with increasing numbers of people with the variant, we risk having a problem that gets ever harder to manage. If we delay reopening society back up, we hit the economy and public opinion again. Part of the problem is that the genetic testing for variants adds an extra delay, before we get to know the reality of local situations - we're already put into a position of trying to play catchup.
If I was in charge, I'd apologise for messing up plans but would delay the next stage, whilst doing major local testing in the hotspots, to gauge the reality ASAP. It would keep England on an equal footing, without local variation.
We can only be powerful if we understand where we're at and decide what we need to do about it, in my opinion.
I'm guessing that things will not change much publicly and we'll reopen more next week. I'm not sure we've been strong at learning from our experience and that kicking stuff out into the future, possibly to deal with it then, remains more attractive still. |

You make sense.
I think it was reported that they knew about this last week so I was surprised the opening up was still going ahead Looking at the numbers and how it has rapidly spread, it is worrying.
I think I would have rather they delayed it if there is a chance we open up and then have to go back in again as that will be worse for me.
What a nightmare. |

Bolton businesses are very worried about being closed again. We've never been out of restrictions, we didn't "unlock" in July at the same time and had high level restrictions for the whole time outside of national lockdowns. Businesses cannot cope. But we can't have unfettered spread either. |

What I don’t get is how are people traveling to India are going in the first place.
As far as I was aware no holiday travel was allowed so I assuming all these covid cases that have been imported due to people going abroad for work and family purposes. Maybe I am being a bit blunt here but with covid rife across the world why would you want to travel.
I guess it is people thinking oh I am ok Jack attitude

An equality report from Bolton council (that I cannot link to) in 2018 states that 83% of Bolton residents describe themselves as white British or another white background. 7.8% of the population had Indian backgrounds whilst 4.3% had Pakistani backgrounds.
This is as up to date as I can find without this year's Census data being available. Bolton was very different 10 years ago in many, many ways. |

Blackburn didn't have specific legislation written for it, as far as I can see (did a search on gov.uk). They made use of provisions already existing within the Coronavirus Act and tried ward by ward restrictions, but apparently no-one knows what electoral ward they live in and I think they abandoned it when Tier 3 came in across Lancashire. |

This Indian variant is suspected of being more transmissible than the Kent variant, giving rise to the large increases of it. Without people living in difficult situations, of housing problems, income inequality etc, this is cause for concern, just as we are about to open things up. You may have escaped infection last time but the same level of contact with people now could be enough to let you gain infection.
Younger people who aren't vaccinated, could be the typical unlucky people who could manage to get infected, whilst out in greater proximity to more people from Monday. |

"You really have to ask that question ????.k . A lot of the ethnic minority are refusing the vaccine due to religious beliefs
And they not having reg tests
Oh right I didn’t realise that Bolton was the only town with a large ethnic minority.
You asked the question..you obvs wanted an answer.k
You gave the answer so convincingly...do you have evidence to back your answer?
From the BBC analysis...
This spike is related to international travel, particularly with people returning to Bolton from India.
The cases are now in the community and it seems to be located around the south and south-west parts of the town.
Interestingly, the cases are very much stacked in those under the age of 25.
There were 721 cases reported yesterday in those aged five to 25.
Part of this is because all the school children are testing twice a week, but it is very much present in that younger age group.
Anything about people refusing vaccines and not having regular tests?
Funnily enough the spread in the area near to us is from a college of younger people too
But it is one of those "no shit sherlock" moments isn't it..? . Indian variant found in Indian community having just returned from India...which is in the middle of a huge outbreak of Indian variant covid cases. Hmmm hindsight a wonderful thing but surely could have been avoided if we just stopped all travel from India for a while when it was first identified.... 6 weeks ago"
Absolutely this!
You gotta wonder why the delay in bringing in quarantine for flights from India. Surely it couldn't have anything to do with billionaire/millionaire Indian business owners wanting to quickly escape India and get into UK? I mean I am sure it has nothing to do with Rishi Sunak’s billionaire father-in-law! Apparently he is changing his name to Imal Ritjack.

