Don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet but multiple news outlets have reported today that real-time modelling indicates we will hit the level of exposure needed to ensure herd immunity on Monday (approx. 73%).
Obviously not pinning all my hopes on a few articles but seems like there might be a light at the end of the tunnel |

I've not seen the published research evidence supporting this claim. There has been uncertainty over the threshold for reaching herd immunity, due to the factors that drive each infection being different to others. Measles will show a different requirement for vaccination levels, to covid, for example. The level of infectivity are key - different variants that are more infectious, could increase the minimum proportion of people needed to be vaccinated, before herd immunity is achieved, for example. |

At last! A little common sense being shown on a thread without the panic mongers or anti vaccers wading in (so far?) It would be great if we have turned a corner so we can get back to some sort of normality but I'll still be being cautious. |

If all the vaccines were equally distributed amongst the country then maybe yes however
1. Vaccine distribution varies greatly around the UK. It’s 90% in some areas and a lot lower in others- the 73% is an average.
2. I am fairly sure the B117 strain has pushed the number needed a bit higher and we actually still do not know how the 12 week gap with effect the efficacy of the Pfizer vaccine.
Bottom line - it’s still too early to say regarding herd immunity but definitely jab as many people as possible with vaccine |

Herd immunity would be great, but we need every country to effectively vaccinate their population in order for people to regain their freedom as we know it. |

Yes, if true, herd immunity relies on even distribution at a sufficient level. |

do we really have an average 73% of population vaccinated? we definitely don’t have 73% with 2 vaccines
i know we will have people who have had the virus and antibodies that way but was there an exercise to track the overlap between those and the people vaccinated because the 2 totals can’t just be added together
can’t wait for when we have genuine herd immunity but with pubs just about to open this strikes me as premature, irresponsible journalism which will just encourage people to scrap any measures left in place because “we are now all immune” |

"Soon as it was announced, Hancock denied it, well he would wouldn't he? It doesn't fit their agenda."
Yes of course, herd immunity goes against Hancock's government agenda and his loyal fab worshippers, the usual suspects on here. |

Obviously not pinning all my hopes on a few articles but seems like there might be a light at the end of the tunnel " this was actually stated by UCL on their modelling and has now been disputed by both the government and sage. As per usual the media hear something then distort things then out comes all the rubbish.the government has never followed, any data from UCL. So until sage come up with similar data this just won't happen. Not yet anyway. Its another case of trying to jump the gun |

60 ish percent vaccinated with first jab (gives majority of antibody protection) plus a fair number with antibodies from contracting it previously. |

"Chile has got a vaccination programme on a par with ours, yet they've had to go back into lockdown due to rising infection rates.... "
Different vaccine. Apparently the Chinese vaccine that chile is using really really needs the second jab. 2 weeks after receiving the second jab efficacy is 56% but that drops to 3% after only the first. 38% have received 1 jab 23% have received both jabs.
So at best 23% of Chile’s population have 56% protection.
