Does vaccine prevent catching

It seems to be an accepted fact by some on here that the vaccine cannot prevent you catching or spreading the virus. I’m not a virologist, but I cannot find anything online that actually states this. As far as I can gather, there is no evidence either way, presumably because it’s all quite new. Now, ‘no evidence that it prevents spread’ is quite different to ‘it does not prevent spread’
I know there are a few on here who are actually experts, can anyone enlighten me out here? |

The impact of the vaccines on transmission of the virus is still under investigation. The initial studies focused, quite rightly, on the impact on disease severity and hospitalisation.
There's some information on the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control under the article titled "ECDC report examines SARS-CoV-2 transmission risk from vaccinated/previously infected individuals" dated 29 Mar 2021. |

"No it doesnt stop you catching it yet were being forced to have it!"
I would say that's not entirely correct as far as justification for having/not having. The science created something that helps stimulate antibodies to fight future attacks of the virus.. It's not a cure for now. The idea is our immune system will become stronger through having it and over time our bodies will have generated enough fighting capacity to give any more things like it a run for their money.. That's it I'd simple terms.. It's not an instant cure for anything.. Also it is likely that we will need boosters of the vaccine each year as the virus changes and mutates.. Just like with the flu jab.. So you aren't being forced.. You are maybe being advised to have it? and made aware of what might happen if you don't have it..
All perfectly reasonable in my book

I’m not an expert. But reports from Spanish care homes are 100% saying it’s stopping transmission. As i Said no expert but the health ministers are saying the same thing here. |

Probably just need to Google (other search engines available) or look at nhs website under vaccine...its all over the news and had been for months. |

Yes it has, and there is insufficient evidence to say either way.
Thanks Kinky couple, I read that report, and it looks as though there may be an effect on transmission |

Why don't people look at it each winter the flu shot is offered to the vulnerable as flu can also kill but also be transmitted to another which is also based on health conditions to boost immune and those who have a weak immune system who are unable to build up a strong enough immune system bodies change and either get weaker or stronger and either able to build up a defence of a unrecognised virus just the same as how the body and organs are able to repair themselves but at times need a little push in the right direction |

Ahh. The voice of reason! Don't you just love the ignorance of the self appointed who assert things which when actually analyzed are complete rubbish? Reminds me of the middle ages when the authorities stated with complete certainty that the earth was the centre of the universe and everything revolved around it! And woe betide you if you had the timerity to argue? |

Have you had your childhood vaccines? If so, they are exactly the same, they teach your body how to fight it, not wrap you in a hazmat suit. Do some reading on how vaccines actually work instead of reading headlines and panicking. |

That's unfortunate, but one vaccine does not provide full coverage. I'd expect her illness was much milder than of she had not been vaccinated. |

a substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases, prepared from the causative agent of a disease, its products, or a synthetic substitute, treated to act as an antigen without inducing the disease.

What sort of protection does COVID-19 vaccination give me?
So far, we know that the three currently approved COVID-19 vaccinations in the UK (BioNTech/Pfizer, Moderna, Oxford-AstraZeneca) prevent people getting sick with COVID-19. We don’t yet know if any of these vaccines stop people becoming infected with SARS-CoV-2 and whether they prevent you from spreading the virus. We know that the vaccines reduce your chance of getting ill with COVID-19 but we don’t know if you can still be carrying the virus, even if you don’t have any symptoms and feel well. This could mean that vaccinated people still spread the virus unknowingly
Information is out there. All you have to do is look for it.
P.S. its not even Facebook! Shocking, I know! |

The Covid vaccines stimulate immunity. They cause the body to produce B and T cells against the spike protein antigen on the SARS-CoV-2 virus. I think you have fundamentally misunderstood. My background is in microbiology (including the study of immunology) so I know what I'm talking about.
A good number of vaccines in common use prevent serious illness but not necessarily transmission. The inactivated polio virus vaccine and whooping cough vaccine being examples. |

The vaccines have strong evidence that they prevent serious illness and death from the virus, which have been our key goals, as they support greater health, lighten the NHS load etc. They appear to show potential reductions in the levels of infectivity and other benefits but we still await greater evidence for these benefits and we're not fully certain how all of the benefits are obtained. They appear to stimulate antibodies and T cells, both of which will combat the virus, in different ways.
It's reasonable to assume that there may be some people with a strong immune response whose immune response will destroy the virus without the victim experiencing symptoms of illness. Whether they will have had a short period of being infectious to others, is unclear. Any differences will have to be statistically significant and studies suitably powered.
We shouldn't take best guesses as evidence though. It's wise to assume that you will have a significantly greater potential not to become seriously ill or die, if vaccinated. |

