Italians have been "storing" 29 mil doses of AZ vaccine due to be shipped to UK.

The EU countries can't even rollout the AZ vaccines they have now, why hold back?

This was a production company that was producing them, rather than 1 government in the EU. Companies such as the vaccine manufacturers are under contract to different bodies and are entitled to do things according to their contracts.

I don't see the point OP. Are you critical of those who are involved, who, etc?

I think it was the company not the Italian government or the EU that was storing them...plus I think some were for shipment to Australia?

The EU have made a botch up with the vaccine roll out. Most EU states have large quantities of various vaccines because of all the scare mongering that's happened many are afraid now to have it..also youbhave to consider the UK has spent millions building and organising mass vaccination centres that the EU hasn't yet. So how can the EU hope to achieve the same level of vaccination that the UK or USA has ?

The batch for Australia was only 250k this is 29 million.

Maybe they had them in "store" till Thursday when the EU can say not to send?

It this was inevitable given the EU has been exporting vaccines outside the EU but other nations have not been exporting to the EU to the extent.

I don't agree with the every nation for itself approach but it looks like it may be heading that way.

Fucking love this paragraph. For all those bemoaning our supposed lack of freedoms...

"The Italian government said the health squad of the military police had gone to "verify" batches at a plant in Anagni, near Rome, last weekend after a request by the European Commission."

The health squad....! I can see it now... Full nbc suits.. Swat gun team at the ready... How dare you smuggle health giving vaccines to people who need and can make use of them!?

The other is not granting a licence for vaccine production facilities in developing countries.

As per usual the enraged people didn't actually bother reading the article. Here, let me help you.

"La Stampa newspaper reported that the UK was a possible destination for some of the doses but a UK government official said it was not expecting such a delivery.

The Italian government said "the batches that were inspected were all aimed for Belgium". AstraZeneca said 16 million of the doses were "waiting for quality control release to be dispatched to Europe" while the other 13 million were to go to countries in the Covax vaccine-sharing scheme."

Brexiteers can't stop fighting the battle even though they won.

Well there decision today has just cost 226 Italians there jobs, my parent company is Swedish and has decided today to close down our production plant in Italy and relocate the jobs to the UK and Sweden, company directors words were " no jumped up politicians are going to screw my business just because they have made a balls up!", to clarify we do not manufacture the vaccine but the plant in Italy was producing medical equipment that is vitally important in other areas.

To be honest I think the party who has done most to drive a wedge between the EU and the UK is AZ it’s self, even going back from releasing its initial results

- claiming a half dose was more efficacious when it was due to the extended gap between doses

- not vaccinating enough people over 75 in the initial trial to see if it was efficacious

- twice not submitting the correct data to the FDA for licensing in America

- initially offering 100 million doses to the EU but cutting it to 30 M.

What Marcon said was very damaging and pausing last week because of the clot worry was also damaging but the way the company have not been particularly transparent is ultimately detrimental to the vaccine and will increase hesitancy. People in the EU are not necessarily just jealous of the UK they just do not trust AZ( the company) at all.

It such a shame because it is truly a wonderful vaccine - it’s just seems a bit mad for a company to act in the manner it has and expect that it was not going to affect its own image as seen by the world.

That's very sad for those losing their jobs. Unfortunately it seems that the main focus is dick measuring politicians (ursulas dick is very big) rather than doing what is right and what they were (in our case) voted to do or in EU case appointed to do. I don't think this bodes well for a constructive trading arrangement when the dust settles but lets hope we all see a bit of sense soon and minimise the politics for the sake of them.

Some great points and if true I'd agree. That's the trouble when you get the EU (or any other govt) meddling in Companies affairs. There early a lot of detail and nuance but from what I've seen there is hypocrisy on the one hand by demanding more... And yet on the other saying saying its not safe so we aren't using it. Don't get me wrong it must be done safely above all things. But that's what the ema did right? Twice I think? Now three times. It is a mess and is going to get worse and the sooner the politicians fuck off and leave it to those who actually do something the better. Its unedifying on all sides.... But equally we are offering to help them get the nl plant approved by the ema and to improve production levels in the other 2 facilities.... At the end of the day it all an internal az issue.

Now... We could ask the question why is moderna or pfizer not having the same spotlight shone on it when they have exactly the same issues re shorting delivery qtys.

"La Stampa newspaper reported that the UK was a possible destination for some of the doses but a UK government official said it was not expecting such a delivery.

It's not exactly flag waving if the EU is blocking many countries, it's bad form from the EU nothing else.

Not the same at all Lionel. One is raiding a companies production facility with govt troops to stop shipment of completed vaccines going to a companies customers.

The other is not granting a licence for vaccine production facilities in developing countries.

But do continue your crusade to be critical of our country for anything and everything.

******************************

Thanks for straightening out the thread.

I think the whole issue has been politicised.

