Now a new study supports the theory that vitamin D – as well as some other vitamins and probiotics – could help reduce a person’s risk of Covid-19.

The study, published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health, examined data from more than 445,000 people from the UK, United States and Sweden who contribute to the Zoe Covid-19 Symptom Study app.

Information on infections as well as dietary supplements were collated.

Among the 372,000 UK participants, researchers found that women taking probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, multivitamins or vitamin D had a lower risk of being infected with the virus that causes Covid-19 – with the effects ranging from 9% to 14% lower risk among those who took supplements.

No effect was observed for those taking vitamin C, zinc or garlic supplements.

The observation was not seen in men.

Similar findings were also seen in the groups from the US and Sweden.

You will hear more about this today from .gov

Are they saying how much Vitamin D a person should be taking, and for how long?

My GP said everyone in the UK has low Vitamin D levels as we don't get much sun.

I've had 4 courses of Vitamin D in the last 6 years and on one now.

As my Mme' used to say:

'October to April go out and play'.

I think the standard dose set by the manufacturer would suffice - but daily is better than weekly.

I heard something about Finland's Covid toll being lower due to vitamin D. Can't remember off the top of my head.

In the states, they fortify milk with vitamin D. Considering that most people don't take in enough it may be a good idea to do here.

I recall a study in the USA observing that some 70% of people admitted to hospital (for any cause) had Vit D deficiency.

I think vitamin D deficiency is very common - I know it's common in Australia too, unless you work outside.

The study showed no effect on men if they take it. Sadly. I would still tell men to take it however.

I've had it on prescription for a few years now, as I was severely deficient. I would advise everyone to take a supplement, as the side effects of deficiency are so far reaching.

Yes I wear sunblock n fake tan due to a skin cancer scare, means we block much natural vitamin d, a loading dose of 20,000 for two weeks and regular daily vitamins as lack of folic acid not good, it can make u feel really shitty..... Here we are all down, depressed and glum, much of this is vitamin related too

the thing is correlation is not causation

have they checked the rest of the lifestyle profile of the study subjects? are the women at home and the men out at work for example?

i’m a women who doesn’t take vitamin d and hasn’t had covid but i never leave the house , my dad goes out to work and had it - chances are for us its nothing at all to do with gender or vitamins and everything yo do with number of interactions with other increasing probability

I'm not sure the details of this in particular, but I do believe the evidence is building in general. It's a low risk low cost intervention with other benefits

i know there is evidence of vitamin d in general being a positive , i was more meaning this study drawing differences between how it works for women but not men

I rarely wear suncream at work (except on my face), there isn't enough time to put it on. I'm usually in full sun part of the time I'm outside.

My GP said even if i was naked outside throughout the summer my body still wouldn't create enough vit D lol.

Eating your daily 5 a day whether this be fruit vegetables meat nuts seeds fish combined provides all the body needs and if it's over 5 even better people could or should understand what they are eating or not so they can balance all the natural vitamins needed to have a strong immune system this also helps organs repair if needed given amount we use that damages and taking up exercise so the body is able to filter through and it gets used...

A medical article I read said to take vitamin D3 - 50ug (2000iu) per day every day. I use an orange flavoured spray from BS and used to take 1 spray a day as on the box but take 2 now to fit that guidance.

I know a few medical people who all advise to have way above RDA’s, as they are super conservative and risk averse. I take 1000mg VitC and Zinc tab every day which is 1250% and 150% RDA respectively. I read a lot of anecdotal research and believe in this, and there’s no incentives to fund proper clinical trials.

On Vit-D my understanding is oral Vit-D doesn’t really work as you still need sun too to activate it. I don’t fully understand it but have always followed medical advice if those who do and get a minute or two of sun first or last thing on my skin. I never get ill so it must be working

Well duh having the right levels of all vitamins & minerals, a balance diet and active lifestyle....which is erm healthy is obviously gonnareduce your chances of getting seriously ill of anything & in particular viruses and bacteria as your immune system is working properly.

Key note : one body, one life, you need to keep it healthy as possible, no excuses.

Not all essential nutrients are in the 5 a day that you have, as hugely important as they are. Vitamin D is 1 of them, with our diets typically providing insufficient amounts. Choline is another. We typically create our own Vitamin D via skin sun exposure but this is difficult for many people, due to lifestyles. Away from the equator it also becames almost impossible to get sufficient exposure in the winter, to prevent deficiency.

Unless your chomping down a lot of spinach and kale, I doubt you are getting close to enough vitamin D from veg. I know of no fruits that contain it either.

many foods are fortified with vit d such as eggs and most cereals now.

i.e. they are put under UV light to induce it. Sunbed users also get exposure, SAD lights help some and getting outside & moving as much as possible with moisturised skin to prevent burning (allergic to suncream ironically & skin burns because it dehydrated and the burn is what kicks off cancers, keep it moisturised, just a standard one does)

the vit D you can get in tabs isn't the same as the vit D from the sun, vit d3 is what gets prescribed and overdosing on vit D is possible with tabs and leads to calcifications in the heart so get a blood test to check to check your levels before piling in loads thinking your doing good for yourself. I adjust when to take my prescribed vit d, by weather patterns and mood patterns, these are good to learn.

excess harms regardless of means or intent.

Most people in the UK are VitD deficient.

I take 5000iu daily, with 500K2 and 500 magnesium (different types)

You MUST take the co factors with high doses.

Soft gels are usually best.

I am using Vitamin D3 10000 IU as I am having to take a medication Amiodarone Hydrochloride.

The use of this medication means that I have to protect my skin from sunlight at all times, and even cover up on bright cloudy days.

Hence no Vitamin D from natural sources.