As far as I'm aware it was never touted as making a person immune to catching CV19.
It has always be said that it lessens a person's chances of catching it and passing it on and if you do become infected you symptoms won't be as severe, so hopefully less likely to need hospitalisation. |

That old chestnut again . Each vaccine is going through its own separate approvals process in each country that it's licensed for. Obviously evidence has to be submitted for any initial application to be considered and the granting authority may stipulate conditions, with an initial approval. |

So what's the polio vaccine and the whooping cough vaccine then?! Jeez. The vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 stimulate B and T cell responses in the overwhelming majority of people injected with them. That is immunity, having the immune cells specific to that viral antigen present in your body. These vaccines are vaccines just as any other. The AZ one uses an established viral vector model. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna use an mRNA technique that has been proven experimentally since the late 1980s. |

Ah, the "if you squint at various US laws you can define all of these out of being vaccines, so they're not vaccines so we should be scared" line.
... Ok. Why are you basing your view on UK approved medicines on a US dependent conspiracy theory? |

We don't have any concrete evidence to say either way but early studies do suggest that the vaccine not only limits severity of illness but lowers transmission and makes it harder to catch covid.
But it's all early days so far
But every vaccinated person is one less person to worry about.. I've had both now |

It's all percentages. The idea is to reduce the percentage of opportunities to catch it or increase the percentages of avoiding it. Its not 100% guaranteed. There are plenty of other variables like amount of people you mix with. The more you mix the higher the probability that you will meet someone with it who may pass it on. |

A vaccine works by "teaching" your immune system how to deal with a virus. Vaccines (any of them) do not stop you from catching a virus, but because your immune system knows how to deal with it, it is dispatched quickly... with much reduced "illness".

According to the BMJ, this was just because it was an emergency and they didn't want to wait for the EU regulatory bodies (relevant at that time). |

Yes they gave it temporary authorisation before the EU.
But the EU has also only given it a temporary authorisation until 2023 and completion of trails.

That old chestnut again . Each vaccine is going through its own separate approvals process in each country that it's licensed for. Obviously evidence has to be submitted for any initial application to be considered and the granting authority may stipulate conditions, with an initial approval.
It's been approved in the UK. It's a shame the facts don't suit the story being spun
A quick look on dot gov will disprove that.
It has only been given a temporary authorisation
Quote from the Phizer authorisation
"This temporary Authorisation under Regulation 174 permits the supply of identified COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2 batches, based on the safety, quality and efficacy data submitted by Pfizer/BioNTech to MHRA in the period from 1 October to 2 December 2020"
So it's authorised then? "
Yup, and the temporary authorisation may be because of wanting to go faster than the EU.
Facts, eh? |

According to the BMJ, this was just because it was an emergency and they didn't want to wait for the EU regulatory bodies (relevant at that time).
Yes they gave it temporary authorisation before the EU.
But the EU has also only given it a temporary authorisation until 2023 and completion of trails.
"
Yep, it's authorised. The reason they give emergency authorisation is so that it can be quickly distributed and avoid all the red tape. It still has to pass the relevant safety checks etc.
People with far more knowledge than you have deemed it safe, I'm going to listen to them. |

"No it doesnt stop you catching it yet were being forced to have it!
Ahh. The voice of reason! Don't you just love the ignorance of the self appointed who assert things which when actually analyzed are complete rubbish? Reminds me of the middle ages when the authorities stated with complete certainty that the earth was the centre of the universe and everything revolved around it! And woe betide you if you had the timerity to argue?"
Some of us have studied at least a couple of modules at degree level in microbiology... that trumps those who’s knowledge of vaccination come only from YouTube and facebook... |

Or... People do still catch it post vaccine. The vaccine does not work for everyone. Or it doesn't stop infection but attenuates it and makes shedding shorter and less... So less significant symptoms... With over 32m people vaccinated... And such high community rates still I'd expect people who have been vaccinated to be infected.. Its not a surprise. |

What a silly statement.
Firstly there isn't an "IT", there are now 5 different vaccines available in the uk and 13 in use world wide.
Secondly, of course they are vaccines... even if you believe that they are still "unproven" or "experimental", they are still vaccines and have already proven to save lives.

