"Why aren’t they all just Zooming in?"

The ridiculous thing is now, they ARE because they have to isolate at the hotel! The net effect of staying in India would have been no different, with regards to how the business meetings would be conducted now. The G7 thing should be 100% online, absolutely no need for delegations to trek across the world.

Yes, but the whole thing is just an excuse for a jolly holly paid for by the tax payers of all the countries. Cost for the conference, bet there's no change from 10 million quid vs. do it on zoom for about 50p all in.

It's tragic but they would get better medical treatment here, compared to the average Indian citizens

It's the g7. Plenty of face to face meetings going on in business. Or even in your local supermarket or 711. Don't think it's too much to expect the leaders of the 7 biggest economies to meet face to face to discuss putting the worlds economy back on its feet.

Of course the fact they show up infected might question some of their decision making!

But in a pandemic, it's simply not necessary. Yesterday I had a Teams meeting. I was sat in our teaching centre in Manchester. Three colleagues joined from other areas of Manchester and one from Liverpool. It was hosted by a guy from the Exec Board in Brighton and attended by a guy from the Middle East office (based in the Middle East). The meeting was held perfectly successfully. Pre pandemic, all the Manchester and Liverpool people would normally be in the centre every day. The guy from Brighton would have come on the train at company expense and probably the Middle East guy would have flown in for a short trip, flight, hotel etc all paid by the company. But there's no need really. For an hour's meeting, Teams* was fine. It's fine for the G7 too!

*Other video conferencing tools are available.

It's mad that it's taken a global pandemic for some businesses and organisations to grasp this..

Better for their staff in not having to spend time travelling, more cost effective, environmental etc..

Absolutely... If we can fly football teams in to play football matches and if we can fly ipl cricketers back from India safely... If we can fly 10k people in a day into Heathrow (check out the gov website for air travel and the professions that are allowed to travel) ... I don't think its unreasonable that our world leaders can get together. Or... Of we think this is unreasonable then we have to be consistent and cancel all international sports and travel for business.

Maybe now...assuming the Indian delegation are part of their government....they might start to take things seriously and actually lock down? Other than Delhi they don't seem to have done so.....
