I have just read on live science that the WHO have finally concluded that it started in bats held in animal farms that supplied the markets in Wuhan.

What pressure can be put onto China to stop these dangerous uncivilized practices?

There wasn't any bats sold in that particular marker

Carlson said his colleagues in China have been careful and precise in their work, publishing data according to international regulations that any scientist anywhere in the world can examine, and that strongly supports the conclusion that the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market wasn't the source of the virus. This is also from live science

Bats to animals to humans. Just adding the source to your post for context.

None. Zoonotic diseases that are capable of transfer from animal to humans have been known about for decades, and are part of multiple research programmes.

The principal problem is the increasing proximity of bats, which are mammals too, and humans.

Crucially, the Chinese do not respond to pressure from outside sources; if the problem starts to adversely affect their society or economy they may enact measures themselves, but coercion won't work.

Zoonosis is a problem throughout Asia; SARS and MERS were red flags for the current Covid-19 problem, that is bound to recur for decades to come.

Vaccination of bats, the source vector for Covid is being actively investigated in Singapore.

This is a planetary problem that requires global solutions enacted by WHO and the UN.

All animal agriculture should be banned, wether bats, cats or cows.

It has no place in the modern world and is a cause of many disease and pandemics.

Bats being the most vital to ban as they carry so many strains of virus that can potentially be passed onto other animals they dont normally come into contact with .

Read it ! It's the farm that provided animals to the market . So in SIMPLE terms for you :

The market itself would not necessarily have bats or the original source but it was probably passed onto animals that were SUPPLIED to the markets

That's irrelevant surely if the farm was supplying meat or animals to the Wuhan market and that farm also had bats?

Not sure about that... But we all have the power to choose where we buy our "stuff" from. The power and intelligence to make better informed choices. We are all empowered to make the right choice not always the cheapest or easiest choice... Who knows.

They had many other virus starting from such "farms" and I do feel they should be shamed in some way to discourage their horrible treatment of wild animals

The issue with lots of these threads that discuss what "others" should do... Is that we seem to be saying... "somebody else should do something" over which we have no control at all. Rather than saying... "I'm going to do something" over which we have complete control. If we are that disgusted by them. Then why do we insist on putting more money into their economy? Money talks louder than any other attribute.

All these programmes and game shows portraying wild eating kind of contradict the bat theory, yeh over breeding and farming animals isn't healthy but if it were as serious to Chinese people's health surely they would stop on there own accord or are they that desperate for regular food they resort to such measures?

Back in the 70's food hygiene was way worse and food habits the same why didn't the virus start then?

Hey it's a discussion.does she have a choice to make? There's lots to think about there...

A huge part of the response to the "China virus" (patent pending D Trump) has been with 'stuff' from China.

Im simply advocating that we get what we deserve. If we always make the easiest cheapest and uninformed choice.. We really can't complain at the consequences.

We empowered the beast because we wanted cheaper, faster "stuff". We and our parents all played a part in the destruction of our own "making stuff" ability because we always seek out the cheapest rather than supporting our own manufacturing base (and one can argue, why wouldn't you?). Well we can all hopefully see why not early enough now. We woke the beast. We fed the beast.

That's a very interesting thought. Which we will never be able to answer... But are (let's use the clumsy generalisation) bat eaters any more likely to be unhealthy than say... The chlorine cleaned, antibiotic and growth hormone injected, factory farmed protein animals that we eat? I don't know much about food chains but, people eat some pretty weird shit around the world and I don't think we will ever change that... Even if we should try. But I guess eating it hygienically isn't too much to ask..

Back in the day the chinessseee were more a farming community but over the last few decades they are more wealthy and some things which were traditionally low key and considered "delicacies " are now more wide spread.

We are seeing g it in various wildlife from Tigers to Rhino horns arc. The bat eating and farming of wild bats has also grown proportionally and have seen several viruses emerge over the past 20 years as a consequence

It's the eating that promotes the problem though. The way they are farmed and intermingled with other creatures that bats would not otherwise come into contact with .

Humans everywhere are a similar level of problem, through our incessant demand for new things, pushing ourselves to destroy much of what is natural for our perceived benefit. Growth at any cost is exploitation when we ignore the damage to the world and other life on it. As we become immersed by natural ecosystems that we have disrupted, we also face the consequences, which includes the transfer of pools of pathogens between species. Using other animals as our commodity, without respect is a reflection of this and occurs around the world. Don't point fingers, when you are part of the problem but work collaboratively, to eliminate your damage

I think you will find that figure is a bit disingenuous, a significant chunk of that 10-14% are not on a meat free diet through choice but due to living in extreme poverty.

The original post was about putting pressure on China to stop the "uncivilised" practice of eating bats. Hence my question about how the choice of meat can be class as uncivilised.

So the practice is uncivilised because it's uncivilised. Sounds lovely me circular reasoning to me. Come on, man, you are not ten.

I don't and won't eat bats, but we dig up filter feeders from the sea bed and make delicacies out of them.

So I said it was a quite a judgemental call.

We have a completely different culture to the chinese so there are bound to be things we find strange and vice versa.

Anyway wasnt the issue how they were stored?"

Yes. That's passing judgement and that's the easy part. The hard part is to say why it is uncivilised. Do you think you can manage that?

We teach children that the search for knowledge begins with the question why.

Surely saying an entire country is unccilivilsed is extremely judgemental?

Wild bats though naturally carry viruses though and I suppose yes if you never mixed them with other species you could I suppose carry on with your bat eating ways ?

"Carlson said his colleagues in China have been careful and precise in their work, publishing data according to international regulations that any scientist anywhere in the world can examine, and that strongly supports the conclusion that the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market wasn't the source of the virus. This is also from live science

Read it ! It's the farm that provided animals to the market . So in SIMPLE terms for you :

The market itself would not necessarily have bats or the original source but it was probably passed onto animals that were SUPPLIED to the markets "

the information whilst being simple I suggest is also very misleading and potentially incorrect though !it is not JUST bats .. the same as we have many times mesed up by decimating a species of animal because we ' thought' they carried some form of disease.. wise up

What filter feeders are capable of spreading such nasty viruses ?

I'll ignore the Jamaica give.

Have you ever came across anything that was common sense that turned out to be nonsense? Like getting a cold from being in the cold?

Anyway, I don't care whether people eat bat or not. I wanted the OP to explain why it made people uncivilised. I just didn't want anyone to conclude that he was engaging in casual racism.