If the vaccine he received is 99% effective your mate is the 1% but for each person like your mate 99 others have gained full protection from it |

And you are clearly never going to advance far in life then..
Some news..
Everything starts off as an experiment.. Without experimenting we would not have advanced one bit in the world..
The only difference this time is if we don't take part I it to find out.. This virus will win and all of its other strains too.
Also remember you are perfectly allowed to reject being part of the experiment.. HOWEVER there is no way whatsoever that you can then expect to enjoy what happens next for the rest of us as far as our freedom to mix, travel, work and socialise is concerned .. Assuming it's a success that is.. If its not we are all all fucked frankly!
But let's just say for argument sake it is..
And they won't let you travel, do certain jobs, go to pubs. Etc etc
What then?

Freedom to social travel and work should be a human right and not taken away because you want a vaccine, there should be restrictions imposed who want no part. That should be illegal. |

Which are more important, the rights of the unvaccinated by choice, or the rights of those who cannot be vaccinated or are not protected by a vaccine? |

It won't stop intial infection. What it does though is prevent the virus from proliferating in the body nearly as much as you're immune system will recognise it. This means a lower chance you'll be able to spread it and a much lower chance you'll get Ill. |

Only time will tell though what's going to happen. The virus has mutated a lot at this point and some strains are much more resistant than others. It'll likely become a seasonal infection such as the flu, jumping between hemispheres and mutating |

I rarely watch TV, never read newspapers & only listen to radio first thing in the morning while having breakfast. Yet even I know it was never said it would stop you getting it!
From day one it was said all it would do is hopefully stop you getting very ill with it & fingers crossed keep you out of hospital & in that it appears to be working just fine.
IF it also cuts down transmissions too, well then that’s just an added bonus that maybe wasn’t expected.

The ceo of moderna says it does alter your DNA.
Can't believe so many people are so keen to have an untested vaccine shoved in their body's.
Not talking about microchips etc. Talking about the unknown.
Now they want to mix two kinds together .
Also, let's not forget the original trials were on 18 to 50 year old with no underlying health issues. And out of I think it was 45000 people. Only half were vaxxed. The rest were placebo.
So 22500 healthy people to gather data from. What an absolute joke. |

The moderna comment is totally false, yet another person that doesn't bother looking for facts, just copies what they see on facebook.
Also, regarding the trials, people volunteered to be in those trials and they are the only people involved in the trials.
Given the benefits that the vaccine provides, I'd think people would stop looking for things to bitch about, but I guess that's too much to ask. |

Another, can't have a discussion without having a dig. No I'm not on Facebook actually. Yes he did say that. Go look for yourself. If you want to stick an experimental vaccine in your body to save yourself from a virus thats killed less than 0.1 percent of the global population. Most of whom had underlying conditions and many who simply tested positive within 28 days of death.(regardless of real cause) go right ahead.
I'll wait until next year thanks |

What a lovely human being you are.
Why not just have your vaccine and stop concerning yourself with those that don't want to experimented on. After all. You've had the vax so your safe aren't you? it's amazing what fear can do to people. I suppose I'll be a lower form of human if I don't. Welcome to the vaccine apartheid so very very very sad.
Have a look into the auto immune response that ALL the animals they tested on died from after being exposed to the virus "in the wild"
I hope you are ok in thing term.

You're spreading falsehoods, trying to convince people not to have the vaccine, why not just not have the vaccine and stop concerning yourself with people who do want it? You're lying to people and getting defensive when called out on it, and yes, I do think you're a lower form of human if you spout bullshit about something you have no idea about then try to pass it off as fact. |

No vaccine stops you catching a virus.
Even if you have the flu jab you can still get mild symptoms as it takes a while for your body to produce the antibodies to kill be virus and stop it multiplying.
At the end it's a statistics game. It reduces infection rates and slows down multiplication rates, thus reducing chance of mutation and transmission.
Once you have enough people who are vacinated the probability of the virus surviving is practically zero, hence no more polio and small pocks.
It's people stop taking vaccines the probability of infection increases and because of the exponential multiplication rates of viruses they can suddenly spread like wildfire. |