The eu have certainly handled it badly but the usual right wing Brexit brigade used to to score political points, which was beyond contempt.

It should just get out to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible.

But too many people have used it to make political capital out of it.

The phrase.. we dont want it washing up on our shores was no accident.

"the usual right wing Brexit brigade"

Lets have some names and facts?"

Think I dont need to point out the multitude of we told you to so headlines

Obvs where I said the eu had handled the vaccine rollout badly was a bit too confusing for you to understand.

It's simple, the Italians have seen the UK vaccination success and wanted to join the winning side as usual. The 29 million doses would have helped, but they were rumbled.

I don't think we are stockpiling vaccines for the highest bidder. We are using whatever we can get our hands on.

And are blocking vaccine production in poorer countires."

How are we (the Uk ) blocking vaccines that we don't produce ?

This is the EU that is trying to save face because they didn't invest early enough or widely enough for an efficient rollout.

I don't think we are., I think point is about licensing other facilities to produce the patented medication safely. Which all are doing too slowly on the face of it but I'm sure there are many considerations to bringing on production facilities, which most of us won't know much of the detail about.

At the end of the day neither UK or EU are producing vaccines.

They are being produced by big multinational pharma companies who have commercial contracts to supply vaccines to various bodies...health authorities and governments etc.

I would thing blocking of exports by any country would be illegal under international trade laws.

BUT.... any court action to prevent such actions are likely to take several years...so in the end pointless.

EU bully boy commission will do what they always do.

Read the article and you make up your mind

"

I think it was a simple news article that potentially covered a number of points but wasn't potentially comprehensive.

Ultimately, the production companies are subject to contractual laws, with the EU, the UK and other customers.

The article was slim on full factual detail, as I stated earlier.

Production companies working for several supplu chains, don't just ship out whatever they have in stock willy nilly, when they are medicines subject to controls being an added restraint. It's potentially just more fluff in the media. Better to focus on government progress than this sort of thing

No but then it wouldn't have stirred things up quite as much v the EU if we created the story that those nasty EU types are denying gods own brits their vaccines. It used to be that "journalists" had to verify facts and editors cared about the accuracy of the stories they published, and were held accountable for them. That's another thread somewhere I'm sure.

I don't agree with the every nation for itself approach but it looks like it may be heading that way.

If the EU was in a position to use the vaccine i would agree but they're not so why not let others use what is ready now till they are ready? Then all the production can go to them"

Are EU countries not ready to use them? I'm pretty sure the position here is that as soon as vaccines come in they are sent out to be administered.

We have vaccination centres ready but no vaccines. If more came in they would be administered. I honestly don't see it as a case of not been ready for them.

Well... Here's an interesting take on it from the telegraph.

"

The UK and the European Union remain in talks over Europe’s threats to block vaccine exports to Britain. Our continental neighbours are growing increasingly jittery; only yesterday officials raided a vaccine plant in Italy convinced it was full of vaccines secretly destined for Britain. The reality was quite the opposite. Our reporters reconstruct the full story of how elite Italian police accidentally impounded their own vaccine supply in this excellent piece."

Don't understand... How is out govt distracting in this case? They've done nothing. The EU have raided a plant in Italy and commandeered vaccine that was destined for Italy. Has nothing at all to do with the UK govt.

You can... I think theres a lot of selective reporting of numbers. The EU don't make or send anything. They are a political organisation. The EU raided a plant in Italy assuning it contained az vaccines destined for the UK. They were az vaccines destined for Italy. There are going to be many months of squabbles over this as basically there is more demand than supply. UK needs to look after UK. EU needs to look after EU. Both need to honour contracts signed between respective govts and private companies.

I feel sorry for AZ.

A company chosen to work with Oxford to produce this amazing vaccine first (alongside Pfizer) but at cost price and available to all countries.

And yet the EU are questioning data...dissing its affective Ness and safety and acting like mafia bosses wanting to get vaccines ahead of other nations.

All this on a company trying to do its best for the entire planet.

I don't think you are missing anything other than the politics. We are following a "put your own mask on first before attempting to help others" policy... It would appear the EU are initially operating a "help others first ish" policy... Or are they? Perhaps until they have infrastructure ready to deliver in large quantities... Who knows. There's something very smelly about the whole thing with govts and EU getting involved in a private Companies running.

What we can do for the EU... Population 6 to 7 times ours is almost irrelevant. There are 3 other companies who are not delivering either.

It wasn't an argument. I was just attempting to explain how the situation may be arising and how the EU could be viewing it. I think the EU are looking at it saying there's a company based and regulated in the EU this is producing vaccinations with whom they have an agreement and they are trying to use their position to ensure that agreement gets priority.

Yes possibly or in this case, as they suspected they were destined for the UK... Making sure the UK does not get theirs before ours. As it turns out they were impounding vaccines in Italy, for Italy.