"This Indian variant is suspected of being more transmissible than the Kent variant, giving rise to the large increases of it.
i was reading an article yesterday that confirmed the age group up to 25 were seeing higher than others level of infections at the moment , it was caveated though that that age group have higher level of testing due testing for education etc |

Cases of the India variant in England had increased from 202 to 520 as of May 7, PHE said, with almost half related to travel or contact with a traveller
This stat really sums up why people are fed up with people taking the piss. So you telling me all these people had essential travel to India. Tbh recently I saw 4 people being interviewed on the news, and all 4 had gone to India for a funeral. Why are people travelling at the moment. Quarantine has been required for months for all international arrivals.
The people are spreading it.
The government should just completely lock down the country for 6 months. Only the emergency services and hospitals working. The army can drop off bags of food in tins once a week. |

Would go with 'we' have allowed such to be the case, we want shorter waiting times for hospitals, we want faster and more efficient transport etc etc but we don't seem to want to accept that such things cost..
So we fall for the nonsense that is a low taxation party..
On the point of people coming back from India, it was being widely reported some were coming via Turkey and other places to avoid isolation given the red status and whilst it's not easy it's surely not beyond a Government to instruct special attention and to quarantine at the tax payers expense if that's why some were taking that route.. |

I wonder how many have actually quarantined that is the issue. If it was an amber country they probably went home and done what they usual do. It does raise big questions |

Not in Bolton - Govt declined targeted vaccination. |

Surely the people not isolating bear the responsibility... At some point people have to take responsibility for their actions. Or.... Shut the fucking borders to India....and any connections from there..... To say this was predicted doesn't give anyone any pleasure but if they can't be trusted then stoo the travel completely. |

Your always going to have people that don’t stick to it or care about any responsibility.
IMO travel from everywhere should have been banned EXCEPT in extreme or extenuating circumstances.
But we all know that lol! Pointless convo now x |

Absolutely agree. As soon as India started going tits up ALL travel to and from should have been banned.
It wasn’t!
Ask why?
1. Boris’ trade deal promo tour to India that then got cancelled with a week before rules changed.
2. Those rules took a week to come into effect because... wealthy Indians needed time to sort their affairs and get out of India... wealthy Indians = Tory party donors (or familial connections).
Basically another example of how inept, corrupt and morally bankrupt this current UK Govt is!

I don't dispute that as I don't know and I suspect you don't either. But what is available to all of us. Regardless of policy.. Is personal responsibility. So if its the rich tory party donors returning, not isolating to spread Indian variant covid in Bolton and Blackburn then yes let's call it out. Are the facts prejudiced? Or are they just facts? The outbreak is in an area and as quoted by Andy Burnham due initially to overseas travel. |

And they not having reg tests
Exactly this. How long until the penny drops with them??.
So it's only members of the Asian community testing positive then. I haven't seen that break down in the news. Just by age group.
The demographic is quite clear and the areas that the "spike" is happening I ..... just saying
your prejudice is showing ... just saying
Are the facts prejudiced? Or are they just facts? The outbreak is in an area and as quoted by Andy Burnham due initially to overseas travel. "

To be fair , the one I saw he said it could be which as it wasn't against any rules at the time then we shouldn't really blame people for it... but he believes it also could be that people can't afford to stay off work so spread it that way.
I find blaming certain people only causes division, wherever it came from originally , it is spreading as fast as the Kent variant and is worrying as we are about to open up more. |

It seems Bolton is predominantly white, so is Erewash and Sefton and they have a problem in those areas too
Covid spreads fast, whatever colour you are. However if it is spreading in people who live in multi generation families ( which I think is what you are getting at ), what do you think they should do? All move to separate houses until the covid is gone? |

I half think would be useful if they had more detailed data that they could release to show where it's spreading. If a large family lives in the same house it's likely they will all get infected.
The figures then show a 'tenfold' increase in infections but if they all isolate, perhaps that household would only be viewed as 1 infection. If that makes sense. And therefore only increasing the risk factor by 1 instead of 10.
Then the other half of me thinks no... bad idea... because then some people will think they aren't at risk because they don't live in that area/ situation. |