There's absolutely zero evidence that antibody dependent enhancement occurs with Covid-19 vaccines. It was theoretical but has not been observed:
Medpage Today: "Why ADE Hasn't Been a Problem With COVID Vaccines"
Sciencemag.org: "Antibody-Dependent Enhancement and the Coronavirus Vaccines"
A quote from the second one:
The Bottom Line
So here’s the short version: no sign of ADE during the preclinical animal studies. No sign during the human clinical trials. No sign during the initial vaccine rollouts into the population. And (so far) no sign of ADE even with the variant strains in different parts of the world. We have things to worry about in this pandemic, but as far as I can tell today, antibody-dependent enhancement does not seem to be one of them. I understand why people would worry about it, and want to avoid it. But if you’re coming across reports that say that it’s a real problem right now and that you should avoid getting vaccinated because of it, well, I just don’t see it. Some of that is well-intentioned caution, and some of it is probably flat-out anti-vaccine scaremongering. |

You can catch it but been vaccinated means your immune system can recognise the virus and kill it if it enters your system.
You can still pass it on and if any mutation it can take more time for your body to fight the virus |

From Pub med.
Results of the study: COVID-19 vaccines designed to elicit neutralising antibodies may sensitise vaccine recipients to more severe disease than if they were not vaccinated. Vaccines for SARS, MERS and RSV have never been approved, and the data generated in the development and testing of these vaccines suggest a serious mechanistic concern: that vaccines designed empirically using the traditional approach (consisting of the unmodified or minimally modified coronavirus viral spike to elicit neutralising antibodies), be they composed of protein, viral vector, DNA or RNA and irrespective of delivery method, may worsen COVID-19 disease via antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE). This risk is sufficiently obscured in clinical trial protocols and consent forms for ongoing COVID-19 vaccine trials that adequate patient comprehension of this risk is unlikely to occur, obviating truly informed consent by subjects in these trials.
Conclusions drawn from the study and clinical implications: The specific and significant COVID-19 risk of ADE should have been and should be prominently and independently disclosed to research subjects currently in vaccine trials, as well as those being recruited for the trials and future patients after vaccine approval, in order to meet the medical ethics standard of patient comprehension for informed consent.

This is actually hilarious, it's about patient comprehension. You should take note of the word may, they haven't provided evidence, just said it might happen. You seem to have issues with comprehension.
What's your point? |

What's your point?"
My point is there is clearly an issue with potential ADE that isn't being disclosed to people.
I'm not quite sure why you're so aggressive in your reply.
You seem to think I'm anti vax. I'm not. ( Not that it should concern anyone, unless your names karen).
I'm sharing my thoughts out of care for fellow human beings.
Weather I'm proved right or wrong is irrelevant.
No hiding from these FACTS.
1. No long term studies exist for these vaccines.
2. NOBODY knows what effect they may have long term. ( hence the freedom from liability that the pharma companies have)
3. If you think for 1 second that big pharma will tell you the truth. You're wrong! (See phizer lawsuits for a start) see the history of oxycodeine and what it's done to thousands of lives.
4. The phizer trials do not end till 2023 which means yes, they are experimenting on people.
All this and more for something that's killed, or been involved in someway for 3 million deaths out of a global population of over 6 billion.
Even the times has recently stated that over a quarter of uk covid deaths, weren't covid related.
You do the maths.
I'm pointing out things I've heard.
I'm always open to being corrected when wrong.
I will have the vaccine when I know its safe and fully outweighs the mortality rate of covid.
As for ebola, dengue fever etc.
Very high mortality rate so why no vaccines?
End of the day it's too early to say.
Until the second doses have been rolled out and we've gone through another flu season/3rd wave. I'll pass.
Being concerned about a vaccine with so little data gathered over a long period of time, is NOT anti vax. Merely being cautious.
If anyone thinks that's ridiculous should be ashamed of themselves.
You can believe what msm and social media tell you. That's fine.
When you realise that both of those are funded by big tech and big pharma. You have a right to listen to all sides of the argument.
Never mind fact checkers. They aren't necessarily being unbiased. Especially when they also receive funding from the aforementioned.
I actually hope I'm completely wrong in my fears.
Banning/discrediting time served, highly qualified professors from the big platforms only serves to fuel the suspicion.
With professor sucharit bhakdi for example. The man has taught all over. He's won awards. He raises concerns and all of a sudden he's not to be trusted.
COMMON SENSE would tell you somethings not quite right.
Good luck with your vaccines. I hope you have success with it.

The "long term studies" element is a bit of a grey area. Obviously there are many different vaccines (20ish), but they are all based on pre-existing technologies so there is a huge amount of long-term data on the bulk of each vaccine.
The "Freedom from litigation" was realistically part of government "begging" the manufacturers to release their vaccines before they wanted to. |

And the litigation thing applies to most or all vaccines in the UK and this kind of action has been taken for decades |

Can you point me to where it says you're covered by state liability please.
Also, seeing as they are only just asking for blood clots to be added to the list of adverse reactions.
How on earth can they add complications to a list if they are still discovering them? The vaccines haven't been going long enough to know. Average data gathering for flu vaccines take around 10 years to correlate.
With all due respect. Unless you have a crystal ball, there's absolutely no way to say at this moment.
The list of side effects are simply generic for all vaccines. |

Oo cool. I get £120,000 pounds as long as I'm over 60 percent disabled by the vaccine.
I asked for the link to where it says the pharmaceutical companies are liable.
There isn't one though is there.

It's the same system that applies to every vaccine. If you don't like it, take it up with your MP, it's a political decision.
Because these companies say so - umm. No. That's not how any of this works. Look it up if you like, clinical trials happened, they passed, and they were scrutinised by various governments and approved. |

Herd immunity is not concerned with vaccination or viral infections, any/every source of immunity contributes to the immunity of the herd.
I think there also needs to be lines drawn between the scientists who developed the vaccines and the "pharma" indindustries that are manufacture the products. The vast majority of scientists are only concerned with the truth and the science, and there are plenty of others who are always going to "check" the science to ensure that it is correct and accurate... there's no getting away with telling porkies.

It prevents hospitalisation in most cases. So it's going to bring down the severity of an infection. It will save lives and help the NHS get back on their feet. Nobody is 'forced' to have it, but if it keeps me out of the ITU then role on next week for me!!! |

You say you're happy to be proved wrong, yet you spent half of this thread defending a lie told by the mainstream media, when you finally admitted you were wrong you found something else to bitch about. For a 'not an antivaxxer' you're sure acting like one.
How about we all agree that you've been proved wrong at least once so we will take your 'evidence' as what it is, crap you found online that supported your agenda so you ran with it, with no intention of checking if it's true or not.
As far as I'm concerned, anything you say is a twisted version of the truth, if you were that concerned about the safety of the vaccine, you wouldn't have let your children have it. |

"Lol you are funny.
Would you like to see the evidence?
It's right here waiting for you. Unfortunately I can't upload it here.
Given your concern about ADE which is unfounded and based on now out of date material, your lack of understanding of clinical trials or approvals, and more besides, I suspect that you're not entirely clear what "evidence" means and the bar required.
Thanks for your opinion.
I'm done talking to you about this. We'll agree that I'm right and you're wrong then leave it at that.
Stay safe. Stay well. All the best.
You’re wrong #justsaying"

Ahh bless you all.
My funniest moment was seeing the comment "you believe everything msm tells you"
Errmmm
Enjoy your little clique.
I'm far too normal to waste anymore energy on most of you.
Maybe try living your life via your own opinion rather than the one you've been convinced is actually your own.
The level of immaturity is absolutely mind boggling.
Frightened of ypur own shadows for goodness sake. Enjoy your vaccines.
I'll stick to the actual statistics to make my mind up and my very own immune system to deal with this one thanks. If my immune system doesn't cope. THAT'S LIFE. You're not escaping the grim reaper no matter how hard you try.
Hopefully before that time comes I'll spend my days in relative health rather than take a chance at spending my days nursing a potential long term disability over something I'm simply not scared of. You know the saying.
Rocky 4. "If he dies, he dies".
Feel free to talk amongst yourselves. Maybe even spend some time ridiculing an alternative opinion if that makes you feel so worthy.
I'm out.
Bye |

Ah, the good old 'crap, I've been handed my arse on a shiny platter so now I'll pretend I'm better than everyone and attempt to make a graceful exit' strategy.
About as graceful as a hippo doing the river dance. |
